Weekend Chuck Love
Lucky isn't the word for the beauty bestowed upon us this weekend. Thank you, Sun. I, for one, really appreciated your appearance. So with the sole goal of going out and enjoying the rays, I strapped on my chucks and tore up the streets.
My chucks were my go-to piece this weekend. They are a staple, in my book, to any wardrobe and are super easy to run around in.
Friday I wore my new "I met God, she's black," shirt from Rooftops NYC; khaki pants; a black and white sweater and black and white chucks.
Saturday I had about three outfits changes, haha. But in these photos I wore a black and white print dress from Target; a gray sweater borrowed from my mother and my black and white chucks.
Best Always, -S.

Spring Trends
We made it! Countless blizzards, tons of snow days, and even worse ice storms...we can say that we made it! Spring has finally greeted us with her first day! However, I am not quite sure that Mother Nature even noticed, as she beckons for us to still wear a coat but, is your closet ready?
As the Spring 2014 trends paraded around runways throughout the fall I've picked my favs to share with you all! So get ready for a wardrobe update, or if you're anything like me, a little seasonal wardrobe shifting with dash of spring shopping will do the trick.
First, say goodbye to those boring floral pastel patterns, this spring artsy eclectic patterns have greeted us with all their boldness and flair! These prints can be worn as separates to living up your basic pieces or if you are a little bold like me, in unison to create a walking masterpiece. Don't shy away from big bold prints! Pair a lively trouser with a classic white t-shirt for a city chic look. Likewise you can take just the blazer or a bold patterned top and pair it with a basic midi skit, crisp white denim, or a fun skater skirt.
Hey! Don't you push that black and white to the side, it is still in style this spring (and if you ask me, it is never going away). It is just about everywhere and as we embark on sunny days the all white trend will definitely be on the top of my list! Streamlined and simple, something that is very difficult to mess up! If you haven't hopped on the black and white train yet I don't know what you are waiting for! You better catch it this go round!
Accessorize!!! Spring is one of my favorite seasons because you get to play around with accessories! You don't have to worry about your coat hiding what you created or worry about being too hot if you decided to wear your favorite fedora. Cut out shoes, which are my favs, are everywhere! I am a huge fan and have a few pair to show my fascination. Hats and big vintage inspired shades are always a go for the spring! Paired with the simplest of looks, you instantly create a pulled together outfit.
Sorbet shades and pastels are EVERYWHERE! Don't be afraid to mix and match, within reason of course. Monochrome looks are still in so don't be afraid to pick one shade and stick with it! Play around with shapes and fit. Don't be nervous.
Show us which trends you like! Don't forget to hashtag #mosaicunion and make sure you like our facebook page! Stay tuned for more spring inspired post!

Beauty Tip of the Week
(urbanclinic.net)
This week's beauty tip is going to focus on Apple Cider Vinegar and all its health glory! I know these haven't been quite weekly as I am struggling to find time between my work schedule and my workout regimen however, this one was on the top of my list when I decided to begin this post series.
Apple Cider Vinegar, or ACV, has many natural remedy like properties and I myself have used it for a few different things on my personal being as well as around the house. I have personally used it on my hair as a cleanser as well as I just recently began putting a tablespoon in a 8 oz glass of water with the lemon of half a juice to drink first things in the morning. Now, I know you are thinking "DRINK ACV", but it's not actually that bad. I'm not saying that it's good either, but it is manageable.
ACV has anti bacterial properties that are known to kill the bacteria on the scalp that cause dandruff or dry scalp. Being that 80% of the year my hair is worn in it's natural curly state I tend to use quite a bit of product that can cause product build up in between washes. I also don't use shampoo because of the way my hair feels after each use, so by using ACV as my cleansing agent once a month I am able to rid my scalp and hair of any build up.
I also just began a morning regimen of drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon of ACV. I add fresh lemon juice because I just can't do the taste of the vinegar by itself. ACV is known for is detoxifying properties as well. So consuming one to two glasses of water with a tablespoon of ACV is said to help flush out the system. ACV is also known as a "weight loss" agent as well as a digestive aid if you have any issues such as acid reflux. I am going to give it a try for a little while, just to see if I feel any differences within my body and I will keep you updated.
The last way I've used ACV is for cleaning. It is awesome for disinfecting and great for household chores. My mom uses just a few tablespoons mixed in with her normal cleaning agent when she uses the steamer on our area rug. Disclaimer, you might have a slight vinegar smell linger for a few days especially from the steamer itself, but it goes away.
So, what ways do you use Apple Cider Vinegar? Are you up to put the beauty tip of the week to work?
Give it a try!
Enjoy!

