“do you guys think we did something wrong?”
your crew sat anxiously in the meeting room of the polar tang. a few minutes ago, your captain’s voice spoke through the submarines intercom, ordering your crew to summon for a random meeting.
you shook in your seat, violently tapping your feet on the steel floor, not caring about noise it made.
you look across from you to see shachi’s complexion being paler than a ghosts, making you swear you could see right through him.
bepo sat at the head of the table to your left, and although he was law’s right-hand-man, he was bitting his nails so quickly he was close to chewing his paws off.
“i don’t know, penguin, did you do something to piss him off again?”
you question the man shakily, who was currently hanging onto your right arm, pleading up at you as if you had the answers.
penguin blinked, then you watched him narrow his eyes as he tried to wrack his brain through every interaction he has had with law since our last meeting.
you take a deep breath in attempts to slow your racing heart.
we are definitely fish food tonight.
“thanks for meeting, everyone.”
your eyes widened as you heard your captains voice coming through the door behind you.
everyone froze, not daring to even breathe.
the only thing you could hear was the commanding footsteps getting closer to your seat.
why wasn’t he heading to the other head of the table?
was it me who did something wrong?
on the table in front of you, you could see his shadow growing bigger and bigger. your whole body twitched as he stopped in place, feeling his body heat radiating on your back.
as you slowly began to turn to look at him, you stop halfway to see law pushing penguins chair away from you, causing him to drop your arm.
you look at penguin, who was looking back at you with the same confusion.
turning the rest of the way, you look up to see law looking down at you with an unreadable expression.
before random apologies began to spill out of your mouth, he walked up to the table to stand where penguins chair just was, then reached into his coat to pull out a map.
he threw the map down onto the table, and began to look around at everyone.
you jolted as your felt your chair slightly shake, looking over your left shoulder to see law’s hand holding onto the top of it.
you turn back to see him looking down at the map in front of him, holding it open with his other hand.
“what’s wrong with you guys? i just wanted your opinions on our next route.”
the sound of a collective sigh of relief filled your ears.
though the meeting only lasted five minutes, with everyone just agreeing with whatever law said, the whole crew was drained from anticipation. law noticed this and allowed everyone to take the night off from cleaning duty.
since law left the meeting room, everyone has remained sitting, not having the energy to move an inch.
“i thought he was actually going to rip my heart out.”
you groaned as you laid your head down on the table, feeling tired enough to fall asleep.
“i thought he was going to pounce on you.”
you heard ikkaku snicker, which made the rest of the crew laugh.
you lazily turned to look at her, not fully processing her words.
she smirked down at you, and playfully began to pet your hair.
“i mean, talk about possessive! it’s like he’s not even trying to hide it!”
you felt your face heat up, heart racing in your chest.
“what are you talking about?”
“how he pushed away my chair to be right next to you.”
penguin added, playfully wiggling his eyebrows at you.
“or how he held onto your chair for the whole meeting, i was seriously about to burst out laughing!”
ikakku sang out enthusiastically as she hugged herself.
you sighed, covering your face with your hands.
the crew has been bugging you about law’s imaginary crush on you for months, using every little interaction as evidence to support it. you have learned to tune them out, and came to the simple conclusion that they are bored.
they will forget about it eventually.
don’t get your hopes up over nothing.
the next morning, you felt the enthusiasm in the air as your crew finally got a full nights rest.
you walked in the dining room to see everyone fighting each other for second helpings of breakfast, knowing damn well there’s enough for thirds.
you smile to yourself, and manage to squeeze yourself into a seat.
“you did not fight off 10 guys, we we’re all there, you idiot.”
you laugh as you hear another one of shachi’s overly enthusiastic retellings of a mission.
“y-yeah i did! it was when you guys left!”
before you got the chance to call him on his bluff, you saw a mug of coffee being placed in front of you. looking up, you see law looking down at you tiredly.
he wasn’t wearing his hat, so you could see how disheveled his bedhead was. though, the way his loose curls wrapped around his features made him look unreal. you guessed that he woke up late and didn’t have the time to get fully ready.
now there’s a sight i want to wake up to each morning.
