The Tragedy of Sotiria - Daughter of Poseidon and Medusa
The forbidden affairâthough, an affair implies consentâbetween Poseidon and Medusa in the sacred temple of Athena resulted in more than a curse for Medusa. While the beauty of Medusa was taken away as she was turned into a gorgon, she had also fallen pregnant by her encounter with the God of the Sea.
Sotiria was born a baby girl with her beauty intact. She was a demigod, no traces of the gorgon curse. A constant reminder for Medusa of the day her life changed forever, a punishment from the Glorious Athena. A reminder of injustice, loss, and suffering.
Medusa was unkind to her daughter, teaching her that she was unwanted and just as much of a curse as the snakes on her head. Sotiria grew to hate her mother as well as her father, who was the reason she had been burdened with life. Although Poseidon had claimed her, reached out to her, granted her gifts and power, Sotiria would not embrace him as her father.
Sotiria would grow to be known as the Sea Witch, lurking within the waters nearby to bring her comfort. Her father would speak to her in times of distress and sometimes sheâd even speak back. But other days sheâs turn to her mother for guidance and be met with her sharp tongue.
On one fateful day, Medusa found her daughter alone in the gardenâstarkly beautiful as she was all those days ago. A spitting image of pain and loss. In one moment of weakness, Medusa uncovered her eyes and looked her daughter in the eye for the first time and watched Medusaâs Curse take her, turning her to stone in a picturesque stature.
Years passed and the world changed, Sotiria stuck in place as a statue in her motherâs growing collection. Poseidon would silently grieve his daughter, but heâd lost children before. Nearly three millennia later, another child of Poseidon would walk straight into Medusaâs modern lair and their father would see this as a chance without intervention. Poseidon reached out to his son, Percy, to save Sotiria as he passed her statue standing in the center of a wishing fountain. Percy investigated while his quest partners pieced the stone puzzle pieces together. The daughter of Athena, Annabeth, was the first to speak her name.
âSotiria. Daughter of Medusa andâŠPoseidon. Your sister.â
Percyâs fingers dipped in the water and the connection caused the water to flow upward to the stone statue, slowly transforming it back to flesh from the bottom up. Once her face was free from its stone prison, she gasped and screamed in Ancient Greek dialect until Poseidon contacted her, granting her the knowledge she needed to communicate. Annabeth was apprehensive, for the Sea Witchâs tales were never consistent.
Sotiria was disoriented, thousands of years without consciousness found her harshly. Her brother did his best to ease her to the ground, her energy returning as her bare feet submerged in the pool of water that surrounded her at Aunty Emâs. Here she was met with a choiceâwalk into a world unknown to her, or join her brother on his quest with the daughter of the goddess that doomed her to this cursed life. Sotiria chose the quest, which led her back to her father.
Poseidon had been reunited with his daughter after all these years, but time didnât heal those wounds from long ago. Especially as no time had passed for Sotiria. Her rejection was expected, but still hurt the god who had yearned to see his child free from her stone prison. Annabeth was jealous Zeus had not done the same for Thaliaâs wooden one.
To be told off by his beloved daughter with the Council of Gods as audience was humiliating as this reunion was so anticipated, but it wasnât exactly unexpected.
But none of the Council intervened.
Percy returned to Camp Half-Blood with his sister, who had been called a monster as soon as she crossed the barrier. She was insistent she was not a gorgon, and it was proven as she passed the barrier, but the campers and staff were skeptic as her tale was always that of anger and woeâshe opposed the Gods. Percy insisted she was to be trusted, and she was as much a demigod as everyone else here.
Percy brought Sotiria home with him, and Sally welcomed her with open arms. Dubbed âSophiaâ in the modern world, she acclimated to the everyday. She hated the everyday. Sotiria would ponder her options of finding a family and having a mother who loved herâŠor being alone at Camp Half-Blood. Maybe the New World would have to acclimate to her.

