Joseph-Désiré Court (French, 1797-1865), Death of Hippolytus
Banished by Theseus based on Phaedrus's slander, Hippolytus met his death when his chariot was attacked by a sea monster.
This painting, measuring 35 x 46.5 cm, is known only through the sketch in the Musée Fabre in Montpellier; the location of the official third-year submission is unknown.
The original, exhibited in Rome in April 1825, was sent to Paris on May 16th of that year for its exhibition at the École des Beaux-Arts in October, and subsequently at the Salon of 1827. Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, purchased it in 1851 for 400 francs.
