It was intoxicating to be in her presence again. To feel her pressed against him…to know she was there physically. She was with him. And that was what mattered. A breathless laugh escaped his lips, and he almost leaned in to kiss her cheek, but she pulled away before he could.

And the moment was shattered, and his smile died, a thick swallow disguising the hurt of her moving away. He pulls away farther, nodding slowly. Foolish, he thought. Chocolate and honeyed words wouldn’t mend wounds he’d created. Wounds he’d torn at and made worse. And so, he cut himself off and gave her a tight smile.

“Sounds wonderful, Noa. I’ll meet you here, and you can give me the grand tour. I’ll be sure to bring flowers instead of buying them last minute,” he replied, trying to tease her. He nodded his head. “Enjoy your chocolates. I’ll see you soon.”

They say their goodbyes and Noa continues work like nothing happened. Which in itself is a lie, because something definitely did happen and she can’t seem to continue her usual routine without messing up more than a few times. The rest of the day passes by slowly and it feels like she’s in a dream. One of those dreams where you’re certain something is about to happen, but for one reason or the other, it just doesn’t. Time stretches on and you never reach the end of it.

It’s Josiah that pulls her out of it. She hasn’t even realised it’s already closing time. Grabbing her bag -- which contains his chocolates -- she closes up the store and walks him to her apartment a few blocks away. On the way over there, she tells him about the neighbourhood and points out some plants and flowers in people’s front gardens here and there. When she puts her key in the lock of her door, she hesitates for a moment and takes a deep breath before opening it.

“Well, here we are,” she says, the nervous tone in her voice clear. She steps inside and moves to the side so he can walk in as well. They’re already in the small kitchen, behind it the living area and off to the side her bedroom with ensuite. It’s tiny, the whole apartment can be seen from one angle. The ridiculous amount of plants definitely don’t open the space up. But it’s hers and she’s damn proud of it.

“It depends on what broke the trust in the first place. If it was done without any good reasoning behind it or how severe the situation was. And then it also depends on the apology and if the person really is sorry. I tend to forgive people I’m close to quicker than people I barely know.”

I don’t know. I love all animals. I hope there are endless lives as animals waiting for me after this one.”
