Some great pieces of #IndianStone in today’s #FreshStockTuesday - including a handy dated example, presented in 1913 - an interesting date as the restoration of the greatest example of this art form, the #TajMahal, was only finished in 1908, and it was becoming a tourist attraction - it stands to reason that there were plenty of craftsmen around to produce these little souvenirs for the visitors. A rarity for our Exhibition this Saturday, can you guess its function? Porcelain , about palm-sized, beautifully painted with flowers and with a small hole to one side and large opening at the top: It’s a Posy Holder! The holes allowed the posy to be secured with a pin. Probably made for a wedding, it bears the initials ‘KS’ to one side and a tiny date the other - October 13th 1847. Unmarked, probably Minton, and definitely Rare! An unusual 18th century porcelain sauceboat in our upcoming exhibition..... at first glance , it seems to be English - Bow made similar - but there’s a string of odd features.... turns out to be a Chinese rip-off, the Bow examples circa 1760, this Chinese version circa 1765! Some lovely stonewares just catalogued for our upcoming exhibition, these have a complete surprise attribution- based on the mark on one, we can link the other 2 to the same maker: once known as the ‘Chrysanthemum Group’ due to their pretty flower mark on the base, which has recently been identified as Charles Bourne, a Staffordshire porcelain maker of the 1820’s more usually seen making Coalport-like pretty flower-painted pieces often with lots of gold on a deep blue ground. A very charismatic faun playing his flute.... Original French Rococo from the 1750’s, he is beautifully made from bronze which has been covered with a layer of gold - ‘Ormolu’ - and while this continued to be produced for the next few centuries, there is nothing quite like the original. He will be a part of our upcoming Annual Exhibition, opens October 5th in our Geelong premises. Rare pair of #Meissen vases, unusually impressed with the date 1876 and made for the Meissen retailer in London, Litchfield . I find their similarity to #ChelseaDerby forms of the 1770’s interesting, perhaps this London based dealer used a more local design for his custom-ordered vases? The armorials are for the #McCarthy family , the reverse with monogram ‘J I Mc C’. Marked to each piece: crossed swords in underglaze blue to each body, and underneath impressed mark ‘L 1876’ also printed “Ausschliefslich angefertigt fur S. Litchfield in London” (Made exclusively for S. Litchfield in London). A Fast Woman: a female racing driver from the 1920's.... This fine quality Italian alabaster bust by #GiustoViti is remarkable in its subject; a female racing driver from the early 20th century. 🏎🏎. A dynamic piece that somehow communicates a feeling of the thrill of speed, the steering wheel and driving goggles adding to the drama of the moment. Who is she? One fabulous female racer was Maria Antonietta Avanzo, Italian, and active in racing in the 1920’s-30’s..... another that looked a lot like this was the French woman #HelléNice was a remarkable French driver of the 1930’s. She was a dancer, a model... and a racing car driver! She drove fast cars, and had a fast life.... whoever she is, we’re loving having her as our latest addition to our stock at Moorabool. Introducing.... ‘Rococo Vase Of Flowers’ pattern by T&J Carey, c. 1835, marked with the mysterious ‘SAXON CHINA’ mark. Don’t try and find it in the books as it has never been connected- or published- before, but we have linked a distinct dish shape with another service sold in London in 2014- and can put the two together to make an interesting overview of a little-understood Staffordshire pottery & their products. Their father John had been a potter in the earlier 19th Century, and Thomas & John are probably his sons - they carried on the family tradition, running the ‘Anchor Works’ in Lane End, Fenton, from 1823-42. They made some quite attractive shapes, and the quality is good. We would love to hear from anyone else who has done any research.....? anyone? A tale of two desks, #Australiana at its best.... this first is Captain Cook’s desk, Indian Rosewood circa 1760: only knee-high, it apparently went on his voyages so he had somewhere to write his journals - but also includes a built-in backgammon drawer! I had heard about it, and so it was a thrill to see it in the flesh at the #australiannationallibrary #Canberra. The second desk is full size, and important as it is a drafting table designed & built for Walter Burley Griffin, the American architect who designed Canberra in the 1920’s.... on show at the #nationalgallerycanberra .
