The day of the pact, when the entire world changed for the better in the world of witches. Memories were erased from the mass population, the secret about magic only entrusted to those who promised to uphold the secret, to better the world, all for the greater good. Yet making laws doesn't stop the people who will break them, and the enforcement must be absolute or the structure will collapse…but what happens when the transgressor is a victim in their own right?

A rogue Utowin “brimmed hat” AU where he was branded by the brimmed hats with a spell that “enhances” his prowess, while slowly poisoning him from the inside, yet another expeirment, and the aftermath that follows.

How would you react if you woke up one day and forbiden magic had somehow been tattooed on your body by somebody else? Toooootallyyy not gonna make a world where this happens to you or anything just full speculation :3

Some thoughts on Utowin and how he sees himself that have plagued me all day.. canon might correct me at a later point, but from what I've seen so far I think he carries a rather complex form of low self-worth with him that has solidified over the years until it's become indistinguishable from his personality (to him). He is not in a fragile state, he is not on the verge of breaking down over it, he is not self-loathing (overtly) or has such low self-worth that he'd let others walk all over him – in fact he has multiple traits of someone with a seemingly good confidence in himself. He is sociable, chatty, daring, funny, cocky.. and I wouldn't say that's all just for show while deep down he thinks he's a loser and needs to pretend. That would be too simple.
There are things he is good at and things he can do; he does have traits that are worth something, he's smart, he's loyal, he is physically fit & strong, he gets shit done. It's just all.. eh. He's mediocre where it matters. He's lucky he found something he can throw himself at with all he has (the Knights) – but "all he has" is like 30% of what other people can give. Unlike most witches, he doesn't struggle with understanding or being able to learn some complex spells, he already struggles with sitting down and reading the damn books. He doesn't even get to the complex stuff. How was he ever going to be something great? He can barely scrape the surface. And after an entire childhood of that and all adults around him telling him repeatedly that "boys like him" won't ever amount to anything "unless they change" – a change that was completely unreachable to him (because nobody cared to find a way that helped him specifically) – he became a "man like that" and now that's who he is.
He's arranged himself with it, he's found something to do and someone to follow. But he doesn't see himself as great or outstanding in any way. He might see the basic usefulness of what he does, but it often feels like base level stuff. Why feel proud of something that most people could do? If he is good at something then it's nothing amazing to begin with. Achievements don't really feel like such, they're just something he didn't quit half-way through for once.
So the self-deprecating comments are like breathing to him at this point; he doesn't say them to get attention, he genuinely feels that way. Maybe there is some subconscious part of him that also says them to hear someone tell him it's not true – the little boy who never heard praise from e.g. his own father? – but the conscious part is his own inner voice that has learned to repeat what he knows to be true. He is not a good witch and he never will be. He is grateful for the Knights and his duties, because it's a ready-made path he can walk and someone else's orders he can follow and it means he doesn't have to think about all the grand discoveries and innovations and achievements he would fail at spectacularly if he even so much as tried.
The only thing that really makes him question these things he says about himself, like when he downplays himself or something he did, is when someone else criticizes that in the right way. Like Easthies saying he wouldn't trust just anyone to watch his back. It takes him aback, because while his own opinion of himself is crap, he values Easthies' opinion (in general), so to hear that his negative comments somehow end up insulting Easthies puts him in a bit of an uncomfortable box that forces him to think about his own automated self-rejection.

This is so well written and is all the words I couldn't manage to find- I'm going to steal this and keep it as a note on the side for his characterization in my au.
Trying to figure out if I want Utowin to wake up and realize he has the sigil marked on him beforehand or like be in a sparing match with Easthies and it gets pointed out to him at some point by Easthies and they both have their shocker moment.
Leaning towards both finding out in the sparing match cause the heightened emotions would push what needs to happen for the main dilemma and plot (utowin running off compared to just trying to talk things out (well he does that at first but it dosen't work- this is Easthies were talking about)) esp if it's on his backkk- he's not gonna notice that *casually takes all mirrors out of his room*
On the Easthies side of things I can see him believing Utowin and what he says about how the mark got there but also start questioning literally eveything like has he been a spy? Sent to let his guard down? He dosen't plan to make an exception esp depending on how Utowin reacts