Brunch in the Garden
As we all know, I can never sit still for very long periods of time. With this being said, I ventured back to Nashville to visit my boyfriend and some of my friends this past weekend. The idea of not having any kind of spring break was driving me insane as my timelines were filled with pictures of my fellow peers enjoying sunny weather in tropical places.
I had an amazing time! The weather was beautiful Saturday and the city was buzzing with people. Oh how I missed it. We started our Saturday with brunch at one of our favorite places, The Garden Brunch. This Nashville gem almost slipped through my fingers before I moved but I was lucky enough to catch it the last month I was there. So now, every time I go back it is my boyfriend and my first on my list!
We sipped on a carafe of Poinsettia's (cranberry juice and champagne) and just about inhaled our food as we talked about our plans for the day. Some of the best brunch food I've had, and the focus on healthier alternatives which allows me to eat a little more freely.
We stopped by the mall and I ran to H&M; he let me lose like a little kid in a candy store. The idea of just getting an H&M in Nashville a year ago, and then moving to Little Rock and watching it slip through your fingers saddens my heart every time I think about it.
I decided to wear this burgundy floppy hat, a simple white chiffon button down, distressed jeans, and a pair of chunky heeled sneakers. Something simple, yet chic as we decided to plan in sun that Nashville decided to bestow us with!
Enjoy!

Shamrock the block in RVA? Of course!
This past weekend I traveled to RVA (you know, one of my fav places) to get down with the get down with some close friends in celebration of St. Patty's Day.
No, I'm not Irish. But I do enjoy the traditions of cultures other than my own.
I wore a crop top, skater skirt two-piece from H&M; black and white chucks; and a burgundy, over-sized cape from American Apparel.
Best Always, -S.

Dressing Room Tour
Depsite my tomboy like childhood, having a dressing room has been something I've wanted since I was a little girl. The tons of Youtube gurus that I watch on a daily basis with their dressing/recording rooms didn't help calm my want for one either. Upon accepting my job in Little Rock, my first decision was that I wanted to get a 2 bedroom apartment as to be able to make this fantasty come to fruition. As I am still getting settled into my apartment I am going to give you all a continuious updates as I finish decorating my room.
My first purchase was a basic clothing rack. I chose this to be able to hang up everything that I would consider "new purchases," so I am able to see what I have and what needs to be worn. Next, I struggled with choosing between buying bookshelves for shoe storage or a regular shoe rack. I actually am still torn however, I did purchase a regular simple black 10 tier shoe rack, but I am thinking about swapping it out for my bookshelves at a later date as I believe they would just have a more chic look.
I did purchase a cube style bookshelf to store the shoes that I have that wouldn't fit on my shoe rack and decorated that with some teal orbs and a bracelet/watch storage. I grabbed a few bits and bobs to decorate the exterior of the room from my new favorite store Garden Ridge to jazz the space up a little.
My full body mirror is probably one of my favorite pieces in the room. It has a rustic gold trim and it is pretty sturdy in nature so I don't have to worry about it falling or anything of the sort. Another favorite of mine is my rug! I am a fan of shabby chic in home decor and I grabbed it as soon as I laid eyes on it.
Next on the list is furniture, I am thinking something white or black to keep with the simplistic nature of the room. You all will definitely get a sneak peak whenever I decided to add this last part! Enjoy! Kiara Va_slim25 (ig)
#OOTD 2.20.14
The warm weather has finally arrived!
Hopefully it will decide to stay. Shhh! Don't speak too loudly, you might scare it away!
To celebrate, I decided I would let my ankles breathe. Ahhh.
So I wore black and white, penny loafers from Bass; Printed pants from Top Shop; a white button-up from H&M and a gray cardigan I "borrowed" from my mother.
Best Always -S.

