Silver Ring (Steve Harrington x fem!reader)
Steve was acting a bit different for the last few weeks. Your mind raced to hasty conclusions, but you soon found out Steve had a different plan, which involved a silver diamond ring.
1,5k: established relationship, fluff, proposal, nervous steve, slight angst
setting: pre season 5
a/n: maybe a bit rushed, but after that unproposal i needed a real, fluffy proposal (not totally proofread)
After a couple of beers, you sometimes seemed to be turning into a very emotional version of you, thrilled to spill your thoughts.
So, after a very long day of doing absolutely nothing, a beer was in need. You and Robin sat in the kitchen, talking about life when, or rather if the Upside Down ends. It was a conversation that always brought hope, but also fear of the end.
“Where would you go? When the army leaves.” you asked Robin, taking another sip.
“I don’t know. I want to see New York. Maybe go to a concert.” Robin took another beer from the fridge. “What about you? You wanna marry Steve one day?”
The question caught you off guard, but you smiled, already knowing the answer. “Yeah, I really do. You know, I always wanted to get married young.”
You and Steve have been together for almost three years. Your relationship was everything you’ve ever wanted. He had such a big heart and there wasn’t a thing he wouldn’t do for you. Of course, he was also ridiculously handsome.
You haven’t talked that much about getting married. It’s just something you knew will happen one day. Of course, Steve sometimes teased you with “I’ll marry you someday”. He always said it so genuinely that you had no doubt he’ll propose one day.
You could tell something was wrong.
Something has been different for the last two weeks. When you were talking, Steve was kind of zoning out, like his mind was somewhere far away. And you noticed that when he was chatting with Robin and you entered the room, they quickly stopped talking. As if they were hiding something from you.
And you didn’t know why. It’s not like this could be considered a relationship problem. You’ve always been anxious and now you sometimes had the feeling that he wanted to break up with you. Which is absolutely ridiculous. You haven't even had any major fights. You were probably worrying for no reason, as always.
But it tormented you with every day that passed.
When you asked Steve about it, he hugged and kissed you.
“Nothing’s wrong, baby. I’m fine. We’re fine.” he assured you. “I’ve just had a lot of things on my mind.”
“You know you can talk to me, right?”
“Of course I know.” and gently pulled you in his lap. He wrapped his arms around you. He was radiating love. And you could feel it.
“I love you, Steve. So much.”
“I love you too.” he said, kissing your forehead.
And you believed him, because he's always been nothing but honest to you. But it kept happening and it’s bugging you.
A few days passed and now you were sure there was a problem. Steve was always fidgeting when he was around you.
You noticed he wasn’t sleeping well. And now your mind was racing to another awful place. What if it was Vecna. He didn’t mention nightmares or seeing things that were’t there. He wouldn’t keep that away from you, would he?
You had to talk to him again.
Rockin’ Robin was on duty this late afternoon. You loved that about the Squawk. Music was almost always playing. You discovered so many artists and albums every day. You even started playing the guitar.
“Hello again, Hawkins!” Robin said into the microphone. “There’s something in the air today, people! Can you feel it? Tonight the forecast announces a romantic evening with a heavy chance of falling in love! So grab your partner or tell your crush you like them, people! You’re in for a tender evening with Rockin’ Robin!” Soon after, she played “I Will” by The Beatles.
In the living room, Steve was watching you play the guitar at the same time as the song on the speakers, softly humming the words.
“What’s up with Robin? Is she planning something for Vickie?” you asked, putting away the guitar.
“Maybe. You know her.” he answered. He turned, looking deep into your eyes. “I’ve been-“ Steve started with an unusual troubled and, at the same time, confident voice. He took a breath, collecting his thoughts.
Robin must really be feeling romantic and hopeful even, because “Heaven” by Bryan Adams was now playing. The orange sunset light was brightening Steve’s features. You squinted at his sudden seriousness.
“Something’s been on my mind for a while. And I-“ He was playing with something in his pocket. When he took it out, you saw a silver circle. A ring with a white, elegant stone. “I got this. For you.” he stuttered.
Baby, you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in Heaven
He stood up from the couch and slowly got down on one knee. “Marry me.”
“What?” Your heart racing, completely forgetting about why you wanted to speak with him.
“Marry me.” He saw the surprised look on your face and explained. “Look, I know we’re young, but we’re literally waiting for the world to end here. And I know a lot of people would say it’s a bad move right now.”
Steve took your hand into his. He was nervous. Nervous not to mess this up.
“But sometimes I feel like we’re running out of time.” he continued. “Like something bad will happen any moment. And when Vecna returns, things will be bad again. We’ll constantly be in danger. And if something happens to me…”
“Don’t talk like that.” you interrupted him, suddenly having the image of a breathless Steve lying next to you.
“But it’s true! The point is, if something bad will happen, I want to have the memory of you in a white dress saying yes. I love you so much. A-And after all this whole mess is over we’ll buy a house. Start life together. A new life.” Tears came to his eyes, letting out a small, joyful laugh. “So, will you marry me?”
“Yes.” You whispered, tears forming in your eyes. “Yes!” this time louder, wrapping your arms around his neck and laughing into his neck.
Steve let out a long breath and started laughing with you. When you pulled away, he took your hand and slid the ring on your finger.
“I want all of it, Steve. The house, the new life, you. I want you. All of you.” you promised. Your lips were now on his. Steve hummed into the kiss. At first, it was slow, but it grew deeper and Steve started kissing you with hunger.
When it ended, you both breathed slowly, taking in the depth of this moment. What this meant for you. A fresh start. Someday. With Steve.
You were twisting the silver jewel on your finger. “How long have you had this with you?”
“The ring? Fifteen days. It sat like a rock in my pocket.”
He’s been planing this for a while. Of course he’s been thinking about it for a long time, but he bought the ring when he accidentally heard a conversation between you and Robin. About how you wanted to marry him one day.
You gasped after hearing the story.
“That’s why I was always whispering with Robin. I told her I wanted to propose.” he explained.
“Oh my god, I was so stupid.” you exhaled.
“What? Why?” he frowned.
“You were acting so weird and I genuinely thought you wanted to break up with me. Or worse, that Vecna possessed you. I’m sorry, you know I’m always worrying.”
“Jesus, baby. No, no, every time I look at you I only thought about this moment. I wanted it to be perfect.”
You grinned. “It was. More than perfect.”
Steve grinned. “My wife.” he said, kissing you deep.
“Fiancée, pretty boy.” you smiled between kisses.
“Yeah, but soon wife.”
“We have to tell the others!”
“Can’t we keep this a secret for now?” he groaned, burying his head in your arms. “You won’t be able to shut Dustin up for a month.”
“They’ll see the ring. And yeah, Dustin will freak out. In a good way.”
Like he was summoned, the curly haired boy entered the room with snacks and a book.
“What’s up with Robin and all these love songs? And what are you two smiling about?” He sat next to you, opening a science textbook.
You and Steve shared a look and burst out laughing.
“Am I missing something?”
You slowly showed him your left hand, waiting for his reaction. Man, you really needed a camera right now.
