The other seemed to be happy; of course he was, Nyx bought coins. “Thank you-” He paid the money without hesitation, long and tender fingers counting the money before handing it to the other. He bit the inside of his cheek and snorted when an Abra was mentioned. 

“I highly doubt I will come close to winning an Abra, but thank you.” He eyed the machines. “And if I would win, I would not go for an Abra, how lovely they might be.” 

Olly accepted the money and pushed the coins toward the man.  He was clearly ready to get going at the machines.

“Well, best of luck to you, sir,” he told him.  “I hope you win enough coins to get what you want.”  Sometimes the machines did pay out big.  If they didn’t, no one would bother even trying to gamble.  Olly caught himself wondering if this man would be one of their rare lucky winners.  The chances were slim, but... anything was possible, right?

“Shoot,” she raised one hand and made a pistol motion at Olly. “You got me there, kid.”

It was a little strange to see him laughing, as she got the feeling that he was far more serious than he now appeared to be. Dee took another glance at her phone, new text messages displayed on the screen. More questions about why she hadn’t shown up yet.

“If you’ve been working all this time, aren’t you tired? Unless you know of a really good coffee place to go to. If you do, tell me right now so I don’t fall asleep before sunrise.”

“To be truthful, it is exhausting,” he told her, rubbing the back of his neck.  “I usually just make my own coffee, though, sorry.

“Besides, even if I did have a place I went to regularly, it’d either be up in Celadon or down in Fuchsia.  You’d be better off just getting to where you need to go and crashing.”  His back ached as he thought of how nice it would be to lie down and he yawned without meaning to.

“So you’re basically a Pokemon babysitter who has a funky name,” she gave another grin, tilting her head whilst she inspected his appearance. “Hmm, well. I’m not super duper sure what kinda person you look like, but the blue hair definitely says something.”

From Dee’s pocket came a vibration and she dug around to fish her phone out, grimacing at the time and the rather concerned text from her cousin wondering “where on this planet” she’d gotten to. Before responding, she keyed in a quick reply. “I was meant to get to a relative’s place in Fuchsia City eight hours ago. Or sometime around then.”

“Tell me,” she struck a ridiculous pose, putting on the most serious expression possible. “Do I look like a serious person?” She stood normally and continued. “I’m part of the Sinnoh Elite Four and as of now, slacking off. Not very professional of me, but what can you do when you’re in a completely different region talking to someone with funny hair.”

A Pokemon babysitter with a funky name?  Olly actually chuckled at that.  It was one of the more apt descriptions he’d gotten from a stranger, and he was surprised.

“I suppose you’ll be getting there fashionably late, Miss Elite Four,” he said with a smirk.  “But what does my opinion matter?  I’m just a Pokemon babysitter talking to someone with pink hair at three in the morning on a work night.”

He pressed his lips together, licking them after and damn his mouth was dry. Dark eyes darted towards the left and he nodded at the male before walking over there, pushing in some silver colored coins as he ordered a fresh water. As soon as it fell down the machine and Nyx had grabbed it and turned around he felt like he was trapped and in the end he sighed. 

“Please, I’d like 50 coins.” He murmured as he walked over to the game corner worker. He looked far from happy. But just for an hour or so, that couldn’t be bad? That wouldn’t kill him, right?” 

Olly smiled.  He’d seen that look on too many of the faces of their customers.

“50 coins, coming right up,” he said, pulling out one of the small-sized rolls of coins and placing it on the counter between them.  “That’ll be ¥1000.”

Olly had never tried the slots himself, knowing all too well that the chances of him winning big were too small to risk a month’s rent on coins.  Sometimes he got to play with the Pokemon they gave away, and he had hatched a lot of them.  Every now and then, though, he wished that he could take one or two of them for himself.

“Today you can win an Abra for 120 coins, unless you’ve got your sights set on a particular prize?”

ADF 30 Day Challenge: Day 9

How does your character smell? Do they wear perfume or cologne?

Olly always smells kind of singed because of how much time he spends with Lima.  Oftentimes he’s also pretty sweaty from biking.  He can’t afford cologne but if he had someone he wanted to impress he might resort to stealing some.

It was an odd day when Olly got off from work when it was still daylight.  Stepping out of the Game Corner, he took a deep breath of the (admittedly disgusting) city air.  He didn’t mind it so much anymore, though.

