Sacred: The bible, Cross, Rosary, Crucifix

2. Separation: In Christianity in order to be saved one has to accept Christ as their lord and personal savior.

Liminality: Baptism is the next step after accepting Jesus Christ. Baptism is confession of faith in Christ; A cleansing or washing of the soul from sin; A death to sin and a new life in righteousness.

Reincorporation: Getting involved as an active member in church after getting reborn.

3. Yes Marx’s critique of religion is relevant to every event I attended. In bible study and in the Sunday service, the idea of going to heaven or hell was present.

4. In Christianity the bible and the cross are unique to this community. The bible represents a way to live life as it is the world of God. The cross symbolizes the holy trinity in a Christian life.

5. The power relationships that were present in my visit were between the pastor and the congregation. The pastor has control of the church, he commands how the service goes and who does what.

6. Religious faith persists in a complex interaction with the structures and processes of the modern world and that complexity has only intensified under the conditions of contemporary globalization.

2. I observed in my relations power is organized based on resources. My professors hold all of the power in our interactions. This power comes from the teachers knowledge of content and/or expertise as an educator. I do as the teacher says because I recognize that the teacher knows more than me. With my classmates generally there is no power among us unless someone has something valuable whether it’s information or something else. The same applies with my friends. My parents hold the most power in my life, they’re my caregivers and support me financially sometimes. Whenever I’m home they have the last say in most of my decisions.

3. There are no political negotiations that take place in my relationships

4. These power dynamics were established mostly based on resources, and age. The people that have power in my life were due to me needing a number amount of resources. I established the dynamic of power by offering my services to gain something I need.

6. The state is almost incorporated in everything I use. For example, they make sure the local roads are maintained, that we are kids are educated (public and high school, plus partial funding of universities), the water you drink is clean, the medical services are safe and effective, police are on the job 24/7. Behind the scenes there is regulation of banks, commerce, transportation, communications, buildings, water systems, almost everything I consume. The state is our main provider of the stuff we need in daily life, further enforcing their power over us.

This article explains Religion can give others power over you or over a community of people. For example, Islam historically has had a massive power over most individuals around the world. Religion historically has had much political & economic power. Religion & power historically have gone together Islam is good examples of this. Religion is in the business of selling you the meaning of life. Once you buy it, you'll be incorporated into the system of religious power.

Immigrant Interview

Hello, my name is Jonathan Brown. I’m an 42 year old male. I am a Jamaican immigrant, coming to America after spending 22 years in Jamaica. I decided to leave my country and move to America because of the vast opportunities here to make money for my family. I knew that in the early stages of coming here I would face many language and economic barriers. During my first year of living in America I noticed that they were many females that are the dominant figure in the household. In my country a women can become professionals, they are still expected to tend to domestic activities. Men are the providers and the dominant figure in the household. The expectations of my children is that they eventually go off to school and earn a degree. I came here because of the vast opportunities for my children to get a well rounded education. Me coming to this country and working my way up from the bottom was a struggle. My children won’t face the trials and tribulations of moving to a new country and working for everything you have. Their struggle and lives will be different mine. Being the second generation, my kids won’t appreciate everything they have in their lives and take things for granted.

Chapter 10 field work assignment Kinship map

The story that my family tree reveals is that we are quite a large family. The family tree also shows that marriages in our family last and produces many children from them. Two main people who have been cultivating this family is my mother and father on both sides of the family. my mother and father both keep both sides of the family very close to make one big family passing down cultures and ensuring values within each other. Looking at just the images of the two women, I felt that the meaning could suggest that the whiteness of the woman could represent cleanness and purity. I didn’t like the ad just because of this picture.

I don’t believe that race is real but when asked what my “race” is I indentify as a black person. I’m from America therefore I’m American. Both of my parents were immigrants. My ethnicity is Haitian and Jamaican

Holly Baker response

Holly Baker was a anthropologist that did research on the Marshall islands. Holly Barker was a lady that worked on Marshall Island just around the northern area of the Pacific Ocean. She came to the island to teach english to the farmers. In my response I agree with Holly Baker on her stance on coming together and helping each other. She talks about how anthropology is about being the best humans we can be. And we have the tools to fix our mistakes and do better. I feel like we sometimes only think about our life’s without a second thought of who else is on this planet wit us. The main point that I agree with is that each generation needs to get the next generation ready to deal with the upcoming problems.

I found this meme about the move “Get Out”. If you are familiar with the movie. About halfway to the film Chris already realized something isn’t feeling right. Feeling uncomfortable by Rose’s parents Chris felt relieved at the site of a few other black people. However we later find out that Walter ,Georgina and Andre have been implanted with the brains white people. The only thing that has the power to retrieve the old traces of themselves is a camera flash. As a result of a camera flash they literally see the light and snap out of the “sunken”place, and return to their normal selves.

Fieldwork assignment Chapter 6

RACE

Black people in this country are kwon to be oppressed and treated unfairly. Americans are told to protest to express disapproval. However when someone who is Black in this country decides to protest it is wrong and white people are offended. For instance the controversy with Colin Kaepernick taking a knee in protest of the social injustices that blacks suffer in this country. As a result, many white Americans were angry including the president of the United States calling any NFL player that took a knee in protest a ‘‘ son of a bitch’‘. The sad reality in America is that black people can not protest without back lash from whites.

1) How does the information presented in the film challenge our system of racial classification?

Should there be Race?

The documentary The Human Family Tree captures scientists efforts to retrace every single human back to one common shared ancestor. Within the film there's compelling evidence that challenges our conception of race. Our society has created a social system to classify humans by “race”. Race is known to be associated with biology and genetics. However this film provides evidence that challenges the idea of race with the sole fact all humans came from the same place; Africa. Many individuals along with groups believe that humans have different subspecies and we are different based on phenotypical features.

At 16:30 in the film, Spencer Wells concludes that the human species originated in Africa. All humans came from the same place and share the same ancestors. As the documentary progresses it talks about how our ancestors started to move out of Africa into different regions of the world. The different climates and environments had different effects on our ancestors. For example at 56:38 in the film, the narrator explains how Africans in Asia were lightening up in cold areas due to how the sun was so scarce. As an adaptation their skin had to lighten up in order to absorb more sun. Over time our dark skin and melanin had became less common based on where an individual was. This proves that a ‘white’ person is no different from a ‘black’ person. The only race among humans is in fact the human ‘race’. The vast genetic possibilities and the certain phenotypes we express may seem to be different races but, we are all the same.

Race creates barriers that tells us that we are different from one another which in fact we are all very much alike, our differences are only “skin deep”. This film questions the social construct of race by showing us that we are all the same, sharing 99 percent of similar DNA. After this film I further question the system of phenotypic classifications. If there’s races based on color but there’s no biological support behind it, should we continue to classify humans as different?
