A Lokane fanfic idea that I’ve had for a while...
Jane’s family has been charged with guarding the Aether for generations. Her life in the village has been peaceful and her dad helps her grow her love of the stars. One day, When Jane was still a child, her village was attacked in an attempt to get it. Her family is killed while trying to defend it. She unintentionally absorbs it and runs away into an abandoned temple thing in the woods.
That temple is Loki’s. He is also a child and seems to be around her age. He decided to let her use his abandoned temple as her new home. He visits her very often. She becomes his secret friend and he also teaches her how to use some of her new found magic. (Teaching her is a great chance for him to show off and boost his ego) When he isn’t training in prince stuff on Asgard, he sneaks off to play with her.
This goes on for a while and Loki planned to sneak her a golden apple until a freak accident happens which being Jane to the brink of death. So Loki saves her with a mix of the golden apple and other magic which saved her from dying but also turned her into an owl.
Loki then takes Owl!Jane with him back to Asgard and saying that it’s his new pet. She discovers quickly that she can transform back into human form occasionally. When she is very fatigued or the Aether takes a big toll on her then she turns back into owl form. Loki shows her all his favorite parts of Asgard. She really loves spending time in the library and palace observatory.
One day, Thor and his friends see Jane in her human form so now Jane and Loki have to include them in on the secret. Thor is ecstatic to have another friend to join the group and promises to help keep her a secret. Jane is excited to make new friends while Loki is secretly a little bitter that Jane isn’t his secret anymore. (And maybe expects her to give more attention to Thor like everyone else does, which doesn’t happen) They all succeed in keeping this secret for a while.
(They tease her for being small in stature and bad at fighting but they try to teach a bit so she is at least “somewhat functional”. Though Jane didn’t understand why she needs to learn that stuff but accepts it as a part of the culture of her “new home”. She isn’t the best warrior by far but she does pick up some useful tricks and skills.)
Since the very beginning, Frigga sensed that something was up but didn’t step in since her precious son Loki seems to be happier. She kept an eye on all of this unfolding but let them “keep their secret” since no harm was being done and they all seemed happier. Then one day she confronts Jane alone. Jane is scared because A) she’s the queen and also B) she might get kicked off of Asgard or something worse. Frigga however had seen visions of the future and decided that keeping Jane in the castle and raising her with her sons was the best path.
So basically Jane is raised with the princes and it is all awesome. They do have to be a bit secretive since the king is against Midgardians but it’s not too difficult since he is always busy. Time passes and they grow up a lot(except Jane who didn’t grow too much lol). She did develop some crushes here and there (including a crush on Thor for a bit) but ends up falling in love with Loki.
They date for a while then the king find out what’s been going on in his castle for many years and in a rage orders guards to drag her out. (To kill her or something, I dont know I didn’t figure that out) She uses her magic and skills to get free and in fear, runs towards the bridge. She gets to the bridge but realizes she doesn’t know what to do from there. She turns back and the end of the bridge is blocked by guards. No matter how much the queen or the princes plea, the king doesn’t listen to them. She feels her magic boil in rage. “The king ruined all this. I’ve done nothing wrong but live.” Her magic shows itself and they’re spooked because it’s the Aether. In a fit of rage she swears revenge and runs down the bridge and disappears. They’re never able to find her.
She doesn’t actually plan on getting revenge, she just said that out of anger in the moment. She’s come to terms with her new reality, travels back to earth and lives there. (Moving around, keeping a low profile and stuff since she doesn’t age like normal humans do.)
Fast forward to the present. Though Jane does know some magic, she almost never uses it (unless absolutely necessary or she can’t control it for a moment). She instead chooses to use the “midgardian” parts of her. Mainly, her big brains™️. She uses only science, math and midgardian technology to try to develop a bridge to other worlds. By doing it the “human way” She wants to prove that midgardians aren’t “nothings” and to also give humans a chance to see what she already knows is out there.
Darcy and Erik know about her “owl thing” that happens to her and have come in handy to cover up for her. (“Jane? You just missed her! She just left. This? Oh, this is my pet owl.” )
Throughout this time. Jane and Loki have been able to make brief contact through dreams occasionally but nothing really long or trackable so Jane remains hidden.
Eventually, they reunite. How this happens? I dont know. My brain storm ended here.