“two creams, two sugars.”
he spoke confidently, and you swore you saw the corner of his mouth twitch up before he promptly took his seat at the table, sipping his own coffee.
you froze, staring at the mug in front of you. you had no idea that he memorized how you took your coffee. your heart felt as though it was going to break out of your chest as you quickly brought your own mug to your mouth, in attempts to hide the smile crawling up your face.
although you knew that this was a simple small gesture with no feelings behind it, that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t enjoy it.
suddenly, you hear someone shooting up from their seat.
“why did you only make her coffee!?”
penguin yelled. you internally panicked, not knowing how far he was going to question him.
you weren’t ready to hear him say that he didn’t like you in that way, not yet.
you look over at law and see his jaw slightly clench before quickly regaining his composure.
“there was only enough for two, throw on another pot if you want some.”
you turn to look at penguin, and when he looks back, you teasingly stick out your tongue at him.
he furrows his brows together and frowns at you, then points an accusatory finger in your face.
“he’s just doing this because he li-”
“OKAY! i’ll make another pot, just sit down!”
ikkaku screams before jumping out of her seat and running into the kitchen.
the rest of your crew laughs it off and continues eating their food, while you fight the urge to throw yours back up.
from the corner of your eye, you see law frozen in place. his mug is lifted halfway to his mouth, and he is staring down at his plate like it personally offended him.
did he realize what penguin was about to say?
im actually screwed this time.
you finished your daily chores a lot faster than you normally did. even if you tried to rest, the only thing you could see was the face law was making at breakfast. although you didn’t do anything wrong, you knew that it would somehow come around to get you.
you thought of all the worst case scenarios, like getting kicked off the crew if he found out you had feelings for him, or him flat out ignoring you until it got you to leave the crew yourself. the spiral you were going down was making you dizzy.
with this in mind, you decided to rush down to the submarines library to engulf yourself into a book until you passed out from exhaustion. fairytales, comic books, academic literature; who cares!
you quickly took that back when you grabbed the first thing you could on the bookshelf, and sat down to realize it was a book about anatomy. sighing, you flipped it open to the first page anyway and began to read.
an hour went by in a flash, until you heard the sound of the door opening. looking up, you see law make his way into the library. you felt your chest tighten as your clutched onto your anatomy book for help.
you say through a forced smile, hoping you were doing a better job at hiding your panic than you thought you were.
he meets your gaze, and gives you a light nod before crossing his arms with a stern expression. he was wearing his white lab coat, which was too tight on his arms; not that you were complaining. along with glasses, that he only ever wore while he was reading, you rarely got to see him in them. you wondered if you were a saint in your past life to be able to enjoy this view.
he looks down at the book your reading, then back up at you.
“were my anatomy lessons not enough?”
you swallowed down your perversions and looked down at the floor in shame.
“it’s not that, i was just bored… captain.”
he hummed in understanding, then walked up to the couch you were on, taking a seat beside you. he crossed his legs when he sat down, then rested his arm on the top of the couch.
“mind if i talk to you for a minute?”
you nodded, not bothering to remember the page you were on while promptly closing the book and placing it on your lap. you shivered as if the anxiety froze your bloodstream as it coursed through your viens.
after watching him intently, he paused for a moment before speaking softly.
“are you alright? you have been avoiding me since breakfast.”
your eyes involuntarily widened in shock, not expecting him to be so direct. in all honesty, you were trying to avoid him, as well as anyone else for that matter. you were worried that all of your feelings were just plastered on your face, like a big neon sign, and if anyone got too close you would be found out.
you went so long pushing down these feelings you had for him, and you’re crew saying that he liked you made it so much harder to ignore. unknowingly, you were holding onto hope that his feelings were reciprocated, and it was slowly eating away at your sanity.
“i was a little worried…”
you sighed and stared down at your lap, trying to think up a lie you could tell him so that he would leave you alone.
“about what penguin was implying?”
you froze, the silence of the room became overwhelming while slowly looking up to meet his gaze. to my shock, his cheeks were dusted pink. his eyes widened slightly as he tried to read my expression, and his brows were furrowed, but he didn’t look angry; he looked anxious.
you have never seen him like this before, your throat dried up as a million questions ran through your mind, not being able to take your eyes off him.
“yes… are you upset with me?”
he narrowed his eyes at you in confusion, shaking his head.
“why would i be mad at you? you weren’t the one trying to piss me off.”
you felt your mind go blank as you suddenly stood up from your seat, no longer be able to look at him.