“What’s-“ His eyes widened, moving his eyes quickly between you, Steve and the ring, putting the pieces together. “Oh my God. Are you really?” he asked, a wide smile forming on his face.
“Yeah.” you both answered. “We’re getting married.”
“You’re getting married.” Dustin repeated, not believing his ears. “Holy shit! You’re getting married!” he cheered, throwing himself at you two and hugging you.
“Easy, buddy.” Steve laughed.
“We’re have to plan the wedding. I’m gonna be the greatest best man ever!”
“So you self proclaimed my best man now?” Steve teased.
“Duh! I’m your best friend. So, as the best man, I’m in charge with planning the wedding. When do we start?”
“Whoa, we have to tell the others first.”
I want to write a fanfic about an avoidant steve not dealing with his trauma he has from the russians (hurt/confort) Should it be:
Friends to lovers- confession
Established relationship
Lie To Me (Steve Harrington x fem!reader)
steve gives up on love after you unknowingly shattered his hopes, until one day he admits to Robin he is still hopelessly in love with you
5,4k: lovesick idiot steve, (kinda) awkward reader, so much mutual pining it hurts, angst, steve takes a punch for you, accidental heartbreak, fluff, love confession, idiots in love, yearning, matchmaker robin, protective!steve,
a/n: i recommend listening to “Lie to me” by Chris Isaak while reading the last part!
Dustin Herderson has had enough. Enough of Steve’s constant whining about love. They were at the Henderson house and Steve was fixing Claudia’s car.
“Have you always been this pathetic or is this the first time I actively listened to your moaning about your love life.” said Dustin, leaning on the trunk.
Steve looked at him with a blank look on his face. “Thanks dude”
“Seriously Steve, are you actually hearing what you’re saying? It’s always the same speech. How you like a girl, you trying to get her attention. Actually, in the past what? two months you weren’t even talking about a girl. Just the same Oh, Dustin, I’m so pathetic and lame and I do my hair every day and no girl likes me. I just want to make out with someone because I’m so lonely!” Dustin mocks him while fake crying.
“Hey, enough! Come on man, I don’t sound like that!” he warned, pointing a screwdriver at him.
“You keep telling yourself that. Jesus, man. You should just give up.”
Steve puffed and leaned over the engine. Give up. How can he give up on the one thing he’s always wanted. Love. He knows it’s cheesy and lame to chase after the same dream after all these years. But, God, does he want it more than ever.
“Can you believe it, Robin! That attitude!” Steve said while sorting movie tapes.
“You’re an idiot for talking about your love life with a fourteen year old.” Robin muttered, leaning her chin on her palm, bored out of her mind.
“And then he told me to give up. Rob, I don’t know why, but that little shit gets to me. It shouldn’t even piss me off this bad.” Steve grumbled. He looked at the shelves, realising he’s been putting romance movies in the crime section. Ironic.
Robin’s face light up. “Maybe that’s it!”
“That’s what?” he asked, taking all the tapes back from the shelf.
“You should give up! It’s brilliant actually.”
“I don-“ Steve looked at her confused.
“Give up on love. Forget it. Think about it. If you aren’t living in a constant state of waiting for romance to happen, love will find you on its own! My mother says ‘good things come when you’re not expecting’.”
Steve stared at her, but he didn’t get a chance to respond, because the bell above the door rang. He turned his head to the door.
When his eyes landed on you he almost dropped the tapes. The world faded for a few moments. There you were. The reason he’s been going mad for the last God knows how many months. He blinked fast, like you were an illusion he tried to get rid of. Not because he did’t want to see you. Because he just couldn’t keep looking at you and not say the truth. Steve stumbled behind the counter.
“Oh my God.” Robin said, turning her head between you, who were closing the door, unaware of the puppy eyes the boy gave you, and Steve, who was practically melting on the ground. “Why didn’t you tell me! How long?” She whispered excitedly.
“Don’t say a word, Rob.” Steve warned her while you walked to the counter. Robin just smiled with mischief in her eyes. This explained so much.
“What are you two whispering about?” you asked.
“Nothing!” Robin exclaimed, maybe a little too fast and Steve exhaled, already done with her. That’s why he didn’t tell her. Steve knew Robin would get all excited and fidgety every time you two were in a room together. “How are you, darling? And how can we help you today?” she asked you, a wide smile on her face. She kicked Steve under the counter.
“Ah! What the-“ he gasped, earning a suggestive look from Robin. “I mean yeah how can we help you?” he said. Steve tried not to stare, but you were so goddamn pretty. Steve loved your colorful eyeshadow. Each day you wore a different color.
You just looked at them, not knowing what’s going on. “You guys are idiots.” you smiled, still a bit suspicious. “I just came to return this.” handing Robin the tape. “And I want another movie.”
“Right. Well I got some work to do in the back, but Steve here is all free to help.” she said, shoving the tape into his hands. Robin grinned at you and turned to leave, not without giving Steve a proud smile, like she just set you two up for direct marriage.
Steve was left speechless.
“What the hell is going on. Did she smoke something?” you asked him, following Robin with your eyes.
“I honestly don’t know and don’t want to know.” He looked at you, his heart burning, but he avoided your eyes the second you gazed at him. “So, what movie do you wanna get?”
“The Godfather”
“Really? After Grease you think The Godfather will be a good follow up? Don’t think the guy will sing.” he laughed while walking to the drama section. You were following him with a smile on your face.
“I can’t watch musicals all day. I mean I like them, but it gets to a point. Also, Al Pacino’s in it.”
“Al Pacino? That’s why you’re watching it.” He found the tape. He stood up, looking into your eyes while handing you the movie. “So what, that’s your type?” You grabbed the tape, feeling warmth in your cheeks.
“I don’t have a type. If I like a guy, it’s not only for his looks. I have to like what’s behind all that.” you said, gazing deep into his brown eyes, hoping he read between the lines, but his mind went in a completely different direction.
Steve’s thoughts cleared and his hopes shattered. That was it. You didn’t like him. Of course you didn’t, he thought. He was just a pretty face to you, nothing more. A sharp pain shot through his heart. He hoped his expression didn’t give away the heartbreak. He was annoyed with himself, because at first he thought you liked him too. He thought he had a chance. During your visits at Family Video there were plenty witty banter between you, but he must have read it wrong.
You were staring at each other, feeling the sudden tension. Looking down, you realised Steve was still holding the tape. When he let go, his digits were pale from clenching it and his fingers were slightly shaking.
The check-out was awkward and you left with a quick ‘Bye’, basically running out of there.
Robin came back when she heard the door closing. “So, did the Steve charm work?” She stopped, seeing Steve’s devastated eyes. “What happened?”
“I-I don’t know” Steve’s gaze followed you. When you disappeared after a building his decision was made. “You’re right.” he said with a shaky voice, rubbing his face with his palms. “I have to give up.”
“What? No!” she yelled.
“This was your idea!”
“Yeah, before I knew this was all about her. Why did she leave? Did you say something to her?”
