My grandma bought me the Heroes of Olympus collection, and to leave my mark I made this drawing on the cover of the book The Son of Neptune, which is my favorite because of my baby Octavian ^-^ I drew his bangs inspired by my friend Wens' cosplay on TikTok @edens-magic-drawings @wens-loves-wednesday, both of her accounts, including the arrows and decorations, are from an RP plaque she made for me, and I'm using it to decorate this post ^-^
Minha vó comprou a coleção de Heróis do Olimpo pra mim, e pra deixar minha marca registrada eu fiz esse desenho na capa do livro O Filho de Netuno, que é o meu favorito por causa do meu nenê Octavian ^-^ a franjinha dele eu fiz inspirada no cosplay da minha amiga Wens do tik tok @edens-magic-drawings @wens-loves-wednesday, as duas contas dela, e inclusive as flechas e decorações são de uma plaquinha de Rp que ela fez pra mim e tô usando pra decorar esse post ^-^
I love that in Blood of Olympus we see Octavian showing a vulnerable side of himself, telling Michael Kahale about his problem with the gift of prophecy, and at the same time it's so tragic since we know the ending because Octavian asks Michael to take care of him and Michael lets him kill himself. Despite how tragic this friendship is, I have some thoughts I want to share, which also serve as a continuation of my last Octavian Kahale post, "The Accolade of Michael Kahale".
Eu amo que em Sangue do Olimpo temos o Octavian mostrando um lado vulnerável dele, contando o seu problema com o dom da profecia pro Michael Kahale, e ao mesmo tempo é tão trágico já que sabemos o final já que Octavian pede pra Michael cuidar dele e o Michael o deixa se matar. Apesar do quão trágico é essa amizade, eu tenho alguns pensamentos que quero compartilhar, que inclusive também serve de continuação pro meu último post de octakahale, "The Accolade of Michael Kahale".
Regarding my Octavian design, I was thinking more about his visual appearance and I remembered Heliogabalus. My Octavian follows Apollo's clothing pattern, so he represents the human connection with the divine, literally his function as augur and Pontifex, as the voice of the gods. The fact that my Octavian's appearance resembles Apollo's is meant to reflect him following the god, since Apollo is the example of beauty for Octavian, the example of what is right. Apollo is the spirit, the connection between the human and the divine, and therefore Octavian reflects this as his follower. His imperial cloak is reminiscent of Julius Caesar but mainly of Apollo, and that's why the flowing skirt, like moving sheets, is symbolic, since moving sheets were associated with the contact between this world and the other, ghosts for example. Octavian's clothing represents his connection with the divine, and his example of beauty is the grace of Apollo, and that's why he appears "effeminate"—it's actually a cultural shock, similar to what happened with Heliogabalus, with his customs, Octavian grew up with Apollo's legacy, and so the example of beauty for him is the god. Octavian doesn't seek strength; he seeks control, a control that is found in the divine. So, while others seek beauty in strength and glory, Octavian, like the Octavian of the past, seeks control, and soon finds it by being the voice of the gods. This is what his entire visual appearance represents. While for others the example of beauty is the masculine strength of Mars/Ares, what Octavian has as an example is Apollo because of the pursuit of grace, control, and connection with the divine. That's why when I draw him, I think a lot about the Hellenistic religion and everything the character represents. Octavian adores the gods, and this is reflected in him entirely.
Sobre meu desing do Octavian eu tava pensando mais no visual dele e lembrei do Heliogábalo, meu Octavian segue o padrão de vestimenta de Apolo então ele representa o contato do humano com o divino, literalmente a função dele como áugure e Pontifex como a voz dos deuses, o visual do meu Octavian sendo parecido com o de Apolo é pra remeter a ele seguindo o deus já que ele é o exemplo de beleza para Octavian, o exemplo do correto, Apollon é o espírito a conexão do humano com o divino, e logo Octavian remete a isso como seu seguidor, o seu manto imperial remete tanto a Júlio Cesar mas principalmente a Apolo e por isso a saia rodada igual a lençóis que se mexem é simbólica já que lençóis se mexendo eram associados ao contato desse mundo com o outro, fantasmas por exemplo, a roupa de Octavian é ele se conectando com o divino e o exemplo dele de beleza é a graça de Apolo, e por isso ele ficar "afeminado"— na verdade é um choque cultural igual aconteceu com Heliogábalo com seus costumes, o Octavian cresceu com legados de Apolo e logo o exemplo de beleza pra ele é o deus e Octavian não busca força, ele busca controle, controle esse que se acha no divino. Então, enquanto os outros buscam beleza na força e glória, Octavian assim como Octaviano passado busca o controle, e logo o encontra sendo voz dos deuses e isso é o que todo o visual dele representa, enquanto pra outros o exemplo de beleza é a força masculina de Marte/Ares, o que Octavian tem como exemplo é Apolo por causa da busca da graça, controle e conexão com o divino, e por isso quando vou desenhar ele eu penso bastante na religião do helenismo e em tudo que o personagem representa, Octavian adora os deuses e isso é refletido nele por inteiro.