Backstory: Jane Murphy, a GCPD recruit, was just another promising young woman working her way up the ranks. She excelled at her work, making honest arrests and always looking out for civilians. After being promoted to detective, she began to lose her faith in the justice system watching as more and more terrible people were acquitted of their crimes, some too heinous to speak of.
Jane realized how corrupt the system really was now that she wasnât so naĂŻve and willing to do everything by the book. Cops and judges and politicians all taking bribes from the Gotham underworld to continue breaking serious laws. It was disgusting to her.
With the resources available to her, criminal databases with addresses, aliases, known whereabouts, relatives, affiliations, modus operandi (mode of operating/M.O.), fingerprints and DNA, she got an idea.
First, she got the idea to take out low level street scum. People ruining lives who keep getting out to cause more harm. This didnât draw much attention, people like that arenât worth the time when they have so many enemies.
But she built her confidence, soon realizing that the only way to catch some attention was by going big. Big enough to cause a commotion. To make a real difference. These corrupt judges were first on her list, framing crime bosses as their killers. Two birds, one stone. Judge goes in the ground, bad guy in a cell for lifeâthe judicial system takes care of its ownâand she gets off scot-free. Not even so much as a strange look from her fellow officers, no one suspected a thing.
Now she was operating in Gotham the way she saw fit. Putting an end to the misery of the innocent by murdering the evil scum of this city. Too bad Batman was starting to catch on.

Backstory: Penny Gallagher, twin sister of Lip and about ten minutes younger, grew up on the South Side of Chicago with two addict parents and a half-dozen siblings. She worked her ass off to graduate two years early so that she could start helping her older sister, Fiona, out around the house. Her first job at 16 in a kitchenâwent from a porter to a line cook in three months. She and Fiona became the heads of household, the oldest sisters, and kept the kids in line as best as they could.
By nineteen, Penny was the sous chef of a restaurant and the main cook of the house, bringing any leftovers she could scrounge up home for the kids. Fiona was her best friend and still made sure her younger sister could have fun, dragging her to clubs and such until she fucked up her own shit. Penny persisted, getting unwanted help from her twin to keep the household running.
Sheâs dealt with quite a lot of bullshit, but thatâs just what Gallagherâs do. After all those years of playing mom with her sister, sheâd never be able to break that role. Even became a mom to a kitchen of dumbass kids (and some dumbass adults) at work, but sheâll shape them up.

Carmen rolled over onto her side when she heard the phone buzz.
BLOCKED CALLER
She stared at the screen for about ten seconds, contemplating if sheâd answer or not until one of her cats swatted at the phone. Carmen grabbed it and answered the call, hesitating to speak at all.
âCarmen? Are you there? Itâs Dick.â Her stomach dropped upon hearing his voice. âPlease say something.â
âYeah, Iâm here.â She answered flatly.
âGood, can we talk?â Dick asked, hearing the purr of a cat on the other end. âIs that Midnight?â He asked with a small chuckle, trying to lighten the mood.
âYeah, it is.â Carmen ruffled Midnightâs black fur and she let out a meow. âSay what you need to say.â
âI wanted to know how soon you could be in Detroit?â He asked and Carmen sat up, cautiously picking her next wordsâand debating hanging up.
âUhâŠâ She breathed, âcan you tell me why?â
âNot over the phone.â Dickâs reply sent a chill down her spine, she knew it was serious if he was asking. âThe ticket is already bought. Boardingâs at three.â
âDick, thatâs in two hours. I canât just drop everything and leave Midnight alone. How long am I even gonna be in Detroit?â Carmen continued her questioning, unsure if she was even willing to leave Gotham for him. After the way he left things, could you blame her?
âIâd take her with you. And it might be a long trip. Bring what you can.â He still continued to beat around the bush. âAnd the suit.â Carmen nodded, but not in agreement. She was disappointed, it always came down to the suit. Every damn time.
