Henrik had only decided to come to the party because he knew his siblings would be in attendance. And it would be a good way for him to see them, without getting too suspicious. He knew that sooner or later he would have to introduce himself to them, although he wasn't ready just yet, he didn't know what to expect and how they would welcome him. Or not welcome him. Henrik sipped on the drink in his hand, leaning against the wall on the background, lost in thought when someone approached him. "Having a good time? Or trying to get away from the crowd?" He asked.

damon  had  long  mastered  the  art  of  looking  like  he  was  part  of  the  party  while  simultaneously  wanting  absolutely  nothing  to  do  with  it  at  all.  yet,  of  all  the  people  he  could  find,  he  ended  up  drifting  toward  the  one  guy  standing  in  the  corner  looking  like  he  was  contemplating  the  meaning  of  life...  or  murder.  honestly,  in  mystic  falls,  either  was  equally  likely.  “little  bit  of  both?”  he  guessed,  unsure  what  brought  him  over  as  he  tipped  his  own  cup  in  acknowledgment.  “if  escaping  the  crowd  was  your  goal,  i  should  warn  you  i’ll  probably  make  that  significantly  harder:  i’m  usually  the  hit  at  all  parties.”

damon  had  gotten  bored  approximately  twenty  minutes  after  arriving,  which  was  a  new  record.  the  bad  thing  is  when  he  was  bored  the  line  of  good  decision  and  bad  decisions  blurred  into  something  fantastic  that  screamed  like  an  old  nike  commerical:  just  do  it!  he  was  standing  on  top  of  tyler  lockwood’s  kitchen  island  while  half  the  party  was  gathered  around  him  with  drinks  and  phones  in  hand.  “yolo...  isn’t  that  what  the  kids  still  say?” yeah,  maybe  in  2012  but  who  cares ??? with  absolutely  no  regard  for  common  sense  or  self  preservation,  he  launched  himself  from  the  island  and  caught  the  ceiling  fan’s  center  rod.  the  entire  fixture  jerked  around  violently,  but  spun  once  and  he  landed  on  the  opposite  counter  top. “i’d  rate  that  like  a  solid  ten  out  of  ten,  maybe  eleven.”

damon  dropped  from  the  counter  with  exaggerated  form,  arms  wide  before  he  bowed  like  he  was  accepting  applause  from  a  crowd  that  was  absolutely  over  it.  their  phones  are  already  lowering  and  people  were  moving  on  to  the  next  drinking  disaster.  his  brief  career  as  an  internet  sensation  was  cut  short  before  it  could  truly  begin.  oh,  well.  he  tracked  elijah’s  approach,  already  amused  because  if  there  was  one  thing  that  damon  salvatore  almost  enjoyed  as  much  as  being  center  of  attention,  it  was  irritating  an  original.  “if  i  recall,  you  seemed  pretty  impressed  by  my  acrobatics  once.”  his  grin  widend, taking  a  sip  of  his  alcohol  he  wasn’t  even  sure  was  at  this  point. “what  was  it?  four  years  and  276  hours  ago?  give  or  take.”  his  shoulders  lifted  in  an  innocent  shrug  that  fooled  absolutely  nobody.  he  knew  and  he  knew  elijah  did,  too.  “my  memory’s  a  little  fuzzy  and  you’re  fucking  old  but  i’m  fairly  certain  you  rated  that  performance  much  higher  than  a  four.”

“wait  —  if  you're  comparing  options,  i'd  recommend  gathering  more  evidence  first.”  the  joke  is  safe,  dumb  and  easy.  the  perfect  kind  of  thing  he’s  spent  centuries  perfecting.  go  forbid  damon  salvatore  be  caught  having  an  actual  emotion  when  a  poorly  timed  innuendo  could  do  the  job  instead.  he’d  learned  early  in  this  life  that  vulnerability  hurts  less  than  a  stake  straight  to  the  heart.  at  least  the  stake  gives  him  death,  the  other  gives  him  hope  and  that  in  his  case  has  always  been  far  more  cruel.

his  smile  falls  slowly  as  he  remembered  the  look  on  her  face  before  she’d  started  throwing  punches  back  and  suddenly  he  feels  a  little  ridiculous.  he’s  standing  here  making  dick  jokes  while  elena  is  very  clearly  upset.  “for  the  record,  distracting  you  with  inappropriate  comments  was  probably  plan  b.”  plan  a?  probably  ask  her  what’s  wrong,  but  that  involved  a  lot  of  emotional  effort  he  usually  didn’t  have.

finally  his  jaw  works,  swallowing  nothing  but  his  pride.  “are  you  okay?”  there  it  was.  no  performance,  just  three  words  that  felt  like  they  had  to  fight  their  way  through  six  layers  of  sarcasm  to  get  out.