Michael is the counterpart; he is strong. Being a son of Venus, he feels things, while Octavian tries not to feel in order to remain the voice of the gods all the time. He has the physical beauty of Mars, and Octavian is more Phoebus-like, but that's not 100%. The divine fire that Octavian represents also burns, and Michael's emotions also stabilize. So, in the end, they are counterparts that don't extinguish each other: they complement each other.
O Michael é a contrapartida; ele é forte, ele sendo um filho de Vênus ele sente enquanto Octavian tenta não sentir pra ficar sendo a voz dos deuses toda hora, ele tem o físico de beleza mais Marte e Octavian mais Febo, mas isso não é 100%, o fogo divino que Octavian representa também queima, e a emoção de Michael também estabiliza, então no fim eles são contrapartidas que não apagam um ao outro: se completam.
And this comes from my favorite myth, which is Hermes stealing Apollo's cattle, because it's the meeting of spirit and soul, and in the end, Apollo never loved anyone more than Hermes. Hermes is speed, Apollo is heat, and in the end, they represent what it is to be alive. This force of the soul is what I love most about Hellenism. Everything that moves is alive, that's what Hermes represents, everything that makes heat is alive, that's what Apollo represents, the divine fire that warms also burns, Apollo's destruction comes to purify, it is this archetype of Apollo that I work with in Octavian, the emotion of Venus also brings the necessary purity and balance, it is this archetype that I work with in Michael and in his strength since Venus is also a goddess of war
E isso vem do meu mito favorito que é Hermes roubando o gado de Apollo porque é o encontro do espírito com a alma e no fim da história Apollo nunca amou ninguém mais do que Hermes, o Hermes é a velocidade, Apollo é o calor, e no fim eles representam o que é estar vivo, essa força da alma é o que eu mais amo no helenismo. Tudo que se mexe está vivo, é isso que representa Hermes, tudo que faz calor está vivo, é isso que representa Apollon, o fogo divino que aquece também queima, a destruição de Apollon vem para purificar, é esse arquétipo de Apollo que eu trabalho no Octavian, a emoção de Vênus também trás pureza e equilíbrio necessário, é esse o arquétipo dela que trabalho em Michael e na sua força já que Vênus tbm é deusa de guerra.
I'll just conclude one more thing in my thinking: Octavian and Michael are opposites that attract, but not in the way you expect, normally we expect the opposite of reason to conflict with that of emotion and be right, but it is Michael who regulates Octavian, it is he bringing his human presence that makes Octavian relax from being the encounter with the human and the divine all the time, because in fact Octavian works too much and Michael is the one who reminds him to have a connection with the human world as well, being this anchor that prevents Octavian's divine fire from burning, while the augur is the one who makes Michael remember why he is fighting and the Because he needs to be disciplined since someone is waiting for him at home, so at no point does one overshadow the other; they complement and support each other without changing their ideals.
Eu só vou concluir mais uma coisa no meu pensamento: Octavian e Michael são opostos que se atraem, mas não do jeito que se espera, normalmente a gente espera que o oposto da razão entre em conflito com o da emoção e esteja certo, mas é Michael quem regula Octavian, é ele trazendo sua presença humana que faz Octavian relaxar de ser o encontro com humano e o divino o tempo todo, porque de fato Octavian trabalha demais e Michael é quem lembra ele de ter conexão com o mundo humano também, sendo essa âncora que impede o fogo divino de Octavian de queimar, enquanto o áugure é quem faz Michael lembrar do porquê está lutando e o porquê tem que ser disciplinado já que tem alguém o esperando em casa, então em nenhum momento um apaga o outro, ambos se completam e se sustentam um no outro sem mudar seus ideais.

I used correction fluid for the white details, and a booby goody pen for everything else. To sign, I used a regular black ballpoint pen, which I also used to draw the mouth. The laurel wreaths were made of real leaves, so I wanted to do it that way. The dress is a tunic, as are the accessories, and the garden of pink flowers is because I love the painting "The Roses of Heliogabalus" :D
Eu usei caneta de corretivo para os detalhes brancos, e caneta de booby goody para todo o resto. Para assinar uma caneta bic preta normal, que também usei para desenhar a boca. As coroas de louros eram de folhas de verdade então quis fazer desse jeito, o vestido é uma túnica assim como os acessórios, e o jardim de flores rosas é por causa que amo o quadro "Rosas de Heliogábalo" :D
