āPoems are nearer to prayers than to stories, but in poetry there is no one behind the language being prayed to. It is the language itself which has to hear and acknowledge [ā¦] In all poetry words are a presence before they are a means of communicationā
ā John Berger, And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos
every single time
Sometimes think I have felt everything Iām ever going to feel.
Her (2013) dir. Spike Jonze
james longenbach / wendy cope / jon kabat-zinn
āFind meaning. Distinguish melancholy from sadness. Go out for a walk. It doesnāt have to be a romantic walk in the park, spring at its most spectacular moment, flowers and smells and outstanding poetical imagery smoothly transferring you into another world. It doesnāt have to be a walk during which youāll have multiple life epiphanies and discover meanings no other brain ever managed to encounter. Do not be afraid of spending quality time by yourself. Find meaning or donāt find meaning but āstealā some time and give it freely and exclusively to your own self. Opt for privacy and solitude. That doesnāt make you antisocial or cause you to reject the rest of the world. But you need to breathe. And you need to be.ā
ā Albert Camus, from Notebooks, 1951-1959
Jenny Holzer, "Marquees," 1993 (from the collection of Don Shewey)
when youāre reading fanfiction and you get so involved in the story you start imagining different scenarios in that same universe and then itās fanfiction fanfiction
a rose and it's thorns
Types of fanfic summaries and what they mean
First paragraph of the actual fic: I judge the whole fic by the first words and I assume you do too so here it is
āJust a series or drabbles/headcanons/promptsā: Someday I want to write an incredible 200k fic but for now have fun going through all the chapters trying to figure out which one is the one you actually want to read
āWill X be able to find love before Y happens?ā And other questions: I read entirely too many YA novels
Quote from the actual fic: I watch entirely too many movie trailers
āBasically just an X fic with Y charactersā: I can probably write a good summary if I cared a little more
Song lyrics: I have no idea how summaries work and Iām trying to be like the people with poem quotes
Poem quotes: either the best thing youāve ever read or 13-year old English literature purple prose there is no in-between
Lol I canāt do summaries: Iām not entirely sure if I want you to read my fic
āWtf is thisā or other author questioning themselves: itās either porn or crack
Explicit rated fics: listen my man I know youāre not gonna really read the summary just read the tags and decide if my sin is the sin for you
Paragraph of tags and one line summary: ok listen I canāt do summaries but Iāve got this ok IVE GOT THIS
dictionary definition: fluff or angst here you go
Either a meme or a tumblr imagine your otp: I was bored and I had emotions about my ship you can have emotions about them too
Paragraph from the source the fic is from: Iāve basically written my headcanon and made it prettier
āIām so sorryā or āI cried while writing thisā : I was in a sad mood and I needed a healthy way to release these emotions so now y'all get to suffer
No summary: itās either porn or a small drabble and it all depends on the word count
Actual fic summary: *rocks back on old wheelchair* listen kid *smokes cigarette* Iāve seen and read a lot of things *blows smoke* and I know itās hard but thereās still hope in this world ok? *looks into the distance* also you might wanna read the tags because the chances of gore and/or character death being in my fic have gone from 0 to 75
Why did this face come back? To say goodbye?
unstoppable force (wanting to be the kindest version of myself) vs immovable object (all the anger and hatred I have inside myself)
Going to like + reblog this-
anne carson: simple moving poem about awkward dinners with not-quite-friends and the ennui that comes with realizing this mundane unhappiness is all adult life is sometimes
insane people on twitter: has she ever tried being happy? i like going to dinner with friends, whatās wrong with her? she can afford to go out to dinner, she shouldnāt complain. just be a cooler hang, skill issue. this isnāt my exact experience (i like my friends) therefore this poem is bad and unrelatable and pretentious. she canāt debone a fish? loser.

āI burned so long and so quiet, you must have wondered if I loved you back. I did, I did, I do.ā