Unlocking his bike from the rack, he hopped on and leisurely rode toward Route 16.  He was determined to hatch the egg he had found, and he was pretty sure that it was getting close; it quivered to the touch at this point.

He’d barely made it out of the city limits when he heard the telltale crack that indicated the egg was hatching.  He quickly pulled his bike over and dismounted as carefully as he could.  Removing his bag from his shoulders, he reached in and pulled out the egg.  A splintering crack ran down the crescent moon marking.

“Shh,” he said, gently caressing it.  A small, clawed paw tore through the shell, and it was soon followed by an arm, then a head with the same moon-like marking.

“Aww, I knew you’d be a Teddiursa,” he said, cradling the Pokemon in his arms as she climbed all the way out of her egg.  She blinked up at him and shoved a paw in her mouth, sucking on it.  “My sweet little Teddi,” he cooed, patting her gently on the head.

“Urs!  Ursa!” she said, reaching for him with her free paw.  Olly smiled, letting her cling to his side.  “Welcome to the world, little one.”

“What kind of job involves riding up and down here every night to hatch eggs? But, uh,” she pointed at him, her finger making circles in the air. “You don’t exactly look like a breeder.”

Dee really couldn’t comment on his strange appearance, having a head of pink hair herself, but that was beside the point. She dropped her backpack on the ground, leaning over to rummage for Creep’s Poke Ball. Dee threw a scowl at the sleeping Carnivine once she stood up again.

“Alright, troublemaker. Return.” Creep went back to the capsule with a brief flash of light. “Oh yeah, I suppose I should introduce myself. I’m Dee, it’s nice to meet you buddy.”

“I work for the Game Corner up in Celadon,” he told her, shrugging his shoulders.  It wasn’t a lie; one of the eggs he had in his bag was even an Abra.  “Some of the prizes we give away are Pokemon, and we’ve got to get them somehow.”

“Besides, if I don’t look like a breeder, then what do I look like to you?” he asked, an odd smile coming over his face.  He’d heard it all before.  Even when he’d been living an average life, people had called him a delinquent or even a monster.  Now that he actually was those things... it didn’t sting as much to get told that.

He dismissed his strange smile with a wave of his hand and finally looked the woman up and down.  She didn’t look that much older than him, but she exuded a confidence that he’d only seen in very strong Trainers.  She probably did have ties to one League or another.

“My name’s Olly,” he said.  “Are you headed for Fuchsia, or is your destination further than that?”

She finished her sandwich in a relatively short amount of time. Gosh, it felt so much better to have some food in her stomach. Now at least she could relax. Though, something seemed a bit off about her new friend. He was always looking at the people who walked by, kinda glaring at them too. Well, the looks didn’t seem too friendly to her. Maybe she was just making assumptions.

“Well, I mean, i’m never alone. I’ve got my Pokemon with me!” Yeah, she was traveling completely alone. Marie didn’t think there was any danger around other regions her Pokemon couldn’t handle. It was an incredibly naive idea. Still, they had been through so much together. What’s the point in worrying about any dangers? Other than the fact that they could be, you know, dangerous. 

“Team Rocket…?” His words didn’t seem to register. Who was team rocket? Based on the fact they steal Pokemon, they sound a little like Team Flare back in Kalos. That can’t be a good thing. Suddenly, she felt a little panicked. Her team, her family, could be taken away. She couldn't bear the thought of such a thing happening. 

“Eh- who’s Team Rocket?” 

Now this was something Olly hadn’t been expecting.  Sure, he had assumed that Marie was a bit naive, but this?

“You’ve never heard of Team Rocket?” he asked incredulously.  She wasn’t from around here, of course, but he thought that everyone had at least heard of Team Rocket.  After all, they were one of the oldest crime syndicates in the world.  Perhaps Kalos was more peaceful than he ever could have imagined...

He looked up at the quickly darkening sky, trying to figure out where to even begin.  Even little kids in Kanto and Johto knew who Team Rocket were.  He took a deep, shaky breath and turned his head to look back at the girl.

“Team Rocket is a criminal organization around these parts.  They have connections to the mob, and are also notorious for experimenting on Pokemon, as well as stealing them and trying to sell them for a profit.”  He felt his throat get tight as he explained this, wishing that he knew all of this from an outsider’s perspective.  “Most folks like to think that they were stamped out years ago, but the roots of the organization remained and it’s been steadily growing back into full-bloom.”  He shook his head.  “There were even Gym Leaders in the past who worked for Team Rocket.  They’ve brought a lot of destruction to Kanto over the years...”