A touch of red!
With a bit of warmer weather gracing the Little Rock are this past weekend dressing to keep from freezing was finally not the first thing on my mind. To finish up out Valentine's Day weekend my honey and I decided to stop by the Robinson Center Music Hall and listen to the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.
After seeing this full midi skirt circulating through a few YouTube videos, I decided I had to have it. I purchased this, and a green one just like it from, Choies.com. For those unfamiliar, Choies is an Asian based site so always remember the sizing is normally smaller than American sizes.
I paired the skirt with a black top, with sheer sleeves and a little spike detail on the shoulders.
He wore a pair of tweed trousers, a slim fitting Tommy Hilfiger dress shirt, and a red faux leather tie from Urban Outfitters.
Enjoy!

All of the Lights!
As I am still learning the ropes here in Arkansas, I wanted show my honey a good time while he was visiting this weekend. We enjoy doing different things, or more so things that we have never done before. We are on a quest to cross everything off our lists, and add things we would have never envisioned.
To celebrate the first full moon of the lunar calendar, Little Rock hosts an annual Lantern Festival. Many different countries were represented with food, drinks, and music to aid the celebration. A lantern release was done into the lake within the river and a tent housed a dance party for those willing to let their hair down.
Now, I myself wasn't festival ready as far as my outfit it concerned as we went to a pretty fancy restaurant right before. However, I will still show what we wore. lol
I wore an oriental shift dress from Asos, with a pair of thigh high boots I ordered from urbanog.com. He wore pair of mustard chinos, with a button down, and a navy jacket.
Enjoy!

Cleaning House
Valentine's Day has come and gone and all you can do is look at the empty dessert boxes and your full belly. Yep, it's time to clean house. I challenge you, my dear friend, to eat clean for the next four weeks. If not for yourself and your health, do it for your future and that crop top you've been dying to wear.
For the next four weeks I will - and I think you should as well - remove the following from my diet.
1. Processed Foods( No microwave usage unless it is all natural popcorn.) 2. Soda and other sugary drinks 3. Beer 4. Liquor (Except on weekends and only when on the rocks or with tonic. No soda or juice mixers.) 5. Sweets (Except a little something on Saturday if craving it.) 6. Beef (Pork was gone a long time ago) 7. White carbs (Only wheat and whole wheat) 8. Fried foods
See, that's not so bad! You can do it, too! At the end I will show the changes occurred with my body, if any, and declare if I will continue on this cleansing journey. I would also like to see your transformations at the end of the fourth week. So make sure you document it!
These are a few items I bought yesterday as well as my breakfast and part of my lunch.
Best Always, -S.

Weekend of Love
My, my, did I have an eventful weekend! Not only did I get to spend time with my honey, I was also able to have some fun with friends I don't get to see often.
With all the excitement buzzing around, I never got a chance to really document my outfits. Please forgive me on that; however, I am going to post the few I did take. Oh, and o dyed my hair!
Also, I was able to start on my vanity this past weekend, Whoop whoop! The beginning stages of that are below as well. Everything was found at the thrift store except the fabric chair and the table.
Best Always, -S.

Cold, Cold, go away!
Ugh...I'm so tired of it!
Okay, I'm sorry for throwing a temper tantrum but geez...how much more of this are we going to have to endure?! To battle the everlasting cold today, I decided to channel my inner Russian.
I wore brown leather, knee high boots; a pleaded skirt from the thrift store; a wool, cream sweater; and a fur scarf.
Best Always, -S.

OOTD 2/9/14!
So would you guys believe me if I said I have not found a way to take a good picture of myself in my new home. Lol My set up is changed around and I am still looking for that sweet spot!
But I wanted to show you guys my plaid pants, so I worked something out! I purchased these plaid pants from a store back home in Virginia that is only in the DMV area called Olive Ole' and paired it with this oversized grey sweater from XXI.
Because of the tapered and cropped fit of the pant I paired them with some cut out ankle booties. Because of the brisk weather I wore layered my fur vest with my leather jacket.
Enjoy!