She hung up without another word and got up from her bed, pulled out her suitcase and cat carrier, and got to packing. âSwear to god, he better have paid for my bags.â

Carmen found herself at baggage claim with Midnight in tow. âDamn, youâre heavy, baby.â She reached into the carrier and scratched her catâs head. âJust gotta get our bags and weâll be away from all the noise, âkay?â By the time she was at the baggage carousel, Dick was already holding her bags. âThat might be the fastest this airline has ever spit my bags out. Howâd you know they were mine?â She greeted Dick, who awkwardly tried to hug her as a greetingâit was brief, to say the least.
âBesides all the cat hair?â Dick began to joke. âItâs purple with hearts drawn all over it. Very you.â Carmen swatted him and began walking. âYou donât even know where youâre going.â
âWell, tell me, then.â She sassed, grumpy from the flight and getting called in to help her ex-boyfriend with a work thing. A work thing she was still in the dark about until she got into the car.
âHi, Iâm Rachel. You must be Carmen.â The purple-haired girl introduced herself shyly, grabbing her hand to shake. Unbeknownst to Carmen, Rachel just got flashes of her pastâa rich past with Dick, the cop that was fighting to keep her safe.
âWhat the hell, Dick.â Carmen closed the car door gently, still standing outside the car with him. Sheâd handed off midnight to the teenager in the car, maybe they could comfort each other while she screamed at Dick out in the busy airport. âYou lured me all the fuckinâ way to Detroit to take care of a kid?!â
âYou donât know the full story yet, Carmen. Donât get ahead of yourself.â Dick raised a hand to put on her shoulder. âJust get in the car! I will explain as soon as itâs safe, but we need to get the fuck out of Detroit.â Carmen stared at him with tears in her eyes, feeling fooled when she didnât even know why. âDonât cry. Itâs not worth crying over. I need you in this car now.â
âI donât know why I even agreed to this.â She opened the passenger door and slammed it shut when she was situated. âSorry about that, Rachel. Itâs nice to meet you.â She turned to the back to check on her cat. âMidnight likes you.â She observed, watching her cat rub her face all over Rachelâs black clothes. âI have a lint roller if you need it.â Carmen and Rachel chuckled together.
âItâs okay. Sheâs sweet. Sheâs a girl, right?â Rachel asked. âI just assumed with the purple collar.â
âYes, she is, and sheâs a very proper lady, too.â Carmen joked, reaching back to pet Midnight and show off her diamond charm. âLikes her jewels.â Dick broke a little smile as he drove off, feeling guilty already that he dragged her into another one of his messes.
âWow, how fancy.â Rachel smirked. âCan she stay back here with me?â Her eyes shined with the slightest bit of joy when she looked up.
âOf course. Iâm a little tired from the flight, I think Iâll just rest my eyes in the meantime. Thanks for watching her.â Carmen leaned back into her seat and sighed, peering over at Dick. His jaw was clenched, eyes glued to the road ahead, and his knuckles were white as he held the steering wheel. âYou need to relax.â She poked him and he immediately took a deep breath.
âNot right now. You should get some rest, though.â Dick told her. âWeâll be on the road a while, but Iâll get a motel later tonight, okay?â
âYep.â Carmen sucked her teeth and shoved her hand in the front pocket of the bag in front of her, pulled out a sleep mask with cat eyes and whiskers sewed on the front. Once it covered her eyes, she was out.

Dick sat in the dining room of Wayne Manor pouting as he waited for Bruce to make a decision on the demands of him, Kaldur, Wally, and Superboy. âBruce has been down in the Batcave forever.â He grumbled. âI canât tell if heâs working on sanctioning our team or squashing it.â
âI believe, Master Dick, that the Batman asked for three daysââ Alfred tried to urge his patience, but Dick wasnât having it today.
âDemanded is more like it. And itâs been almost two and a half!â Dick huffed and slouched down in the head chair of the dining room table. âLeila wonât even give me a clue as to whatâs going on.â
âWhen Master Bruce says three,â Alfred explained, âhe means three.â
Meanwhile, Leila and Bruce argued below the Manor in the Batcaveâthe options were very limited.