“We were kind of laughing and then she mentioned Al Pacino and that was it” Steve didn’t want to talk anymore. He has yet again failed to like a girl who returned his feelings.
“Al Pacino? She left because of Pacino?”
“She told me she didn’t like me.” he blurbed out.
Robin gasped. “Did you ask her out?”
“No.”
“So how do you know she doesn’t like you?” she exclaimed, throwing her arms in front of her.
“Robin, stop, just-“ he looked down, trying to hide his slightly watery eyes. “She basically said I’m just a pretty face to her. Nothing more.”
He doesn’t want to admit it, but it hurts him so bad. To not be seen above his looks. Everyone liked Steve. But no one really loved him for who he truly was. He didn’t want everyone to love him. Just you. And now-.
“That just can’t be true. Now I know you like her and if I think about it I noticed her sometimes looking at you. You know, with that hopeless look. There’s still hope, dingus!” Robin encouraged, putting her hands on Steve’s shoulders and shaking him.
“Stop! It’s no use. She doesn’t like me. I- I give up.”
Robin exhaled, seeing he was serious this time. She hugged him tightly. “Don’t.”
“I have to, Rob. It’s always the same story.” he said, going back to sorting movies, like the past ten minutes didn’t shatter his world.
You were an idiot. The greatest dumbass that set foot on this planet. You were walking away from Family Video and trying not to actively throw yourself in front of a car. In what world does anyone talk to their crush about how they’re watching a movie just to drool over an actor.
‘Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.’ you thought, squeezing your eyes.
Your every-other-day-visit to Family Video wasn’t just because you enjoyed movies and cinematography. It was also for who was working there. Steve Harrington has been lingering in your mind for what it feels like a lifetime. You didn’t really like him in high school, him being all popular and you were, well, normal.
But now, it was like he was a whole other person. Kind, funny and a bit of an idiot sometimes. And he protected those kids like they were his.
You started liking him a few weeks before the mall fire. Before you got dragged into what Hawkins really is.
And you didn’t just like him. You noticed the small things he does. How he frowned every time someone wanted to rent a military movie (he hated them for a reason you thought you knew). How he rolls his eyes when Dustin said something smart but in reality you knew he was actually amazed and proud of him. You were starting to hopelessly fall in love with this Steve. And that wasn’t good, because you weren’t gonna confess your feelings. You embarrassed yourself enough on your own, you didn’t need the humiliation that came with Steve’s rejection. Which, again, wasn’t good, considering it was eating you alive.
You didn’t tell anyone. And you did a pretty good job at hiding it. Especially today, when you basically told him you were in love with freaking Al Pacino and sprinted out of Family Video. Dumbass.
You were gonna get over it. Either that or you had to tell him.
Three months passed. Three. And now you were unfortunately madly in love with Steve Harrington. Three more months of complete misery. And now, your occasional bantering was almost gone. He was still friendly, but something shifted in his behaviour. Some days he was more distant. He sometimes acted like you got a restraining order against him. Which was infuriating, because if you could, you would get the opposite of a restraining order. You wanted him as close as possible to you.
You tried to distract yourself. You were closer to Max, but she was still grieving and you could see she was about to enter a bad phase of it. You tried everything to help her, but she pushed you away.
Steve Harrington was fine, according to, well, everyone. He was doing a great job at Family Video, expanding his taste with every movie Robin forced him to watch. His life was better. A couple of girls that seemed to be out of town even flirted with him, but he just smiled and guided them to the movies they asked for. He kept the promise he made to himself. Or so Dustin and Robin thought.
In this situation, Dustin was the most weirded out. Steve, who was constantly rambling about how he wants a girlfriend, was not even pronouncing the “g” or the “l” words. It was odd. He bugged him about the reason he stopped talking about it, but it was like Steve was sworn to secrecy, which at first annoyed the hell out of Dustin. Eventually he gave up.
According to himself, Steve was not well. For the past three months he managed to keep a facade of “I’m content with my current situation” and “No, Dustin, I don’t want a girlfriend, stop asking.” But he was in agony. His feelings for you flooded his mind even more now. It was like knowing that he can’t have you fueled his longing.
Some days were better than others. He liked to believe the days when he didn’t see you were better. But no, he spent that time thinking about you. Dustin was right, he was pathetic. Pathetic for still waiting for you after all this time. And he still wasn’t sure what he was waiting for.
He never mentioned you to Robin again, only in a casual conversation. She tried to talk with Steve about you, but every time he shrugged it off and said he got over it. But Robin wasn’t buying any of it. Steve wouldn’t hear any of it.
“I see the way you still look at her, dingus. Just admit it. You can’t just throw her the same sad puppy eyes. Do something!” she tried to convince Steve. Robin was done with his “I’m in love with you” screaming eyes every time you were in his eyesight. She could not understand how you were so oblivious.
“I’m over her, Robin” Steve says every time. He wasn’t even believing himself. How could he, when every time you walked into a room his days was instantly better.
Robin ended every failed discussion about you with “time will heal it” (another thing her mother apparently says).
Time didn’t fucking heal anything.
Robin invited you to a party. Robin. You didn’t believe this day would come. But there you were. You haven’t been to a party since Halloween. And you could use one right now, to get… nevermind who out of your mind. At least for a few hours. Robin said to be ready at seven in front of your house. You guessed you two will walk to the party, considering she didn’t have a license and you were planning on drinking.
To your surprise, a burgundy BMW pulled up in front of your house at 7:03 and your stomach turned upside down. You instantly recognised the car. Robin rolled down the window in the back, which was weird, because she wasn’t in her usual spot in the passenger seat. You looked at the driver seat. Steve was already looking at you, with a strange expression on his face. Shit. Shit.
“Hey there! Hop on.” Robin said, tilting her head towards the passenger seat. You ignored her cue and started to open the door in the back. “Actually, would you mind sitting in the front seat? I have a cramp in my calf and I want to stretch my legs.” she said smiling.
“Oh, okay” you agreed. And sighed. Great. Now you were stuck next to him. You opened the door and sat down. “Hi, Steve. Didn’t know you were coming.”
“Yeah, I made up my mind earlier.”
“He actually said he needed a ‘distraction’ from whatever problems he has.” Robin announced with a knowing smile.
“I’m right here, you know.” Steve frowned and you smiled. He was so close to you. Closer than he’s ever been in the past three months.
Steve Harrington was done for. First, Robin basically dragged him to this party, as he said yes 20 minutes ago. She didn’t lie, he needed a break from his thoughts. And 5 minutes ago Robin told him they had to pick someone up. When she said your name, Steve almost stopped the car.
“I thought it wasn’t gonna be a problem because, you know, you got over her. Unless…” Robin raised an eyebrow. Steve swallowed hard, trying to keep his expression blank.
“No, it’s fine. We can pick her up.”
Now you were next to him and a weird silence settled. Steve glanced at you. You were wearing blue eyeshadow on your eyelids and dark brown eyeshadow around your eyes. This combination suited you so well that he couldn’t get his eyes off you.
