Today, I want to help in any way I can to stop the evil humans from poaching whales here.” Luke stated in a strong, yet confident manner. His words were true - whales weren’t his favorite animal, but they were in the sea so he had to help them when they can’t help themselves. “Is there anywhere I can donate to this cause? Or an action I could take?”

Morgan’s smile was somewhat genuine at this point, and he shook his head a little, “I don’t really...I mean...I don’t meet a lot of people who care that much, so...this is a change.” He cleared his throat, shaking his head, “I don’t...I mean, yeah we take donations, but I don’t collect them. But we’re having a fundraiser at one of the restaurants on the docks. If you want to come.”

        “Really?”, Noemi echoed in surprise, arching her brows slightly. “Then I can just get on the boat with you and spend you some company? I can bring cookies and stuff.” Lifting her shoulders up slightly, a crooked smile took over her lips. “I don’t care about the money. I really want to help.”

“Yeah, I’d like that. I don’t – not a lot of people uhm...you know, come out with me. That are my friends. Sorry, is that weird?” Morgan knew his social skills sucked, but Noemi was always nice to him, and he appreciated it to say the least.

Rhiannon was in the back office of the Tire Palace, back pressed the wall as she tried to blow the smoke from her cigarette to the open window rather than in front of her own face. She coughed after a moment, still not used to the burn the the smoke left her in throat. She had mainly started smoking as an act of rebellion in college but never really got used to it. At the sound of the bell ringing out front, she glanced at the hallway, assuming someone not on their break would take care of it. However, after the third and following fourth ringing of the bell, Rhiannon sighed, putting out the cigarette with her boot. 

“Coming,” she yelled in the direction of the front desk. She heaved a sigh, expecting that the customer would likely yell at her for taking so long - even though her break only started three minutes ago and that made manning the desk someone else’s problem. She steeled herself as she walked out. “Sorry for the wait,” she started, stifling her southern accent. She was hoping that her coveralls were enough of a sign that she wasn’t a goddamn receptionist and she wouldn’t get yet another ‘hi, honey, can you get one of the mechanics for me?’ Pushing that to the back of her mind, she put her hands on the counter. “What can I help you with?”

Morgan felt wildly out of place, rocking back and forth on his heels as he tried to get someone’s attention. As soon as the girl appeared, an awkward smile appeared on his face, “Hey. Hi. Yeah, I was wondering uh...” He rubbed the back of his neck, pointing to his truck outside. “I know my way around a boat’s engine, and I thought it would be similar to a car’s, but I think I ruined it even more. It won’t start.”

The sound of the meowing had Marley’s attention turning towards the cat, eyes brightening at the sight of the animal, that she reached to scratch gently behind the ears. She’d had a cat, growing up–Nasty, his name had been, as that’s what her mother had always called him, due to the fact that he’d been a dumpster cat. He did live up to his name, in terms of attitude, but Marley had adored him. “I don’t think that’s bad at all.” She turned back over her shoulder, offering the man a smile as she listened to him explain his living situation. “Oh, am I?” Teasing, she made her way over to where he sat on his chair, plopping down to sit on the arm of it, eyes scanning back over the area of the boat. “…I’d like that.” Nodding her head, Marley looked back down at Morgan.

Morgan glanced up at Marley with a smile, glad to have some company on his boat. Normally, it was just him and the cat. And while he loved his cat, she wasn’t much of a conversation holder. “When it gets cold, I have blankets inside. I also have a portable heater, except Mittens always likes to sit in front of it.” Morgan huffed out a breath, “Hungry?”

       “Friends are supposed to be honest with their friends, and I am. I’m not just saying it to make you feel better,” Noemi reassured him, a small smile on her lips. “Really? Shit, that sucks. I could come and help out, if you want? Not sure I’m any good at fishing for plastic, I’ve never done it before, but I’d give it a try.”

“If you want to? But you know what? No one is good at fishing for plastic. I drive my boat and drag a net behind it so I can...kind of grab things. I get crap stuck in the motor and then it’s no fun for anyone.” He shook his head, glancing at Noemi, “You’d really want to help? You won’t get paid or anything; they’re broke conservationists.”

“So this is really it?” Marley asked, turning her head over her shoulder to glance at the man behind her, a smile beginning to tug at the corner of her lips. “You really live here?” Turning back to look at the interior of the boat–his home–her head shook in disbelief. “It’s so cool.” She whirled to face him then, her eyes bright with adoration. She couldn’t even begin to imagine the kind of freedom that came from living on a boat. He could literally pick up and leave whenever he wanted–sail to wherever his heart desired. Marley, of course, could do the same, but sailing the sea seemed a lot more fun than driving across country. “I think I gotta go buy a boat now.” She teased.