âBruce, there is no part of me that wants to be apart of this team.â Leila began to push back. âIf I did, Iâd be on the Justice League by now.â
âThis wonât affect your relationship with the Justice League. At least, not that much.â Bruce began to explain. âYouâre one of their peers, you have enough experience to guide them so that one day they can one day be ready to take on greater responsibility.â
âI canât lead them, B. You know what I come from, you know thatâs not what I want. All my life Iâve been told Iâd lead the Shadows, now you want meâthe trained assassinâto take a group of kids and show them the way to be the best heroes they can be?â She was growing agitated as she got backed into a corner, and what Bruce says typically goes. Leila couldnât see a way out.
âReally? Youâre going to bring the Shadows into this? Youâve spent years distancing yourself from them and in this very instance you think thatâll be what saves you from being on this team?â Bruce scoffed at her last-ditch effort to excuse herself from this plan. âI need you to lead them by example. This has been your whole life, they need to see that with effort and sacrifice, they can be rewarded.â
âThis doesnât feel like a reward, Bruce. It feels like a chore youâre dumping on me.â Leila crossed her arms and looked up at the monitor that showed profile pictures of the new recruits. âAnd you already promised Jâonn weâd take in his niece, too?â She pointed to a Mâgaan Mâorzz, a martian stowaway, who was presented on the screen. âDid you already tell the Justice League I was in?â
âI told them you were appointed as their mentor.â Bruce admitted. âItâs not forever, Leila. I just need your help setting them straight and they listen to you. Theyâve always looked up to you. As the adults, we canât always trust theyâll understand our judgmentâbut if they see Demonspawn, the first protege, who is trusted on League missions and still treats them as peers, theyâll succeed for sure.â It wasnât that Leila didnât want to support them, she never knew love until she met the kid vigilantes who worshipped her for being the âcool assassin older sister.â She didnât this she was ready for it. Nor did she want to be the shot-caller. There was a long pause before she could say anything, and Bruce granted her the moment to think.
âMentor, yes. Leader, no.â She answered. âI can guide them, but I canât make the decisions for them. I can keep them as safe as I can, give them advice I wish I got, keep morale up. Thatâs what Iâm comfortable with.â Bruce cracked a light smirk, glad theyâd come to an understanding.
âAnd, when pertinent, you may join the League on crucial missions. Itâd be good for them to see you help outâmake a difference.â He corrected. âI do expect you to go on the Teamâs missions, theyâll be strictly covert while they learn the ropes together.â Leilaâs smile began to match his and she ran into his arms, something she didnât often do. Bruce hugged her back. âSo weâve reached an agreement?â

âSince the four of you are determined to stay together and fight the good fight,â Batman stood in front of the four boys inside of a hollowed out mountain Leila hadnât stepped foot inside in years, âYouâll do it on League terms.â
Leila was present, but she was distracted. Ollie had tried to reach out to Roy, but it was no luck. Although she felt guilty she hadnât reached out herself, it wasnât her job to clean up his messes. He had a chance to atone for his outburst, but she knew he wouldnât take it. And keeping Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Superboy on the straight and narrow was more important that keeping Roy in line.
âRed Tornado has volunteered to live here and be your supervisor.â Batman continued. âBlack Canaryâs in charge of training.â Leila stood ready for the news. âDemonspawn will be your mentor.â The boys all looked at her, wide-eyed. She couldnât tell if they were excited, intimidated, or both. âI will deploy you on missions.â
âReal missions?â Robin asked.
âYes, but covert.â Batman responded.
âThe League will still handle the obvious stuff. Thereâs a reason we have these targets on our chests.â The Flash added, pointing at the lightning bolt on his chest.
âBut Cadmus proves the bad guys are getting smarter. Batman needs a team that can operate on the sly.â Aquaman continued the narrative.
âThe six of you will be that team.â Batman said.
âCool!â Robin and the Team celebrated, then stopped in confusion. âWait, six?â