“Watch out!” you yelled, suddenly turning to Steve. An old man was crossing the road. Steve hit the break at the right time and the car stopped three feet away from the man. Steve’s breathing was fast and his face pale.
“Shit” he blurbed out Seeing the man approaching, you opened the window. When the old man was right next to the car, Steve started: “I am so sorry, sir, I didn’t see you at first.” His breathing hitched, like waiting for him to start yelling. He smiled instead.
“No trouble, young man. I remember how it’s like having a beautiful lady next to me. I wouldn’t look at the road either!” he said with a goofy smile. “Good day” and left.
Just like that, the whole car was speechless. Steve was stunned. The man saw right through him. You made eye contact for a moment, but it was enough to make your cheeks turn pink.
In the back, Robin snorted. “That went way better than I expected.” she chuckled.
“Yeah, it really did” you grinned, looking at her, then at Steve, with whom you shared your gaze more than usual.
The rest of the ride was spent in silence. Steve parked a minute away from the party house. It was already packed with drunk teens inside.
You looked around for the drinks. On your way there, you started thinking. You could not keep going like this. It was ruining your life. This party was supposed to be a refuge from your feelings. But now that silly, handsome boy you were stupidly in love with was here. Tonight, you had to treat Steve like a normal friend. Like a totally ordinary person.
The plan sounded easy to follow in your head. But in reality it was going to be the hardest thing you did. And you survived a crazy monster an a fire. You had to go through with this.
You grabbed a cup and drank. It was disgusting, having no idea what was inside, but it had to do its job.
Steve eventually figured out that Robin “accidentally” forget to mention you were coming to the party too because she wanted to get you together in the same place. Robin must think she was smooth with executing her plan. While you were gone getting drinks, he confronted her about it.
“So what? When are you going to be a man and admit that you are head over heels for her!”
“I don’t have- Ouch! The hell, Robin!” he yelped. Robin was slapping and punching his shoulders.
“I am going to keep slapping you until you admit it.”
“Okay enough! You won. I still like her. Happy?” he crossed his arms.
“Very. So do something about it. Tonight’s the perfect time!” She smirked.
Steve sighed. “She’ll say no.”
“Hm, don’t think so. When the old man made that comment, her cheeks were as red as your car. And no, she wasn’t just embarrassed. She likes you, dumbass. Talk to her. Or at least find her.” Robin said and disappeared into the crowd.
Steve was left alone and Robin's encouragement worked. Was there really a chance that you felt the same way?
You walked around the party. Trying to find Robin. And your Friend, with capital “f”, Steve. You only found Robin. “Where’s Steve?”
“Oh, he went after you. You didn’t meet him?” she asked confused.
“No.” Were you supposed to meet him? For a moment, your heart beat faster, but you calmed yourself down. It was probably nothing. Like always.
“Oh, well he’ll probably find us. Let’s…” she started looking around. This place, with all the drunk teenagers and tight spaces wasn’t where one would usually find Robin. “Let’s have fun!” she encouraged you, like she figured out you weren’t yourself today. Robin held out her hand.
“Yeah. Fun.” you said, amused by Robin’s different behaviour and grabbed her hand.
If moving your limbs in four different directions was considered dancing, then you and Robin were experts. Robin ran to the bathroom and you were left alone for a few minutes. Looking around, you accidentally made eye contact with a guy because he kept staring at you. And now he was stepping towards you.
“Hi. I’m Luke.” he introduced himself.
“Yeah, I know. We were in the same year.” You tried not to be rude, but you were’t in the mood to talk to a random drunk guy that stared at you like you were a slice of meat.
“So, you remember me.” he said with arrogance. “I always thought you were beautiful.”
“Thanks.” You saw he tried to be charming, but his breath reeked of alcohol and he was stumbling over his words. He could be a temporary way of forgetting Steve. You shook your head, not believing you were considering making out with a stranger to forget Steve.
“I have a drink here. We could share it.” he said, putting his hand on the wall above your shoulder.
You cringed. “Sorry, I need some fresh air.” You used the classic line of politely getting rid of unwanted attention, hoping he would get the meaning.
“Would you mind if I came with you?” he asked, leaning closer to you.
You bent down and passed under his arm, evading his too close presence. “Actually, yes. I’m going alone.” You left, without another word. Now outside, you felt the cold air against your face. You breathed it in, but a hand clasped your arm.
“You don’t have to be so rude now. I was just trying to be nice.” You recognised Luke’s voice. The asshole followed you.
“Let me go.” you hissed.
“Don’t get so frustrated now, baby. Relax.” He still gripped your arm.
Before you hit his arm, someone stepped in. “You heard her, asshole. Let her go.”
“Harrington. No need to get mad. I was just talking to this beautiful girl here.”
“Yeah. And she what? rejected you the third time in two minutes. I would’ve gotten the idea by now. She’s not interested.” he began. His voice was cold. You rarely saw him like this. He came closer, now three feet away from you.
Luke felt his tone and let you go. Your arm hurt. “All yours, Harrington.” he said turning away.
Steve clenched his fist in anger. “You okay?” he checked, his face full of worry.
“Yeah. Thank you.”
He was furious. Furious that a guy disrespected you like that. “Pussies like him only listen to other men. Can’t take no from a girl.”
Luke must have heard it, because the next thing Steve felt was a fist into his nose. You gasped.
Steve regained his balance and dodged the next hit, catching Luke’s fist. He was going to hit him, start a fight, but then he caught your gaze. Your eyes were telling him to stop. And Steve did.
“Get out of here, man. You’re blackout drunk. I’m not fighting with you.” he said, pushing Luke towards the house.
Luke stumbled across the door and turned to Steve. “Steve Harrington, ladies and gents.” he announced, to the few people that were watching the scene. “The ever gentleman. You and your whore can go to hell.” he cursed and disappeared into the house.
Steve was livid with rage. He sprinted to the door, but you stopped him.
“He can’t say that about you!” he protested.
“It’s not worth it. Just another asshole.” you assured him, holding his hand. Electricity was coming up your arm, but you ignored it.
“But-“ He stopped, looking at your linked hands.
“No but. I think we should go. Before the guy starts anything else.” The corner of your mouth turned up. “Or you. Let’s go get Robin.”
You guided him into the house, still holding his hand. He wasn’t letting go. Weird. And neither were you. Robin was leaning against a wall, looking out of place. When she saw you, her face light up.
“We have to go!” you yelled over the music.
“Why? Are you not having fun?” she said while looking like the last person that was having fun. “And why does Steve have a bloody nose?” It took her a moment, but she realised. “Oh, that’s why we have to leave.”
Robin looked down at you still holding hands and she smiled. Her plan was working. Not that she really had one. She only knew the objective. You followed her gaze noticing Steve’s hand was still in yours. You let him go, feeling your cheeks burning.
“Alright, let’s go kids.” Robin smiled.
In the car, a weird silence settled. Steve started the car and Robin yelled: “I have an idea! Let’s have a movie night. At Steve’s place!”
“What?” you and Steve said at the same time.
“Yeah, it will be fun. Besides, we three haven’t hang out in a while. So…” she looked between you.