Dark eyes shifted from the machines to the male that was talking to him, scanning up and down and then back to the machines. His heart rate quickened; not because of some teenage reaction to a pretty male. What a joke- He was just excited to be so close to the gambling. 

“Just   ¥1000 ?” He asked, swallowing and then frowning. He was thirsty- “Do you guys have, uhm, some kind of soda machine maybe?” It might be better to drink something, maybe then he would be able to resist the knot in his stomach that tightened as he heard money fall from one of the machines. And oh- how many nights had he wasted away trying to collect rewards for that one reward he wanted; Pink and Blue and utterly unobtainable. 

The man who stood in front of him seemed somewhat nervous, but it wasn’t with the anxiety that brand new customers had.  They were generally overwhelmed and unsure of what to do, or excited, thinking that they’d easily be able to outsmart the slot machines.  They couldn’t, of course, but they could hope.

Instead, this guy gave off the aura of someone who’d sat down in front of the slots many times before and couldn’t bear to tear himself away.  It would be best to keep this customer happy.

“Yes, we have a vending machine against the far wall,” Olly told him, pointing to his left.  “It dispenses lemonade, soda, and bottled water.”  He smiled at the dark-haired man.  “Please feel free to help yourself.”

When Dee saw him grinning at the current berry tree situation, she muttered something under her breath. If her luck hadn’t gone south, she wouldn’t even be talking to a complete stranger at three in the morning about how her Carnivine is the world’s biggest problem child.

A shudder went down her back as the bones of his neck cracked; the noise made her feel nauseous. Even though she had the urge to cover her ears, she ignored it for the sake of being polite.

“The man, huh. Can’t be as bad as battling a million and one hopefuls every day,” Dee sighed, knowing what she said was slightly cruel, but by now everything had started to irk her. At least being in Kanto meant she could avoid work for a few days.

As soon as he mentioned hatching eggs, it piqued her curiosity and she craned her neck to peer at his bag. She’d noticed a few moments before that it looked rather full. “Ooh, an egg? From what I can see, you have a few there. But how do you balance on a bike with all of those…”

A million and one hopefuls? Olly thought.  Is she a Gym Leader, too?  Of course it would be his luck to keep running into powerful, important Trainers like that.  

“I’ve had a lot of practice,” he admitted, referring to his egg balancing act.  He had been spending his nights biking up and down Cycling Road for the last three years, after all.  “I like to consider myself a bit of a Pokemon breeder.  When you end up with as many eggs as I do, you get used to carrying several at a time.  Now it’s hardly difficult at all.”

ADF 30 Day Challenge: Day 8

Pick two songs that describe your character at two different points of their life, and explain why you chose them.

Like O, Like H by Tegan & Sara.  Younger Olly, around 8-14.  He was struggling to come to terms with his identity, and while he had to be a rock for his younger siblings, he had no one he could count on.  He wished that his parents would be there for him, but they never really were.

Olly Olly Oxen Free by Amanda Palmer.  Olly now (19).  He feels as though he’s not being entirely true to himself, as he’s still hiding a lot about himself and being part of Team Rocket doesn’t really sit well with him.  He feels sorry for himself, guilty for feeling that way, and wonders if he’ll ever amount to anything worthwhile (he kind of doubts he will).

It was a love/hate relationship if he was honest; the game corner was most likely affiliated with some sort of criminal organization like all game corners he knew. That what he had tried to ignore for the past years was right there in front of him. But still-

The trainer had a terrible, awful addiction to gambling. Which was why he was standing in front of the game corner right now, debating whether he should go in or be as smart as his IQ suggested him to be and stay away.

Just for one or two games, that couldn’t hurt.

Another day at the Game Corner.  Olly rubbed his eyes, trying to grind out the grogginess that made them want to slip closed.  He hadn’t slept much the night before; he never did, considering he was out on his bike all hours of the night.

He looked up and pasted a smile on his face when he heard the door open.  A man with dark hair stepped through.  Most of the other gamblers didn’t take mind of the newcomer, too caught up in their own games.  Just burning holes in their wallets, Olly thought.

“Welcome to the Celadon Game Corner, sir,” he said to the man as he approached the counter.  “Can I interest you in some play coins?  You can get 50 of them for a mere ¥1000.”