Beauty Tip of the Week
With us being 1 full month into the new year, I can't help but wonder how many people have thrown in the towel on their New Year's Resolutions? It's okay, you don't have to raise your hand...this is a judge free zone. For those who have slipped off track this post is just for you! This week’s beauty tip is going to focus on a better diet, or lifestyle change as I like to call it! The biggest beauty tip of them all. Your body is not going to produce what you want (i.e. long healthy hair, glowing skin, strong nails, etc.) If you don't take a look at what you are feeding it! So I am going to give you 5 quick tips that could help you change small things in your everyday eating habits that could potentially give you long term benefits.
Tip 1: WATER! WATER! WATER!
I know this seems so basic but it is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Drinking water keeps your body hydrated which can be noticed through your hair and skin, and most importantly it keeps toxins flowing out of your body which is what we want! If you are one of those "but i don't like water, it tastes like nothing" people, I have some suggestions for you as well. Lemon! Add lemon to your water at night before you go to bed to infuse your water for the next day. Gives is a little taste and the lemon also helps flush toxins out of your body as well.
Tip 2: Plan ahead
Make a meal list for the week, so when you go to the grocery store you buy what you need for that week which keeps those sneaky bags of chips, cookies, and cartons of ice cream out of your shopping cart. I am still addicted to Pinterest and I check daily for new recipes that I can add to my list. I plan out my dinner and lunches for the week and stick to it for the most part. I might sub my chicken and rice for chicken tacos because I always seem to have whole wheat tortillas laying around. It is a way to stay on track and it makes you think about what you buy before you just throw it in your bag!
Tip 3: Drop the doughnut, muffin, pastry...
With morning being one of the busiest times for most Americans we tend to grab the quickest thing we can find. We do not realize that in doing so, we are essentially eating a piece of cake for breakfast! The most important meal of the day. Sub that pastry for a bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruit and honey for your sweet fix. Leave the doughnut in the box and grab a green smoothie. You can even make it at night to aid in the grab in go process in the morning! I'll place a picture of my weekly smoothie prep at the end of this post. I place everything in small Ziploc bags and just pour the single size smoothie mix into my blender and walk out the door!
Tip 4: Don't focus on clearing your plate!
This is something I still struggle with daily! Growing up, I was forced to finish everything on my plate before I got up from the table and that mentality has carried over into my life nearly 20 years later. You DO NOT have to clear your plate. Now I know that means you might waste food, if it's only you save it for later. I am not into wasting food or money so this forces on to look a portion size when making plates! Eat until satisfied, don't force food down when you stomach feels like it is about to burst.
Tip 5: Eat Clean
Clean eating focuses on eating for whole foods. Getting rid of processed and bleach foods and eating less fast/restaurant prepared foods. It is ALL about knowing about what is going into your body. I started about a year ago now focusing on ingredients. If you follow the blog, you might know that I started on this lifestyle change almost 5 years ago and every few months I make changes this, being the most recent. I attempt to cook as often as possible including lunch. I don't go to my jobs cafeteria or grab something quick, this ties into Tip 3, I plan ahead. I try to only allow myself 1 meal out a week, which is normally Friday. I try to purchase as many organic products as my little pockets will allow and go for whole wheat/grain options whenever pasta, bread, or rice are on the menu. I try to use as many fresh ingredients as possible when cooking to keep from having to worry about things being processed. Start small! Maybe focus on your snacks, sub a bag of chips for a handful or raw almonds or granola.
5 small tips that will make a huge impact on your body in the long run! What tips do you have for our followers to help as they tackle their personal lifestyle changes? Let us know!
Hope these help!

