‘Groovin’ In a Tomb’ - Residential Interiors, Nov/Dec 1978
The King of Grease (Allen Carr) came to the Queen of Opulence (Phyllis Morris) with one request: that a one-time screening room, subsequently a storage room, be metamorphosed into the first ‘egyptian disco’ ever built in a home. This totally flamboyant, nearly authentic tomb was produced by Phyllis Morris and her design director Stephen Reiman, working out of their Los Angeles office. The tomb is entered through a bronze verdigris door, embellished with an egyptian symbol of life. Deeper into the space, one comes upon a copper-mirrored disco which is totally submerged in splendor and decadence. The copper metal dance floor has recessed lighting which alternates with the vibrational changes of the music through the miracle of audiovisual, computerized technology. The lighting picks up the accenting jeweled colors of the luxurious satin pillows, which play against the background of undulating metallic copper walls, handwoven metallic copper banquettes, copper and gold palm trees. Looking up, one is mesmerized by the ceiling of bronzed, inverted pyramids of infinity lighting. Showcased over one of the mini-bars, under lock and key, is an outstanding collection of Egyptian art.
‘GNOS’ Karaoke Rooms - designed by Atsushi Sato, located in Shiba Minato-Ku, Tokyo (year unknown)
“GNOS, situated in a business district of Tamachi, Tokyo, provides 25 karaoke rooms which are designed upon different concepts. For a customers who want to relax by taking off their shoes, a Japanese style room or a room with a small bed and sofas are provided. If customers wish to sing like a professional, standing on a stage for the audience, they can use a room with a stage and a lighting system. For those who want to enjoy singing in a bathroom, a room with a Jacuzzi was planned. It was however not realized for some reason.”