WOW this is a huge question and it could go many ways really but I'll just start going down off the top of my head and see what happens-
-General Analysis-
I didn't think much about Utowin or the other knights in general before I started making the concept of my au (which I plan to have chapter 1 out soon on ao3) he just seemed like a silly guy before I went down the Easwin spiral which really sparked my interest in him and I really do need to study him more so I dont mischaracterize him.
When I think about his personality I see him as somebody very dependent on others because of his backstory, just needing one person to take that chance on him, which is why I see him as fairly people pleasing in a regard and why in my AU losing that footing is really going to throw him for a loop. Easthies really is his rock in more ways then one.
I see his laid back personality as a way to cope with his spiraling thoughts because of his self worth issues that he constantly deals with which to me, also opens the door that if his mental state ever declines very, very far, it could push him to cause small acts of harm in order to assist the people that had gotten harmed to heal that hole, but again it would take a lot to push our silly adhd baby to that.
He also stood out to me more as I got more intirested in the knights because he's like a foil to Easthies, as we even see him starting to doubt the pact as events go on in the manga compared to Easthies and his whole situation once he realized what was going on.
-AU Concepts-
This whole universe really is going to be a character study of some kind for Utowin because like mentioned earlier, hes losing his rock once he realizes he's been branded. Even if Easthies was even SLIGHTLY easier on him because of his inner conflict Utowin would take it so personally because of his insecurities and as we see in chapter 97 him asking to Easthies "Would you even have wiped my memorries?" Showing the distinction he makes himself between him and others when it comes to his close friends.
I doubt his low self worth will get much better at all before the either bittersweet or unhappy ending of this universe because once he leaves the knights he is going to have to draw spells more then he did at the knights if he ever did there, and as we saw from his childhood he didnt take well to this studies. Even though years have passed and he has probably made much more progress with his spell knowledge I can see him getting frustrated with imbalanced seals or a slight shaky hand while he draws for himself or to assist others he passes by. Him needing to draw is actually why I have his knights cloak on his side in one of the design conceps I posted because he needs a way to hide his hands if he plans to draw in front if people ever for whatever reason.
I call it a "brimhat" au but hes really not much of the sort at all. The deep void he carries because he basically lost eveything would push him to do the only thing he can think of resembling his own life which is chase after the brimhat who did this to him like he would if he was still part of his squad.
Oh also as soon as he found a large stick in the forest he started playing with it like it was a sword like all 5 year old do before either sharpening it into something resembling a spear or leaving it.
-Other blorbs-
I really just like his design in general and it furthers my belief that him and easthies are parallels or foils of some kind, depending on if easthies likes utowin back and other factors, to olruggio and qifreys relationship.
What did they put in the water in olly and utowins hometown that causes this kind of yearning and devotion I want it
I really really want to see something of Utowins teenage years when him and Easthies are first joining the knights moralis, and his reaction when Easthies becomes deputy captain cause I feel like it would also show us more of his character.
This was a lot and I probably have more to say but it will probably come out eventually, hopefully this is all what you ment haha!
I feel like what would push utowin to leave the knights (after being marked in my " brimhat"au) or go would easily be a mix of his heightened emotiones at the time figuring out "oh god there is a sigil on me back/shoulder maybe somewhere" and Easthies snaping at him when he finds out given how strict he is with the pact, he would take it fairly personally like we even saw in chapter 97 "Would you even erase my memorries?" It would make him feel like he lost his footing so he would turn to what he can do, and thats chase down the brimhat that did this to him while being chased down by his old friends at the same time. (May be slightly ooc i need to study him more)

Trying to concept his outfit too for this AU when he first leaves, as much as I want to do a full on brimhat outfit I doubt he would ever actually take a brim if anything it would be very very deep into the story and plot. I think he would try to hold onto what he has of his knights moralis uniform as much as possible as a physical way to try and stay grounded and cope with the entire situation. Another detail I need to draw better is how he has sloppy bandages from injuries that may or may not get infected brcause he dosent know how to properly apply them.
He would also go through a moment or two if he ever had to draw a simple spell for whatever reason considering his backstory and lack of super steady knowledge/being able to put it into practice.
Really gonna try my best to bring this all to life and keep characterization the best I can, I need to re-read their chapters soonnnn
How would you feel if you found out Utowin or one of your squad mates had used forbiden magic in the past/had a seal hidden on their body?
The rules of the pact are very clear. I would personally escort any of my squad that used forbidden magic to Adanlee.
[However, on the Discord Easthies has, himself, used forbidden magic and is slowly turning into the embodiment of Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Can't beat 'em? Destroy them with their own tactics.]
Okay you've heard of Brimhat Qifrey aus, Brimhat Olruggio aus. But what about Brimhat Easwin?
The urge to write a brimhat/rogue Utowin au with easthies chasing after him and constantly being at war with his sense of self and the one person he trusted as a kid and maybe even as an adult if utowin had been hiding something for some reason for rhe plot until now.
I can see him either getting caught up in a brimhat scheme getting branded by the brimmed hats by forbiden magic against his will either well awake or passed out for some reason and it eventually spirals into him leaving the knights even though he dosen't want to because Easthies of all people found out and just snaped.
He would become a rouge like figure and although like as we've seen in the second test arc it could be hidden with Easthies by his side if he found out, even if Utowin was the victim it would not go well.
The fic could dive in the now much more complicated relationship between utowin and his potential doubt in the pact now but his belief and trust in easthies, despite them being on opposite sides and easthies hunting him down while Utowin goes around doing who knows what for a while before eventually maybe using some small spells to help people, forbiden, slightly forbiden, or completely normal. All while Easthies is on a desperate hunt to finally catch him and dealing with his complicated relationship with the pact, he used to be so sure after all brimhats killed his family or something but with this whole situation of Utowin not doing anything inherently wrong and being chased, it may finally plant something.
Oh yeah Easwin is chill too these guys are also made for eachother- since orufrey is doomed can they at least be happy?....if they can finally get together officially when Easthies is Easthies...
Why do I feel like Utowin would be trying so damn hard to court Easthies and it just keeps messing up, not because Easthies is unaffected(he is but just hides it) but because his obsession with the pact leaves no room for it.
Easthies PLEASE relax for a moment and love your man and show it to him so he finally can stop ruthlessly pining.
Thought I' mess around with my artstyle and some Greek inspired outfits..? I was just going without thinking and said hey ykw why not make it Orufrey because Orufrey is eveywhere and in eveything so this came out.
I feel like Olruggios relationship with the girls is like whenever a family gets a dog or a cat, some type of pet and the father wants NOTHING to do with it, and then proceeds to become inseparable from the bunch. He will not let ANYTHING happen to them as much as Qifrey if not more.
Who cares if those arn't his aprentices he will love and raise them with all the care in the world while making sure his husband dosent get eveyone killed with his brimhat hyperfixation.
Witch hat atelier has had me in a chokehold since the beginning and esp after finishing the manga so far I need to see more of these gay husbands helping their 4 daughters while one of them tries to casually get revenge. Spoilers for up to 93 under the cut