ManyMentors STEModel feature
Here at Mosaic Union we are all about creating a well rounded reading experience for our followers. As we strive to live up to our motto Fashion.Culture.Life.,we bring to you a Non Profit orgnaization by the name of Many Mentors out of Connecticut. For those new to our blog, I am an engineer by my job title but a lover of fashion all day long. I am very passionate about young women and minority numbers in STEM fields and this organization is as well.
When approached by co-founder and fellow Hampton Native Keisha Ashe, I leaped at the opportunity to participate in something such as this. Furthermore, I was even more excited to present it to you, our MU supporters. The ManyMentors program primarily serves middle and high school students located in the state of Connecticut. The organization currently implements onsite mentoring opportunities with local community partners, and is piloting mobile mentoring with a select number of mentor/mentee pairs.
This hard working duo (Keisha Ashe and Tiffany St. Bernard) are striving to reach out and create networks and partnerships with business and companies to create postitve mentor relationships with the students who are a part of this program. As a product of a HBCU, and many female/minority professional organizations such as Society of Women Engineers and National Society of Black Engineers college gave me the opportunity to cultivate mentor relationships with many professionals in my field and academia. Opportuniutes such as what these young ladies have created were not presented to me at such a young age, and I believe that in doing so lives will be changed.
A snippet from and article written on ManyMentors titled “Nonprofit Seeks Support for STEM Mentoring Initiative Focused on Women, Underserved” state the following:
The organization’s website notes that of the 20 fastest growing occupations projected for 2014, 15 of them require significant mathematics or science preparation.” The nonprofit hopes to make STEM mentoring more mainstream among middle and high school students, college and graduate students, as well as working professionals. As their slogan emphasizes, “If they never know, they will never go!” http://ctbythenumbers.info/2014/01/22/nonprofit-seeks-support-stem-mentoring-initiative-launched-uconn-students/
As a new initiative they began called STEModel was launched recently, and I was selected as the first installment of hopefully many features of young, vibrant, intelligent, and interesting role models for our young people to aspire to. STEModels is a digital campaign which is attempting to increase diversity in the media images of scientitsts, engineers, and other STEM professionals. Stop by their facebook page by searching for Many Mentors or stop by their website www.manymentors.org to see the wonderful work these young ladies have begun. Also, share this with everyone you know. Presenting our young ladies with another option one most don’t even consider will open doors for so many. Support their movement and donate to the work they are doing if you are able!
Enjoy! Kiara
Cupid's Day Outfit Ideas!
Chocolate hearts, dozens of roses, white doves, dinner and wine are on the minds of couples all over the place. Okay, maybe not so much, but they are trying to figure out what to do on this day of love.
As we brainstorm date night ideas for the quickly approaching Valentine's Day I planned out a few outfit ideas that to help you ladies, and my indecisive self out to make things just a little easier.
The first is a simple black body-con dress. Paired with a fur vest and a pair of black booties this outfit can take you from a fancy dinner downtown to a bar amongst all the love-struck couples. I chose a chunky necklace as an accent for this outfit to still give the look a touch of flare if you decide to remove the vest.
The second outfit is for the most casual Valentine's Day date. I chose a pair of boyfriend jeans as the focal point. Paired with a simple chiffon blouse and a fitted black blazer this outfit is simple, yet chic. This could be worn to dinner, happy hour, or even a night of live music. To keep with the minimalist feel of the look, I chose a pair of simple sole sandals to complete the outfit.
I am personally a dress person, and saw this cute skater dress and decided to create a look around it. I chose this black and gold dress and a pair of black and nude chunky platform sandals. With the pattern of the dress being the focal point, I wanted to keep the accessories simple. Just a nice gold watch and a red lip to tie everything together.
The last look is another one of my favorites and probably with the way the hawk has been out this winter, a very practical one. I chose another focal piece, which were the blue and white tapered floral trousers. To keep the look semi androgynous I selected black and white blouse. With such a tapered pant, I selected a pump like shoe to elongate the leg and keep the lines fluid. For outerwear I selected a wide lapel trench and would probably wear a wide brim hat to complete this fashion forward look. Perfect for a Valentine's night out around town.
Which look is your favorite?!? Let us know, and tag us in your looks on Valentine's day at #MosaicUnion!
Enjoy! Kiara
