ok so i was thinking about jo’s ‘eccentric’ comment in the last episode and was like 'i dunno, henry’s not that bad’ but then i remembered that these are the things jo currently knows/believes about henry:

he examines dead bodies for a living

he used to be a gravedigger

he’s incredibly closed off and private

he has apparently no concern for his own safety and wellbeing

he knows loads about medicine

he knows loads about history

he knows loads about fashion

he basically just knows a lot of stuff

he has lived abroad

he has way more money than he really should

his closest friend is his elderly roommate

there used to be someone called abigail but Something Bad happened

he lives in an antiques shop

he hates phones

he hates microwaves

he’s into bdsm

he’s been shot in the chest at some point

all of these things at the age of 35

I’ve decided that my favorite ships are those ones where you don’t care if they’re together romantically or not, as long as they're together. It doesn’t matter if they’re kissing, as long as you know they’ll have each other’s back through everything, and really it’s a stronger bond than if they were banging anyway. thinking abt how the immortals in tog see each other after their deaths and how triggering henry’s death must have been for andy and quynh, specifically, given he died at sea. because henry didn’t just have his first death and wake up fine. he died in the middle of the atlantic, hundreds of miles from the nearest shore. that means he must have died over and over again in a constant cycle of drowning, awakening, swimming until he exhausts himself, becoming too starved or dehydrated, too blistered from the sun or frozen from the cold to move, and drowning again. and again. and again. until he finally made it back to shore, nearly a damn year later.

the only reason i’m happy forever was cancelled when it was is that it was stopped before they could do an episode where abe has a health scare and henry is faced with the very real fact that one day in the rapidly approaching future his son will be gone 🙃

Jo and Henry

Most romances on tv and in film are about “one true love” and I really liked that this show was sending the message that you, even if you’re mortal, can have more than one “true love” in your life. They’re not mutually exclusive. Jo truly loved her husband and Henry truly loved Abigail. But you don’t have to live an empty life or refuse to embrace love going forward - that’s no way to honor what you had.

Pretty cool. And it’s the kind of thing that mostly older people deal with, losing a life-long love to death. Since stories don’t tend to focus on older characters, those themes are not the focus of most media. But there are tons of people whose lives, because of tragedy or mental health or other circumstances, don’t follow the “normal” life pattern. And the ideal pattern of “one true love” excludes even more people. It was really cool for Jo to be one of those people and find, in the strange miracle/curse of Henry’s life, true understanding. And for both of them to honor love while trying to embrace life.

i keep looking at this gifset of the moment abigail finds out about henry’s immortality, and i just can’t get over these two gifs of this one specific moment within the scene: when henry leans over abraham’s crib, whispering his name with so much raw fucking affection and love and regret, before he kisses him on the head and rests their foreheads together.

because it happens for all of 5 seconds before the scene moves on, but it shows how deep henry’s love for his son runs. abigail only found out henry was alive because she caught him sneaking back into the house to see abe. she’d witnessed him die in her arms, there’s no explanation he could’ve offered that would have sufficed except for the truth. normally, i’d say he’d have used his death as a clean break. he wouldn’t try to return and explain what happened. no matter how much he loved abigail, he’d have immediately left to the next city, next country, next continent. but this time he doesn’t. despite his ptsd from the last time he tried telling someone he loved about his condition, he risks being caught and exposed because he couldn’t leave without having one last look at baby abe. he couldn’t leave without telling his son goodbye.

and it just got me thinking about how henry is just… he’s just so fucking Soft when it comes to children. it’s such a nice step away from the general toxic tropes about men and “ hands-off ” parenting, especially for being a male protag in a crime show. because henry??? he fucking LOVES to be engaged. he absolutely adores children, in all their messy, loud glory. he’s just such a parental figure. period. whether the kid is his or not, biological or adopted; whether they be a toddler or 70 years old, henry just has this sheer, instinctive affection for offspring.

whenever there’s a scene with henry and kids, especially when it comes to abraham’s actors ( whether be it abe at 10 years old, teen abe, david krumholz, or judd hirsch ), ioan just fucking nails it every time. he pours so much warmth and adoration into his scenes that you can’t help but believe he would give up everything for his son. it’s in his eyes and it’s in his actions. he just radiates such a protective, doting parental energy despite all the hardships and violence and trauma he’s experienced, and i love it. i love that that’s how ioan and the directors and writers ultimately envisioned henry: not as this broody immortal, but as this loving, engaged, and nurturing forever-a-parent, even when his little boy isn’t so little.