“Yeah, sure. Why not.” Steve decided, already knowing it was part of Robin’s plan. But he didn’t think about that at the moment. He didn’t want that Luke guy to ruin your night. Maybe they could fix it with a movie. After all, you loved movies.
Steve and Robin looked at you, waiting for your answer. “Yes. That would be great.” you accepted.
And so you were off to Steve Harrington’s house and your heart never beat faster.
At his house, Steve showed you to the living room. You browsed his collection and decided to watch an Indiana Jones movie.
Somehow, you were actually paying attention to the movie, considering everything that happened this evening.
On Steve’s part of the couch, things were different. All he could think of was that guy and his hands on you. Steve knew you could have probably handled yourself, but when he saw Luke couldn’t take a no, he exploded. Before you went outside, he watched you, trying to make up the courage to confess his feelings. But that asshole started talking to you and his plan was ruined.
But not completely. He still had time. The night wasn’t over. He couldn’t keep waisting every opportunity to talk to you over a stupid reason. Even if there was a high chance he’ll make a fool of himself, he had to try.
Steve looked over. You were absorbed in the action on the screen. He stood up. “I’ll be right back.” He needed to clear his head.
You were thirsty and there was no water around. “Robin, where’s the kitchen? I need a glass of water.”
Robin pointed in the direction of the room. “Want me to pause the movie?”
“No, I’ve seen it before. I’ll be back in a minute.”
You walked towards the kitchen, admiring Steve’s house. It was big but… empty. Steve mentioned that his parents were rarely in town. She felt so bad for him. It was like they abandoned him here.
When you opened the kitchen door, you saw not only glasses, but also Steve. You took a step back, but after a second you entered the room.
“Hey. I just need a glass of water.”
“Sure” He filled a glass. “How’s the movie?”
“The same as the last three times I saw it.”
“Yeah sorry about that. I have to update my collection.” he said, scratching the back of his head. Before you could say anything, a clump of blood started flowing from his nose. “Shit.” he cursed. “Not again. The idiot must have hit a vein.” He reached for a napkin, but you got there first.
“Wait, I’ll help. It’s the least I could do for taking a punch for me.” You said and wet the corner of a napkin and turned to him. He was taller than you, his eyes looking down to you. Your confidence was replaced with nervousness. You swallowed. “May I?”
“Yes. Of course.” Steve said, his eyes not leaving yours.
You cleaned the blood from his nose. Your movements were slow. Steve watched you closely. You were so close to him. So close that he was now drunk with your scent. “Tell her, tell her” a voice in his head (that sounder like Robin’s) urged him. He tried to ignore it, but his mind was dizzy. He could kiss you right there. The words flowed without his knowing:
“I can’t keep doing this” he breathed, realising he said it out loud.
“Doing what?” you lowered your hand, thinking you made him uncomfortable.
It was too late to back down now. “Lying to you. And to myself.”
You just blinked, not knowing what to say, but Steve still waited for a word from you. When you didn’t say anything, he continued.
“Lying to myself that I can stop thinking about you. I tried to do it. I really did. For a while I thought it worked, but my life was dull and blank. I tried to keep you in the back of my mind. Nothing made me excited anymore. But every damn time you came to Family Video my day was better. And I-I know you probably don’t feel the same, but I just-. God, I just had to tell you because you’re not even sitting in the back of my mind. You’re like fully in my brain, all the damn time. Actually, that sounded so weird, I’m so sorry” he paused, trying to rearrange his words. You were so stunned you couldn’t say anything.
“What I’m trying to say is all i do is dream of you and it’s driving me nuts. I know it’s a lot and it’s so much more than this. Even if I tell you everything I’m not sure you’ll know how much I'm in love with you.”
Your ears started ringing. Steve was now two feet away from you.
“How long?” you managed to ask.
“Almost five months” he looked down in shame. He was ready for rejection.
You paused before speaking. “Me too”
He raised his head confused. “What?”
“Five months.” You breathed. “I’ve liked you for five months. And ‘like’ is too weak. Why do you think I used to come to Family Video so often? Yeah, sure, for Robin too, but you were-.“ you stopped, raising your eyes and seeing him staring at you with his brown eyes. You took it as a sign to continue. “I tried to get to know you better. At one point I even tried to find some things I don’t like about you, but I gave up. Because the things I usually don’t like in others made me like you even more. Which doesn’t even make sense!” Your voice was now pitched, but you didn’t care. You had to get everything out. There was so much to say that nothing made sense anymore.
“I love your stupid jokes and your kindness. I love how you stand up for everyone and I love- you. I’ve been in love with you and it’s gotten so embarrassing for me because I just can’t move on. You turned my world upside down and I don’t know how to get back to normal.” You looked him deep into his eyes. “I don’t want to.”
You let out a breath you’ve been holding for the last five months. You breathed hard, like you ran a marathon. Tears were forming in your eyes and you tried to hide them. The emotions were too much, a light tear now landing on your right cheek. You raised the back of your hand to wipe it, but you felt another hand brushing your cheek. His other hand grabbed your left cheek. Steve opened his mouth to say something, but he changed his mind and slammed his lips on yours.
The sudden contact took your breath away for a moment. Steve must have noticed that, because he pulled away. He then saw in your eyes desire and confirmation, so he kissed you again, this time harder, hungrier. His lips were soft and you whimpered. Hearing that, Steve smiled into the kiss.
He was in heaven. You tasted like honey and strawberries and everything he’s ever dreamed of. His legs felt like jelly, but you were grounding him, keeping him in this world. Your hands in his hair sent shivers down his spine.
When the kiss ended, you grinned and Steve gazed upon your pink lips, already wishing for more. You hugged him, and he held you so tight, like he as if he answered your old prayer to be as close to him as possible.
“Should’ve done that a long time ago. I want to do this right with you without screwing up again.” He grabbed your hand. “Will you go on a date with me? Please?”
“Kiss before a first date? I’m going off the book here.” you grinned.
“So it’s a yes.” He had a cocky smile on his face.
You kissed his cheek, then his lips. “Of course it’s a yes.”

You started climbing up towards Eddie’s place after Robin. Your arms started to hurt, instantly regretting that you never took gym class seriously. When you passed the opening you felt gravity pulling you down.
“Whoa!” you yelped, falling on the mattress. You stood up, seeing Eddie climbing, but somehow you were still in the Upside Down. You looked around in horror, hearing a clock. You turned to your side and you saw it. Your hands started trembling, knowing who was coming.
Your surroundings shifted. You were in the woods and you could see a red storm coming. Bats flew above your head towards something. Or someone. You felt something pushing you there. Someone screamed your name. You recognised that voice in an instant. Eddie. He was in danger. You started running towards him. Your limbs felt like noodles, but your feet were burning with every step you took.
Something stopped you. In front of you, a few feet away, was Eddie, lying on the blood covered ground. You tried to run and help him, but when you looked down, vines were crawling around you, holding you in place.
“Eddie!” you screamed in terror.