Mittens seemed more interested in the blonde who’d joined them on the trip than she was in Morgan, and the cat meowed loudly to get Marley’s attention. Morgan was sitting on one of the chairs, huffing out a laugh at her excitement, “Yeah. I mean – I own an apartment, too. Is it bad to say that my parent’s still pay for it? They refused to let me live on a boat, so...I have the apartment for me and the cat, and to take showers. But sometimes I’ll stay on here overnight, when it’s warm enough.” He gave a small smile, “You’re more than welcome to join me, you know.”

         “Does nobody want your flyers? They look so good.” Noemi had walked up to Morgan when she recognized him, accepting one of the flyers in his hands to take a closer look at it. “They’re all idiots. Whales are the coolest animals they are, and anyone who doesn’t care about them can go to hell.” Giving Morgan a small smile, she moved a bit closer. “What are you trying to do about the orcas?”

“You have to say that – you’re my friend,” Morgan huffed out a breath, though he smiled a little at Noemi anyway, “Thanks. Well, we have this conservation group going that’s going to go fishing for plastic. The more we get out of the bay area, the less risk it poses to whales. If they eat enough plastic, they suffocate.”

Liam would never not be constantly pressed to smile in the presence of Morgan, especially when he so easily blurted out his response within a beat of the question. Releasing the fork so that the other could take it, he quite deliberately brushed his fingers against Morgan’s before dropping his hand back by his side. “Booths set up for charities, huh? Suppose the department could always use some more options.” It wasn’t exactly in Liam’s job description, but if it gave him more time to see Morgan, especially doing something that obviously meant a lot to him, then he’d happily make it so. “We’ll save that for later. Then you can try to win me a stuffed bear,” he teased with a wink directed at the other.

“That’s real cute that you think I’m even somewhat athletic, Liam.” Morgan laughed a little at the thought, shaking his head even as he walked with the other. “You should consider partnering with this one group – it’s called uhm..Bikers Against Child Abuse. They go with kids to court hearings so they feel protected...give them road names and all that kind of stuff,” Morgan smiled a little more, rocking back and forth before he motioned towards where all the booths were, “Would you want to...uhm...go on my boat sometime? On the lake? I usually just...relax but it’d be nice to have...company.”

       Josie had been staring at her phone as she walked, a multitasking combination she had mastered over the years, when suddenly a piece of paper appeared over her phone. Staring at the flyer for a moment, she then slowly looked up at the other. “Whales?”, she echoed, arching her brow. “I don’t know. They’ve never tried to kill me or stole my drinks so… yeah?”

“Why would a whale try to steal your drinks?” Morgan was genuinely curious about her answer, though he knew a bullshit response when he heard one. He’d been hearing them all day. “Right. Well...want to donate?”

        “Who doesn’t?” Luke questioned the man back before taking a hold of the flyer he was holding. Smoothing out the creases in the corners, he read it from top to bottom before looking back up at the man. “You’ve done good work on this. The topic and the flyer itself didn’t deserve to be treated like shit from the person before.” He stated in a calm manner. “What is this all about anyways?”

“Huh. Thanks,” Morgan shrugged his shoulders, looking at the flyer again, “It helps when you work for the marina, you know. People care when something is in the news, but they don’t want to do anything but say ‘oh, that’s too bad,’ and move on with their lives.” He glanced at Luke, clearing his throat, “We’re losing more whales than we have. If we don’t stop the poaching, well, they’ll all be gone from up here.”

Liam was an absolute fool, a complete sucker for Morgan’s inability to pick up on when he was teasing the other or joking. The momentary words only spurred on the smile that stretched across his lips, amusement written into it. A brow perked at the question, his eyes drifting down to the uniform that he had to wear, “In a sense.” His eyes immediately lifted back to Morgan, that persistent smile still etched into his features, seemingly always prominent in the presence of the other. “Well, if you don’t go tattling on me, I think we have some time to check out a few booths.” He lifted the fork full of funnel cake to his lips, “If you want to.” He added before taking the bite.

“Yeah. Yeah, I want to.” He tried not to answer too quickly, but he failed at that as well. He grinned a little more, even leaning forward to take the fork from Liam so he could take a bite of the funnel cake as well, “There’s a couple booths set up for charities. I wanted to go over there and uh – see what I could do, you know.” It took Morgan a moment to realize that didn’t exactly sound like fun for the other, and he backtracked, “Or there’s a ring toss? Promise I won’t tattle.”

