Brand New’s “The Devil & God” Song & Album Facts
The two singles released from the album were “Jesus Christ” and “Sowing Season.”
The album actually had two producers originally, but due to time constraints and lack of financial resources, Brand New recruited a new producer: Mike Sapone.
Mike Sapone worked with the band on their first album as well, and frontman Lacey stated that Sapone was like a band member.
While writing the album, the band members seemed to be plagued with death and illness among their families and friends.
The album was recorded in the basement of Sapone’s house.
All lyrics on the album were written by Lacey with the exception of “Handcuffs,” which were written by Vincent Accardi.
“Degausser” and “Sowing Season” were written and composed simultaneously by the band as a whole.
The second verse of “Sowing Season” is inspired by the Rudyard Kipling poem, “If.”
The title “Sowing Season” is a reference to a Stephen King novel.
“Limousine” is about a seven-year-old girl who died. The girl was from the band’s hometown.
The album’s name - “The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Me” - came from Lacey’s discussion with a friend who suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The album cover is from an art piece, “Untitled 44,” that the band saw at an art show in New York City.
A “Degausser” is a device that de-magnetizes an object.
The “Degausser” lyric, “Take apart the demon in the attic to the left” was taken from a song by Roky Erikson.
“Luca” is about a gang. The lyrics discuss the gang needing to kill a member by cementing his feet and throwing him into a lake so they can find another member who can do the job better.