He turned his head to you. Instead of his brown eyes were two bloody holes. His body was covered in dirt and blood.
“You let me die” he grunted, coughing blood. You could hear his voice everywhere. “You always leave. My blood is on your hands.”
“No, you’re not dead. This is not real”you cried.
The image changed. You were now standing above Eddie. His Hellfire shirt was soaked in blood and his chest was full with bite marks. Oh, God. You realised that the blood on the ground was his. The smell filled your nostrils. You kneeled next to his chest, trying to apply pressure on his wounds.
“Stay with me, Eddie!”you begged. “I love you, please!”
“You were too late” he said, giving his last breath.
“No!” you screamed. “I’m sorry, Eddie” you said, caressing his hair. A dark sensation came over you, one of death. You were going to die if you stayed here. You gathered all your strengths, taking one last look at Eddie. But when you stood up, everything changed.
Somehow, now you were at Starcourt. The lights were flickering. Everything was burning around you, and in the middle was Billy. His eyes were open, no hint of life. You started walking towards him with tears in your eyes.
“Billy!” you called, kneeling next to him. You touched his face. It was so cold.
But, suddenly, his eyes were open, full of hatred. You didn’t have time to react before Billy wrapped his hand around your throat. You gasped, trying to fight him.
“You left me. And look what happened.” he growled, crushing your throat.
“I’m sorry, it wasn’t my fault!” you cried. Your sight began to darken. “It wasn’t-”
“You did this. And now Max is alone.” Billy’s last words hit you right in the gut before you passed out.
When you opened your eyes, coughing and gasping for air, you were in Eddie’s trailer again.
“It’s okay. You’re okay.” said Eddie. “Breathe.” He hugged you and you clung to him like he was the only thing keeping you in this world. Eddie’s whole body was trembling. He thought you were going to die in front of him.
“Eddie. You’re okay. You’re safe” you whispered, checking his chest for bite marks. You cupped his face with your hands. Looking in his eyes, you remembered what you said to that dying Eddie. ‘I love you’.
Eddie could tell something bat happened, but he didn’t want to pressure you. At least not yet.
“And I saw Billy.” Max instantly looked at you.
After Nancy shared her encounter with Vecna, it was your turn to tell your story. ”Billy? Like Hargrove Billy?” asked Eddie confused. You nodded. “Why?” You started toying with your ring. ”I-um- we went on a couple of dates last summer.” you said with a lump in your throat. Eddie’s eyes widened for a moment. “But we were never a thing.” You continued quickly. ”I didn’t know that” said Dustin. “You never told us. Did you know about this?” he asked, eyeing Max and Steve. ”Yeah, we knew. Now shut up about it.” Max grunted, sending piercing arrows at him. ”I just can’t imagine you and Billy. You’re so nice and he-” Dustin stopped and slightly looked at Max, realising he shouldn’t say more.
“Dude, now is not the time” Steve chimed in. ”It’s fine, Dustin, I know he was an asshole.” Max tried to look unbothered, but you knew better. ”He was actually nice to me. But his attitude changed too often. I tried to deal with it and then… you know… the fire happened.” she explained avoiding Max’s eyes. Eddie tensed next to her and started tapping his fingers on his knee. Like he did when he was annoyed or angry.
“So Vecna didn’t show you anything about the end of the world?” Nancy asked. You could see the terror in her eyes. It would stick with her for a long time, just like with you.
“No. I guess he was… busy with you and he sent those visions to me.” you shrugged.
“So you really dated Billy?” Dustin whispered so Max wouldn’t hear. He couldn’t help it, especially when he seemed the only one who didn’t know. ”Yeah, but like I said, just a few dates.”
“Dustin…” Eddie scolded him. Dustin put his hands in the air and started to get up, but you stopped him.
“It’s okay, Eddie. It’s not much to tell anyway. Plus, I want you to know too.” you told him. Eddie nodded. It was a surprise for him as much it was for Dustin that you and Billy went out. He wasn’t mad. Just… confused why you kept that from him. “He didn’t do anything to you, did he? I used to see him at school acting all cocky, like he owned the damn place. With a different girl almost every week.” ”I know Eddie, I-” ”What I don’t understand is what did he have? I know you’re not one of those girls that just wanted to get in his pants.” Silence followed while you tried to gather your words.
“I moved here last summer and I didn’t know anyone. Than I started working at that store at Starcourt and he used to come there to look at records. Every time he was there he talked to me. And I-“ you stopped, knowing how pathetic you’ll sound. “I couldn’t believe that he would even look my way. You know that I was- I am awkward, and I suck at small talk, so dating around was off the charts for me. I knew he was cocky and arrogant, but one day he asked me on a date and I said yes. He took me to a bar and we talked. He was nice. We had some stuff in common.”
Memories came. Of Billy. The ones you tried to forget. How he would come in the record store too often. And how he talked to you every time. Eddie called your name, waving a hand in front of your face.
“Yeah, sorry. I was just thinking.”
“God you scared me. Thought you were in a Vecna trance again.” Eddie remembered Chrissy. Ever since he knew you heard the clock he keeps seeing you like her. Bloody eyes. Bones snapping. Every time he closed his eyes. Even when they were open. The horror of losing you…
“Anyway, there was a party last summer” you continued. “He acted like he didn’t know me for the most of it. Than Billy apologised and he asked me out again as sorry and I was stupid enough to accept. By that time I realised he wasn’t the best guy. He went form angry to romantic too quickly and I decided to end it. That was one week before he got possessed, I think.“ You rubbed your face with a palm. “I don’t know but sometimes I think I was too harsh on him. Or like I abandoned him. I knew from Max thay had problems at home. Maybe if I stayed he wouldn’t have-” small tears started filling your eyes.
“Hey, don’t say that. It’s not your fault.” said Eddie, touching your knee. Dustin nodded at his words.
“Yeah well, my brain and Vecna seem to think that it is.”
Dustin left to talk with Lucas and Steve. Everyone stayed quiet for a while, trying to think what was the next step of the plan.
You could feel Eddie wanted to say something else, but you needed a break to clear your head. You got up and went. A part of you wished he would follow, but he couldn’t go outside. Someone could see him. You sat behind the trailer and inhaled deeply. You were safe now. Vecna wasn’t here.
After a minute you could hear steps coming.
“Eddie, you can’t be here! Someone will see you.” you exclaimed. Eddie sat next to you, completely ignoring your words.
“I don’t care. You need someone right now.” he urged. He had a sweet smile on his face, and you couldn’t help but smile back. What was this boy doing to you. You remembered again: ‘I love you’. You have to tell him this, before it was too late. Maybe it already was. Instead, you rested your head on his shoulder. Eddie smiled at the contact.
You stayed like that for a few minutes. Eddie turned his head to you, like he wanted to say something, but decided against it.
“It’s okay. You can ask me.” you said. He looked at the ground, sighing.
“All this time you’ve blamed yourself. You could’ve told me. I could’ve helped you.” he said.
“Eddie…’ you murmured. You raised your head from his shoulder.
“You never told me.” he repeated. “All this time I didn’t know you were hurting this much.”