Describe your character’s hands. Are they small, long, calloused, smooth, stubby?

Olly’s hands are calloused from riding his bicycle up and down the Cycling Road every day for the last three years.  He has long fingers that he once used to play the piano, but he hasn’t touched an instrument since his parents threw him out.

Olly is covered in small puncture wound scars from being bitten by countless newly-hatched Zubat.

He also has a large scar across his belly that he got in a knife fight with another Rocket Grunt.

   Her smile grew a little brighter when he took her offer.

    Plopping right down beside the stranger━ Olly━ she pulled out a little packaged sandwich . She really wasn’t sure what was in it, but that didn’t really matter. It was edible, supposedly. After stuffing it in her mouth, it tasted alright. Maybe it was some sort of peanut butter and jelly combination? Did they have that here?

“Nice to meet you Olly!” Marie mumbled with her mouth half full. She swallowed and wiped her cheek with a napkin. At least she tried to have some sense of manners. Her bag was still mostly filled with Pokemon food, but that would be saved for a later date. It probably wasn’t the best idea to let out her entire team in the middle of a busy city.

“Nope! i’m not!” It was the accent, wasn’t it ? “ i’m actually from the Kalos region! This is my first time in Kanto. It’s pretty different here, but you should totally visit sometime! I’m actually a Gym Leader back home, I kinda miss it. Just a little.” She really should stop with the long speeches.

She yammered on at a mile a minute, all while eating the sandwich she had plucked out of one of her grocery bags.  Olly opened his soda and took a drink while he listened, keeping an eye on everyone who passed by the bench.  No one seemed particularly suspicious, but one could never be sure.

“You’re not traveling alone, are you?  You must have some strong Pokemon with you if you’re a Gym Leader,” he noted, taking another contemplative swig from his soda.

“Listen,” he said, leaning toward her and lowering his voice.  “Don’t tell anyone I told you this, but Team Rocket’s still got a bit of a hold on the city,” he warned, glancing around behind him to make sure no one was listening in on their conversation.  “You need to keep a close eye on your Pokemon so they don’t get stolen.”  His voice was barely above a whisper now and he looked at her with pleading eyes.  Just because he worked for the organization didn’t mean that he approved of its practices.  Stealing made him feel sick to his stomach; it was even worse when the theft involved taking someone’s family from them.

What is your character’s most embarrassing moment?

When he was younger, he and Lima tried to take on the Cerulean Gym on a dare.  Lima was a Slugma and Olly’s only Pokemon at that point; you can imagine how miserably they failed against the Gym’s Water-types.

Marie scattered about grabbing various Pokemon berries, drinks, and other snacks. All these things weren’t only for the stranger, of course. She did have the intention of eating too. After all, that’s why she ran into the store in the first place. She hoped these things weren’t too expensive. Her budget had been blown mostly on transportation after losing her bus ticket.

     Quickly running up to the register to pay, she nearly tripped on another customers foot. That would have been even more embarrassing, whoops! Everything totaled just below her max budget, thank Arceus. Handing the money to the cashier, Marie walked out of the Pokemart with three bags dangling from her arms.

    She hopped over to the stranger who was now sitting on a nearby bench. Digging through one of the bags, the young Gym Leader pulled out a package of chips and a soda. Come to think of it, she never asked what the stranger might want to eat.

    “Here! Take these! I hope you’re okay with junk food. There really wasn’t much else.” She paused to grin at the stranger, “ Oh! Can I ask you what your name is? I try and remember the names of everyone I meet, especially when traveling. My name’s Marie, by the way.”

When she handed him the bag of chips and the soda, Olly’s mouth fell open.  He didn’t know what to say.  Part of him had been hoping that she’d forget about him while she was in the store; the other part was relieved that she seemed to have made it out of the shop without incident.

“Thanks,” he finally managed to say, setting down his bag of groceries so he could take the snacks.  “It’s perfect, I needed some salt.”  He gingerly opened the bag of chips and fished around for one before popping it into his mouth.  His stomach growled as he chomped on it and he realized that his hands were shaking.  Damn it, he thought.  He was really hungry.

“My name’s Olly,” he said, trying to keep up with everything Marie was saying.  Her words combined with her hint of an accent confirmed his previous assumption.

“So you’re really not from around here, huh?  I’ve only ever been as far as Johto.”  He let out a short laugh.  “I’m not exactly what you’d call a world-traveler.”
