Modern Magic AU- Mordred
“A second chance doesn’t mean a happy ending. Sometimes, it’s a chance to end things right.” -Anonymous
It’s funny, because as far as we know, Mordred did very little wrong. He’s only in three episodes as a child (11 years old, if we say he’s the same age as Asa Butterfield was at the time):
In the first (1x08), he’s hunted, wounded, and dying, and does nothing wrong other than break a mirror when his father, who allowed himself to be captured to give Mordred a chance to escape, is executed.
In the second (2x03), he’s happy to see Morgana and wants to take care of her like she took care of him. Then Uther’s soldiers raid the camp to “rescue” Morgana, and Mordred defends himself. He’s surrounded by grown warriors who intend to kill him and everyone in the camp, and he reacts by throwing them all back with magic. They might have died, but they might have just been knocked out; it’s never confirmed either way. But he was a child reacting out of fear and for self-defense.
In the third (2x11), he’s being used by a sorcerer who wants to take advantage of his power and his connection to Morgana. Mordred does intentionally kill two guards—after all his allies are dead or captured, after he tries to escape by running for his life, and after Merlin trips him so he’ll be caught.
“I shall never forgive this, Emrys, and I shall never forget,” Mordred says to Merlin then.
Yet when we see him again in s5, he just proves himself wrong. Mordred puts all of his hope and trust in Merlin and Arthur, believing that they can bring the future he dreams of. But nothing changes, Merlin hates him, and Arthur executes Kara. Both of the people Mordred had so admired let him down.
Think about this: If Mordred is 11 when we first see him, and the series takes place over the course of a decade, he’s 21 at most, possibly as young as 18-19, when we see him in 5x01. By then, Merlin and Arthur are in their late 20s / early 30s.
Mordred—a heartbroken teenager betrayed by the people he looked up to, furious and disillusioned—turns to Morgana and violence. In anger and grief, he kills the man who killed the girl he loved and countless people like her.
It’s funny, because Mordred made mistakes and he hurt and killed people, but he was never malicious in any way. He was always scared, hopeful, and trusting.
But he struck the final blow against Arthur, so some people think Merlin should have killed him when he was a terrified child trying to survive.
(And by “funny,” I mean “fucked up.”)
#THAT WAS WHAT I WANTED TO POST ABOUT FUCK #in the end what mordred did was kill HIS OPPRESSOR #after being pushed away and mistreated for so long #and i hate to blame it on merlin again but everyone else embraced him like??? #aNYWAY #how do you look at show!mordred #and think about his portrayal in your fic #and you go ‘yes abusive (ex) boyfriend thats exactly who mordred would be’ #???? #i mean i keep asking how and why but its not like i dont know lmao (via @bimordred)
#I feel like the whole Kara thing was a set up #Like Merlin had nothing to do with Kara dying #MERLIN EVEN TOLD ARTHUR TO TRY AND GIVE HER A SECOND CHANCE #She chose death #It was her choice #And I get Merlin was a shit stain when it came to Mordred #he didn’t trust him at all in s5 #and in fact went very jealous boyfriend about it #But when it’s repeatedly slammed into your head by a dragon that is beyond old #that Mordred is there to kill Arthur #It’s hard to ignore #In a sense Merlin was brainwashed into thinking Mordred was bad #Repeat a lie so much it becomes the truth #The dragon insisted that Mordred was bad #That MORGANA was bad #Gaius didn’t help with Morgana either #there are so many things that Merlin was basically tricked into believing which caused everythign to happen #Morgana wanted help #Merlin would try to give it to her #and then snatch it away because of Gaius or the Dragon #Mordred wanted somebody to trust #Merlin never returned his trust as an adult #Arthur killed the girl he loved because she broke a law #and that’s despite the fact that he gave her a second chance at Merlin’s insistence #Which Mordred didn’t know about #THOUGH I REALLY WISH MERLIN HAD DONE HIS MIND READING BULLSHIT #AND CONNECTED IN WITH MORDRED AND LET HIM LISTEN TO HIS AND ARTHUR’S CONVERSATION ABOUT KARA #LET HIM LISTEN IN ON THE TRIAL #Mordred would have broke but I don’t think he would have ran to Morgana (via @panslantern)

Someone talk to me about autistic!Mordred.
Mordred who even when an adult sometimes goes nonverbal, and falls back to telapathy in order to communicate.
Hyperempathetic Mordred who wants everyone to be good and right. He hurts so much knowing that Emrys doesn’t trust him, and that he betrayed Morgana and Arthur.
Mordred getting overwhelmed by the business and number of people in Camelot, and needing to go to the forest where it’s quiet and reminds him of his childhood.
Mordred whose special interest is druidic legend, who could infodump for hours about all the stuff he knows but the only one he could talk to is Merlin and that would be weird.
Mordred who struggles with sarcasm which gives the knights an advantage when pranking him.
Mordred who relied on his cloak as comfort for most of his childhood, using the hood to shut out light when he gets sensory overload

bane
(n.) A cause of misery, fatal injury or ruin; a slayer or murderer, a worker of death.
Both diggingfordragons and a recent anon requested that I sketch Mordred! Some variety from me, yes, I hear ya! lol Ahh, Alexander Vlahos has a face every mother could love… Despite being “Arthur’s Bane” and all, he was way too adorable to hate! Even with his sword through Arthur, I thought he just needed a hug… T3T