There was something to be said about someone who didn’t pry, yet allowed him to say what he needed to and save it from simply living beneath the surface; because god knew that was never a good thing when it came to Kaiden. “Remind me to leave the damn thing behind next time.” The wonders it might do for his sanity. Were it anyone else, he might have curled into himself a little more when Morgan moved closer, left him cringing away from anyone even trying to get into his personal space, but he’d been so used to it being Morgan doing just that, it didn’t seem to bother him any more; at least with the last sliver of space left between them. “Fully grown?” Kaiden could at least pander to passive conversation, something he’d picked up on a few years back. Details, all he had to do was listen for one little detail and pick up on it. “What kind of whale needs two blowholes? Seems excessive.”

“No one usually listens to me,” Morgan gave a small smile, shrugging his shoulders as he kept his arms crossed over his chest. “People take pictures with their phones, but they have to keep them on silent. But they miss out on the experience if they all have their heads in them and...whales only appear for a few seconds at a time.” He wrinkled his nose, trying not to go off on a boring tangent that Kaiden wouldn’t enjoy. “Well, uhm...they just do.” Morgan felt embarrassed for his little idea of taking Kaiden whale watching, unsure if his friend was genuinely happy to be out on a boat in the ocean. “And how was...your day?”

“Uh, what?” Adam turned around, unsure of what exactly he had just heard. “Are you talking about Free Willy?” He didn’t dislike whales, but he didn’t usually give them much thought. They were just big and made weird noises. Kind of ugly if he thought about them too much. “If you’re talking about the country, though. I’m not sure. I’ve never actually been.” Nudging him with his elbow, “Fuck Sea World, though. Am I right?”

“I guess...” He rose an eyebrow, trying to think about Wales and why he’d be talking about the country. “Uhm...yeah. Fuck Sea World.” The curse felt strange coming from his lips, and he almost felt embarrassed for cursing in the first place. “They abuse their whales, and they don’t have adequate homes for them...and the way they got them in the first place? I’ll never go to any Sea World.”

“Better thrown back at you than the sea, right?” Carina smiled, taking the flyer. “I do actually. Love them so much I made a career out of it.” She chuckled. Working as an Aquatic Veterinarian gave the brunette the insight to every statistic out there on most marine life. “I never agreed when people argued that animals don’t have souls. A mother orca lost her calf and clung to it for days after its death. They grieve; live and die just as we do.”

“I agree. I remember that, it broke my heart. People think animals don’t have emotions, but...that’s clearly wrong. You work at the aquarium?” he asked curiously, holding the papers to his chest for a few moments, “Do you get to...be close to them?”

Though her headphones were in as she walked, Brady couldn’t help but notice the guy in front of her trying to hand out flyers being repeatedly rejected. It didn’t surprise her, people these days didn’t spend much time caring one way or another about most causes. Feeling bad for the guy, Brady pulled out her headphones, walking over towards him to at least hear him out. “I…well, I’ve never seen a whale, but…I’d imagine they’re cool?” she shrugged, taking the flyer from him to look over it. “I like most animals, so like…yeah.”

Morgan looked at the woman after a moment, more surprised that she’d stopped to have a conversation with him than anything else, “Really? Not even at the aquarium?” he looked towards the dock, pointing in the direction of a few boats, “If you ever want to go, tour on me. That sounds weird...I’m a boat driver, for the whale watching tours. There are a few other whales coming in...I think. Uh...” Twenty nine years of life still couldn’t give him good social skills, apparently.

“Wait – there’s only about seventy-six orcas left in the region here in the BC, we need to...not throw my flyers back at me,” Morgan trailed off as yet another person pushed the flyer he was handing out back into his face. Frowning, he tried his best to smooth the paper back out, unable to stomach the idea of wasting more of the recycled paper he was using for the flyers. His disappointment was evident, and he turned towards the next person, holding out the flyer, “You like whales?”

“Oh, this finger painting is amazing, but the drinks are even better.” Jane was more than willing to accept alcohol that came with painting. She wasn’t a particularly creative person, but she could hold her own if she needed to. Nevertheless, that alcohol surely was kicking in. “I’m gonna draw a penis.”

Morgan considered Jane one of his more wild friends. While he wasn’t allowed to drink any alcohol, he watched out for her when she did, and he enjoyed her antics when she did so. “A penis? What about the kids? They could see it.”