“I don’t like to talk about it.” you said, avoiding his eyes. It was hard. Especially now, when Max was in danger. You couldn’t bear losing her too. “We should go to the others.” you said getting up.
“Hey, don’t do that. Not now. Don’t shut me out again. You always do that.” He takes a step towards you. “I’m just trying to be here for you. But you won’t let me. Can’t you see that I-“ he stopped, realising what he was about to say. Eddie took a deep breath and looked at you. You looked tired. Like the weight of the world was on your shoulders. “Please just talk to me.” he begged.
“And what do you want me to say? Huh?” You said, walking in front of him. “That i feel like a fucking shit because I left him when he needed a friend the most? That I feel like I’m doing the same with you?” you said with hot tears in your eyes, walking in front of him. “I saw you die, Eddie. I saw you dying and I couldn’t stop it. We were in the Upside Down and those goddamned birds or bats were ripping your skin. I couldn’t tell the others.” Days, even weeks of hidden feelings came out. “Ever since I met you, I stopped thinking about Billy so often. I don’t know what you did, but it was like you cured me. And than I was so scared of losing you that I didn’t even realise I was the one driving you away. I didn’t want to hurt again.”
“But you hurt me. You kept pushing me away. You still do.” Eddie barked. He could’t help it. He knew he shouldn’t be so angry. It pained him that you still don’t know everything he feels right now. He rubbed his face, sighing. He had to tell you. After all this time, after all he kept inside, everything felt like agony.
“I didn’t know what to do when someone stayed.” you cried. You looked at his lips, than into his eyes again. They were saying something words weren’t enough for. “And you did.”
“Of course I did! I’m in love with you!” his voice was weak, but still angry. Can’t you see that?” Now that he finally said it, he couldn’t stop. “I’ve wanted you from the first time I saw you. I can’t pretend anymore that you aren’t all I think about. You are everything to me. Everything.”
Your ears started ringing and you thought you imagined everything he confessed. Your breathing was heavy. Before you could say anything, he took a step closer to you and crushed his lips against yours, cupping your cheeks. Neither of you moved. He pulled away for a moment. You looked at each other. Then you leaned in at the same time, devouring each other. The kiss was messy, full of longing. You threw your hands around his neck, pulling him closer. Eddie’s hand was clinging around your waist. Your lips moves with desire. You let out a small moan, after which you felt Eddie smile into the kiss. When you broke the kiss, you already wanted more. He rested his forehead against yours.
“Say something” he begged. His cheeks were pink, the same shade as his lips.
“I’m so sorry, Eddie, for not telling you earlier. I’m so, so very in love with you.” You traced his jaw with your fingers and he leaned into your touch. “It’s always been you.” you said, kissing him again. This time it was gentle, a reassurance that this was real.
Eddie looked at you. You were perfect, he thought. Cheeks flushed. Lips a bit swollen from kissing.
“You’re so beautiful. I can’t believe I managed to get you.” he grinned.
You blushed even more, if that was possible “Shut up” you giggled and pecked his lips.
“Dustin’s gonna walking on air when he hears about this.”
“What?”
“He’s been bugging me to tell you this. He Was sure you felt the same.”
“Well, thank God you finally listened to him”
“God, we’re idiots.” you giggled.
“I know. I should’ve done that a long time ago” Eddie said, smiling gently and kissing your cheek.
You stayed in each other's arms for a few more moments before deciding it was time to head inside, walking hand in hand.
“You deserve everything, Eddie. I’ll do my best to be that.” you said standing nest to the door.
“You’re already enough.” he smiled and opened it.
Everyone looked at you. They had a knowing look. You looked at Eddie and realised they probably heard a lot of your yelling from earlier. You looked back at Eddie, then at everyone and you both smiled. Dustin was grinning from ear to ear.
“Finally” Steve mumbled.

Starry Night
eddie munson x reader
after an attempt to have fun at a valentine's day party, you found yourself in the backyard, talking with another misfit- Eddie Munson
2.1k: fluff, shy reader, yearning, mutual pining, meet cute
a/n: this is my first fic here also you know the deal english isn’t my first language hope you'll like it <3
The house was crowded. Too crowded. And loud. Which was normal, considering you were at a party.
You walked to the backyard, that was surprisingly empty. Everyone was probably puking, sleeping or making out. You’ll hear on Monday at school the things everyone did. Who hooked up with who. Maybe some couples broke up this night. But it was too soon to think about Monday. You could already feel the morning headache, like someone was inside your skull knocking very hard. You needed to sit down.
Not wanting to go back into the house or sit on the ground, you head to the swing by the fence. You tried to walk in a straight line while sipping on the bottle of water you had. Getting closer to the swings, you saw there was someone already there. As you were still walking and squinting, trying to see who it was, you slammed your leg into something solid.
“Fuck!” you cursed when your leg started throbbing with pain. “Who the hell has a big rock in the middle of their backyard!” you grunted angrily to yourself. You passed the rock and heard a low chuckle coming from the swings.
“I asked myself the same thing” the same voice said. “That’s why I thought you already saw it and I didn’t have to warn you about it.” he said. You looked at him. He wore a denim jacked, a Black Sabbath shirt and ripped jeans. You glanced at the beer in his hand, but more at the rings he wore.
“Why, are you like the keeper of the stone, waiting creepily in the dark to warn people?” You entered his game and he grinned.
“Yes, that’s exactly why I’m here.”
“Well, you failed and I nearly broke my leg.” You were now standing in front of the empty swing, contemplating if you should sit or not.
“I am so sorry” he said and touched his heart with a palm theatrically, bowing his head. “What can I do to redeem my mistake, my lady?”
“My lady? You flatter me.” His curious eyes were on you, waiting for a response. “Hmm” you tried to look pensive. “Maybe you can let me sit on the empty swing.” you offered.
“Of course.” he nodded.
You sat down. Your head stopped hurting. Silence followed, but it wasn’t awkward. It felt peaceful. Like you were sitting with someone you knew for a lifetime. You could hear the music and people cheering inside the house. The night was so clear. You looked at the stars, hoping for a few moments you’ll catch a falling star. You turned your head back to the boy, finding him already looking at you. He quickly looked at the sky.
“I know you. You’re Eddie.” You had some classes with him. He sat a few seats from you in maths and history. You noticed him every day, always doing his thing. Drawing, scribbling words on scrapped paper, never paying attention in class. He was interesting to you, a puzzle you were too shy to solve. Sometimes, you caught him looking at you during class. Or during lunch, when your eyes found each other over the sea of people, too often to be by mistake.
He tilted his head, his eyes on you again, almost like not believing you said his name. “I hope you don’t know it for the wrong reasons.”
“No” you claimed. “We share a few classes. You asked me once for a pen.” You squinted at him and raised an eyebrow, shifting your face to a fake serious expression. “You never gave it back to me.”
Eddie looked caught in a trap, but when you smiled he started laughing.
“I swear it’s somewhere safe, in my room. I’ll look for it and give it to you in maths class.” he offered
“Nah, you can keep it. I don’t even remember what it looks like.”
