do you think that people who want to be intersex allies should stop making jokes about penis size?

short answer: yeah, probably.

long answer: this is not really something that i personally feel called to spend a ton of energy going around confronting people every single time i see a joke because it just really does not feel at all worth my time. but i think it is something people should be thinking about a little deeper than a lot of people are right now. because all the jokes do add up to create a social environment where it's understood that micropenises are shameful.

and i can't find the link right now, but there was an article published in some bioethics journal several years ago evaluating doctor perspectives on what kinds of intersex surgeries are "medically necessary" or not. and one of the common arguments that they saw doctors making to parents is that they would argue that infant surgery was medically necessary not because of anatomical function reasons, but for the "psychosocial wellbeing" of the child, because without intervention, the child would face shame for their penis size as they got older, and that would be bad for the self esteem of the child. and like there's a lot of bullshit to unpack in that logic around medicalization there, but i think that's a pretty clear example of how societal norms around penis size + compulsory dyadism escalate into causing direct violence towards intersex people.

so i think it really is that deep and that it is worth taking seriously as reflection of all these hundreds of ways that people do reinforce the sex binary without even thinking about it.

"Do you want trans men to be treated like a different kind of men????" Hmmmm yea. They have uteruses and vaginas so they need different medical care. They also have high rates of sexual abuse and there's no laws in place of protecting trans men being physically abused. Like yea, we do need them to be treated like a different kind of men because they are a different kind of man.

it's not an option between "treat trans men like cis men" or "treat trans men like a different kind of man" because it's not something we actually get to choose.

trans men are already treated like a different kind of man. not necessarily in every single situation every, because things vary a lot person to person. but for all the reasons listed above; trans men and cis men have statistically important demographic differences because of our positions in patriarchy.

the choice is whether or not we ignore that reality and thus ignore the suffering and oppression of a marginalized gender, or do we recognize that reality and act according as feminists?

Had a thought that Grace technically never used reverse translation for Rocky, and Rocky understood him without a translator because he basically learned the language himself.

And you know all those jokes and headcanons about Rocky swearing every other word like any self-respecting engineer would, right? And Grace most likely did enter all those words into the translator, but replaced them with softer censored equivalents because he himself doesn’t really swear so the idea that someone might be talking to him in profanity every other sentence probably never even crossed his mind.

Now imagine this. They finally arrive to Erid. Grace desperately wants to make a good first impression, so he spends days hunched over his laptop, painstakingly assembling a greeting speech out of fragments from Rocky’s recordings.

And the resulting first contact speech sounds… bad. Like really bad. He turns the laptop toward the delegation looking unbelievably proud of himself. Presses play. And the computer proceeds to unleash a magnificent torrent of multilayered alien profanity stitched together from fragments of Rocky’s voice. Grace has absolutely no idea.

Rocky watched all of these preparations in silence the entire time, making those sly whistling noises that could absolutely be interpreted as laughter. Rocky's proud.

Meanwhile the Eridians are just thinking: "Yep. Okay. This leaky space blob really did spend years with our Rocky."

Just a point of historical clarification though, degeneration theory is much older than nazism: it originated in Enlightenment philosophical theories about society and nature, with some significant points of crystallization in the late 18th century by Immanuel Kant, mid-19th century by Benedict Morel, and by Max Nordau in 1892.

The Nazis were a PRODUCT of the prestige philosophy that believed in racial degeneration, the ideas that led to genocide were current throughout Europe and the Americas and were used to justify colonial genocides throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

I think it’s important to understand how deeply rooted this is in European philosophy and social theory because it helps counter the idea that Nazism was some kind of unique aberration. If we recognize the patterns that gave rise to it we have a better chance of responding effectively to those patterns

Imagine a newly-arrived-to-Erid Grace, sealed in a small oxygenated observation room, lying asleep on a cushioned platform. So far, Rocky has been the only Eridian bold enough to put on a xenonite suit and join Grace in the room; other Eridian scientists are gathered just outside, listening to the alien shifting about -- in its sleep!!! -- and occasionally mumbling.

A particularly pessimistic and irritating Eridian is pontificating to the others, insisting on the highest degree of caution when interacting with the alien in any way, even if that comes at the sacrifice of speed in treating the alien's ailments. Rocky is furious at the implication of "even if that comes at the sacrifice of the alien, period", but silent, unwilling to express his counterargument at full volume and risk waking Grace. Still, he is almost vibrating with anger where he sits on the makeshift 'human-style' bed beside his friend.

"This creature moves about even when supposedly at rest! It's unnatural! Perhaps Rocky-hero only survived the journey here at all because he was safely on the other side of a barrier of xenonite and ammonia, out of this creature's reach. Who knows what violent urges and instincts are contained within that bizarre body?"

The collective attention of the gathered Eridians shifts to focus in on Grace's slumbering form.

As if on cue, Grace rolls onto his side, still snoozing away, and cuddles his whole body in a curve around Rocky's, in a shockingly-close mimicry of a parent [Eridian-cat-equivalent] curling around its [Eridian-kitten-equivalent].

Rocky is quite annoyed when the resulting chorus of [Eridian-"awww"-equivalent] IS enough to finally wake his human friend from his much-needed rest.

I'm not upset but I do want people to understand. do you think assigning a label associated with feminine features, hairlessness, skinniness/lack of muscle tone, and high pitched voices is something that most trans men would feel comfortable being associated with? why or why not?

of COURSE there are trans men who don't mind it, or trans men who actively enjoy being called a twink. but I am not hairless by choice. I WANT fat and muscles and body hair and a deep voice. and a lot of trans men that get called twinks DO HAVE THESE THINGS, yet they get called "twink" anyway. why do you think that might be?

it's okay if you've done this in the past. maybe just check in before you call your friend or acquaintance something with so many specific, potentially disheartening associations!

I wonder if the inverse occurs with trans women getting called "butch" too. because there are many wonderful butch trans women!!! but if you call trans women "butches" for traits like short hair or body hair despite otherwise feminine presentation, maybe think about why that is? is she really a butch? or is that just her body? just ask first!

nonbinary people too. are they really "masc presenting" or is that just their body? are they really "fem presenting" or is that just their body? let's all try to be a bit more cognisant of the language we use to describe the trans people in our lives, yeah? [: it's worth thinking about. don't worry yourself into a hole about it, of course! but it's something to check every now and then.

tumblr users will proudly admit that they refuse to reblog from artists who put a little "reblogs > likes" on their art posts "out of spite" and then wonder why artists are leaving.

tumblr doesn't have an algorithm. a significant portion of this website doesn't check tags, they just follow people. the main way for artists to get recognition for their work is through reblogs.

reblog culture is dying and it's killing art communities.

if you like having artists on this platform you need to reblog the art posts that you like. when you don't artists feel like there's no point in posting their art here.... so they don't. they leave or they stop drawing/writing/etc.

so, if you like artists being on this platform you need to reblog their posts.

also bonus points if you add a little "I love this!" comment in the tags. it's encouraging to artists and tells them that their work is appreciated. it doesn't have to be complicated. it can even be a key smash. artists like creating more when they feel like they're supported for doing it.

and then people who don't routinely make or post art will say "well you should just make art for your own enjoyment!"

it doesn't work that way. people like hearing positive feedback on their artwork. it gives you a hit of dopamine that "oh this thing I worked hours on is enjoyed by people." it makes you feel like the effort was worth it.

you're taking artist's work for granted. you enjoy their work but don't want to support them. then you wonder why they leave the platform.
