Sumiré was meant to just be a bird in a gilded cage.
Her duties were to keep the energies within Kalos in check, energies that had gone wild and out of sync since the firing of the Ultimate Weapon nearly 3000 years previously. Due to the past, this duties falls onto her shoulders alone and she was meant to be kept in a cage, meant to serve.
However, her mother had different ideas as the previous Moon Maiden of Kalos.
Sumiré spent much of her youth pretending to be a boy, experiencing as much freedom as was allowed for her. Even going so far as attempting the League challenge, having adventures all over Kalos, the region in which she had been born to. Her formal education as a shrine maiden only began when she hit thirteen years old and she assumed the duties of Kalos' sole Moon Maiden at the tender age of 16. Her movements from then on were highly restricted, both by the clan and by the governing bodies of the region.
She was slated to be stuck forever, just like her mother, until it was time for the next generation was to be born. Her only solace was her half brother who would bring people to visit her, or even followed on a few of her duties throughout Kalos. While restricted, Sumiré still managed to stay cheerful, finding joy in meeting people and making friends when she could.
It was still lonely at times, but she took her duty quite seriously.
Right until the end of her days, Sumiré lived her life as hard as she could, believing that one must experience everything possible. That everything had a beauty to it, if you looked. Everything was meant to be on this world, for better or worse.
Her greatest joy was in becoming a mother herself and she spent quite a few years blissfully in marriage and motherhood. Although the path to that happiness had been quite thorny, many people from various sides not agreeing whom her partner would be and some even going as far as to thinking they could take away her newly born daughter from her so that there would be no 'favouritism'. Sumiré fought back on everything and making compromises where she could not.
Ultimately, her fate was to die relatively young during a Moon Festival, an event that usually saw at least one Moon Maiden face her death against powerful entities from beyond the veil each time it happened. In truth, her daughter, only eight years old, had been chosen to be the 'sacrifice' that year in a rigged lottery. Her hand was forced and Sumiré took her child's place in order to save her and lost her life as a result due to the selfish machinations of others.