Another silence falls over you, but this time it felt different. Like you both wanted to say something, but didn’t know how. You opened your mouth, but he already started speaking.
“Can I be honest with you? I didn’t think you were gonna sit here.” he confessed.
“What?” you blinked.
Eddie shrugged. “You know, I’m at the bottom of the food chain. And you’re…” He stopped “You’re you.”
You tilted your head, confused. “What does that mean?” You were a bit stunned by the fact that he paid enough attention to you to notice that.
His eyes widened, thinking he offended you. “Sorry, I meant people like you and you’re smart. High school treats you well.” He looks at you holding his breath, thinking he ruined the moment.
You laugh and he exhales relieved. “Is that what you think of me? People sometimes talk to me during class because they want to know what homework we had. Or, you know, they ask for a pen” You smirked and he puffed. You leaned on the chain “But I don’t really have friends. Just Robin. And sometimes Nancy. I guess people don’t like me enough to want to be my friend.”
You couldn’t believe how fast you just told him one of your biggest insecurities. That you’re not interesting enough to be approached. It was something about him. Like if you could pour your entire heart for him. Maybe it was the alcohol in your veins.
“I told you that because when people talk I sometimes hear your name and they say nice things about you, that’s all.” he said and took a sip of beer. He offered you the bottle and you took it. Your fingers brushed for a second, sending a strange feeling to your stomach. You couldn’t believe you were here, sharing a beer with Eddie Munson.
“Sounds like you’re watching me.” you teased. He looked caught again.
“I’m not doing it in a creepy way, I just-” He said quickly, trying to explain himself but failed.
You smiled “It’s okay, I-” You felt embarrassed for what you’re about to say. “Sometimes I watch you too. Like you said, people talk and I always thought there’s more to you than what they say.” Eddie looked at you, studying your face, like he was trying to see more than what you let on. “You know, I didn’t peg you for someone to come to a Valentine’s Day party. Don’t think you’ll find Black Sabbath playing here.” you said, pointing at his shirt.
He nodded and shrugged. “I’m here for the free booze. I don’t mind hanging out in the backyard. Last month, I switched the tape that was playing with one of mines. At first no one noticed, but then that guy Trevor came and tossed it.”
“That was you? Those were two minutes of the party. What was it? ‘Heaven and hell’?” You remembered Trevor’s party. All you heard for three hours was Madonna. You were groaning every time a new song started.
Eddie stared at you in disbelief. “You listen to Black Sabbath?”
“Yeah. I have a pin with them on my backpack. I guess you’re not watching me too closely.” I smiled.
He placed a hand on his chest. “I promise I’ll watch you even more from now on.” He said with a wide smile on his face. “What else?”
“Bowie, Beatles, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue. I saw Metallica with my dad.” You looked at Eddie. He looked like he was zoning out. “Eddie?”
“Sorry, did you just say you saw Metallica? I feel honoured to be in your presence.”
“You’re really dramatic, you know that?” You rolled your eyes. “My dad has a camera. He took some photos. I can show you if you want.” you offered. You couldn’t help but smile at him. He looked like a kid on Christmas morning.
“That would be so cool man.” When he looked at you, you could feel something shifted between you. “You’re way cooler than I thought. I was actually watching you bec-” He looked shy. “Because I wanted to talk to you.”
“To ask me for another pen?” you teased him. You both laugh, but you couldn’t hide that his words flustered you. “I wanted to talk to you too. Guess I thought you’re a bit scary. I didn’t know anything about you. I mean, the real you” you said trying to look him in the eyes. When you did, even in the dim light, you noticed how brown they were. And how they almost seemed like they were looking for something hidden in yours. For a few moments neither of you dared to move. You could hear ‘I’m not in love’ faintly playing from the house. You felt something strange in your stomach again. Embarrassed, you cough, trying to get rid of the flush in your cheeks.
You kept talking, jumping easily from a topic to another. Movies, books, movies. You found out you shared a Lord of the Rings obsession. Sometimes, when he talked, he gestured, and you couldn’t help but stare at his hands and rings.
“You should come to a d&d meeting. I know you’ve probably heard a lot of bad stuff, but I promise you we’re not summoning demons. I can teach you how to play, if you want.” he looked at you with anticipation.
“I’d like that.” you nodded. “Find me at school next week.”
“Perfect!” Eddie smiled wide, his heart racing. He finally did it. After months of stolen glances and trying to make up the courage to talk to you, somehow you stumbled into him and somehow stayed.
Eddie drove you home. When he pulled up in front of your house, you didn’t move. Tension built up during the drive. You didn’t want to leave, to end this night. You looked at him.
“Thanks for the ride. And for tonight. You saved me from that party.” you fidget. “I’m glad I didn’t listen to those jerks. You’re really cool.”
“You’re really cool too.” he smiled gently. He wanted more time with you. The burden of everything he wanted to say to you was crushing and it put him in a short state of misery.
Going through the same storm of feelings and being too nervous to say anything, you turned to the car door to leave. As you touched the handle, you got a sudden rush of adrenaline and turned to him. At the same time, he started speaking:
“Wait, do you wan-” You stopped him with a kiss on his cheek. Eddie stopped, looking at you with those wide, brown eyes that drove you insane all night. You started to feel embarrassed that you interrupted him, but his cheeks were now a light colour of pink. He blinked and lightly touched his cheek with his fingers. He was aware that he was acting like an idiot the whole night every time you looked or touched him, but this was on a whole other level.
“Sorry, I-” you turned, scared that you ruined the night.
“No, don’t be.” he said, still flustered. He wanted to kiss you right then and it took everything not to. “I was wandering if you want to go to watch the new movie. With me. There’s a screening at six. I wanted to go alone, but I think you’ll like it.” he asked quickly, his hands shaking a bit. “I can pick you up.”
His question took you by surprise. You smiled. “Yeah, I’d really like that.” Butterflies flooded your stomach. “Do you have a pen?”
“What? Yeah somewhere” He started searching through the cup holder. You looked too. It was filled with bottle caps, guitar picks, folded paper, a few cigarettes and a pen. He handed it to you, confused.
You took his hand and scribbled your phone number. “Call me before you leave your house.”
You didn’t need to give him your number. Not really. But you wanted him to have it. You were still holding his hand as he stared at it. Eddie closed his palm around yours. He brought it up to his lips and kissed your knuckles. Your cheeks had to be a deep shade of pink, as you could feel them burning. His lips were soft against the back of your hand. You already missed his touch when he let go of your hand.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said.
“Yeah, see you.” The cold February air brushed your face, cooling it. Damn, you were sure looking like a tomato. You circled Eddie’s van, heading to the door. Before you unlocked it, You turned your head to his window. Eddie was already watching you, smiling. You smiled too and opened the car door and he started the engine.
Now in your bed, you could still feel the shadow of Eddie’s lips on your knuckles.
When Eddie pulled up in the trailer park and opened the door, he touched again the cheek you kissed earlier. Damn. You got him wrapped around your finger in one night. He was in big trouble.