“it was all one big understanding, don’t worry about it.”
you abruptly turned and practically ran towards the door of the library.
“hold on, i wasn’t done talking to you!”
before you could care about getting thrown out of the crew, you booked it to your room.
the next day went by in a haze, barely being able to recall anything that had happened. you felt trapped inside your mind, being retold every interaction you’ve had with law without rose coloured glasses. your relationship has always been captain and crewmen, boss and subordinate, the only one who made it complicated was you. taking his acts of kindness as flirting, or his embarrassment as affection, the shame made you feel like running away and changing your name.
you curled up in your bed, looking at the sea life through your porthole window.
you heard a gentle knock on your bedroom door thinking it was ikkaku, you didn’t move.
you heard the door close, and you waited for her to start taking.
instead, you heard someone clear their throat.
you whipped around to see law standing in your room, looking at you cautiously as he seemed to be catching his breath. he was wearing a white tank top, giving you a full display of his arm tattoos, as well as his chest one poking out the top of the neckline. he was also wearing sweatpants that had the same design as his hat, making your face start to heat up.
anxiously, you quickly scrambled out of your bed to stand in front of him, although he looked casual, he was still your captain; and you needed to keep that in mind.
“sorry, i thought you were-”
you suddenly heard him sigh, then bring his hands to his face.
“you’re screwing with me.”
you close your open mouth, watching him with the same confusion. this is the first time you heard him say the word ‘screwing’.
he then groaned, rubbing his face. his childishness made you want to laugh, but you used every face muscle you had to hold it in.
“first they tell me you like me, then you practically run away when i try to talk to you about it, and now i can’t sleep.”
he then drops his hands from his face, searching your face for a solution. his cheeks were the same shade of pink as they were in the library, making you feel the same pang in your chest.
you clasped your hands on your mouth as he stared at you wide-eyed, and you wanted nothing more for the floor to swallow you whole and send you to hell where you belong.
you dropped your hands with a sigh, watching your feet.
“i’m sorry, captain. i promise that i can keep my feelings away from my work, if you would still have me on your crew.”
you paused, and when you heard no response, your throat tightened as you continued.
“i’m sorry for running away yesterday, when you said that my feelings pissed you off, i-”
“that’s not what i meant.”
you were brought back down to earth when you felt him grabbing your shoulders. you didn’t even hear him walk up to you.
you looked up at him to see his eyes boring down at you, trying to tell you something you couldn’t understand. he squeezed you as his mouth opened.
“i was pissed off that penguin tried to tell you before i could.”
your breath practically got sucked out of your lungs at his words as you narrowed your eyes, blinking up at him in confusion.
“you… you actually… what!?”
you yell, causing him to jolt and cover your mouth with his hand.
you froze as you felt his skin come in contact with yours, this wasn’t the first time, but it felt more intimate and intense than it ever has. the warmth made you feel weak in your knees.
if only he had that lab coat and glasses on right now…
you heard him sigh as he closed his eyes and let go of your mouth, he then leaned down and placed his head on your shoulder. the contact was separated by his hand, but that did not save you from feeling like you had just been electrocuted.
“i had only just found out that you liked me back, but i didn’t want to abuse my role as captain by pushing my feelings onto you.”
he spoke into you, you felt his breath tickle your neck as he squeezed you tighter.
“i was going to wait until you came to me, but i couldn’t hold back any longer.”
his raw honesty made his voice sound gentle, a softness that you had never heard before.
“then penguin had to go ahead and say that… i thought my chance was gone.”
you felt yourself begin to smile, the absurdity of everything causing you to break out in laughter. penguin will freak out when he realizes he succeeded ar being a wingman, even if it was unsolicited.
he lifted his head to look at you, smiling back down at you. the sight almost knocked the wind out of you, the way his smile tugged at his lips, and how it made his eyes soften, gave you a rush of confidence.
you brought your hands to his face, looking down at his lips, then back to his eyes. before he could give you the ‘okay’, he gently pulled you in by your shoulders and kissed you.
you tensed up at first, then slowly relaxed your shoulders and melted into it. his lips were softer than you would’ve ever imagined, already being able to tell you would crave them like a drug. when he pulled away, you smiled up at him.
“permission to throw penguin into the sea?”
law chuckled, smirking down at you before wrapping his arms around you. you felt his shoulders drop as he sighed in relief.
