personality analysis of our dynamic trio: dio, hermes, and apollo (more so apollo tho). thought about this because i feel like a lot of myths more so focus on the action of the gods in direct consequence of mortals and their shenanigans. saw some description of an apollo statue that described a melancholy in his eyes and yet nothingness after he shoots the arrow (i think this was apollo belvedere) and it really had me thinking. Sometimes apollo does seems apathetic + melancholic at times.
Mythwise they might not have many where they interact. But Apollo burying Dionysus' body parts in his temple and Hermes being in charge of safeguarding Dionysus makes me think that Apollo and Hermes together watched over baby Dionysus. What confirmed my thoughts of them being the pantheon's chaotic trio is that they're the major gods in charge of parties/banquets. How can they not be the closest and the best trio up there?? Can you imagine how out of the world amazing those parties would be?? Hermes and Apollo promised to love each other forever, Apollo puts Dionysus in charge of Delphi when he is away. This made me think that they're really close and put a lot of trust in the other. Here have some ancient greek art that I think sums up their relationship lol
(Left to right) Apollo, Hermes, Dionysus in a banquet
(Left to right) Dionysus, Apollo and Hermes. They're listening to Apollo's music
This one is my favorite. Here two satyrs have dressed up as Apollo and Hermes to entertain Dionysus. I really love this because I imagine that Dionysus asks his servants to do this whenever he misses his bros. Gotta love those three 💖
To answer the other question - yes, Apollo is apathetic in some of the myths. He can also become very cruel if he is angered. Take Marsays for example. There is also another myth where Apollo defeats a tyrant named Phorbas in a boxing match, and Apollo is described as having "a smile mingled with wrath" when he kills his opponent. He is also a god who sometimes completely distances himself from humanity. Actually, that's taken to be a very defining trait of his. Many of his titles mean "he who works from afar", implying that Apollo likes to maintain his distance at times. But that doesn't mean he is totally emotionless and unhelpful. He regretted killing Marsyas so much that he broke his lyre and stayed away from music for a long time. The way he mourns over his dead lovers and children prove that he feels emotions more deeply than any other god does. And even staying afar, he has sent help to many who have prayed to him, like Orestes, the Argonauts, etc. He is in charge of some domains that are involved in daily lives of humans. He is also one of the most epiphanic gods, along with Artemis and Dionysus. This is a very interesting part of Apollo's duality. Someone had described that Apollo is the most divine yet the most human, and I couldn't agree more with them.
