Washoe was a common chimpanzee and the first ever non-human to learn how to communicate with sign language. She was raised as close to a human child as possible. One of her care workers, Kat, suffered a miscarriage and took a few weeks off work. When she returned, Washoe seemed upset that she had left her for a prolonged period of time. Kat signed that she was sorry and signedĀ āmy baby died,ā to which Washoe responded by signing the wordĀ ācryā before running her finger down Katās cheek, mimicking a tear. She then asked Kat for a hug. Washoe, who had lost her own babies, appeared to be sympathetic and understanding toward Katās own pain and loss.
My mother will tell you that I was a quiet child. I will tell you that I was born screaming and everyone looked away.

āi always cry when i grocery shop. lingering in the produce aisle, turning every fruit over in my hands to find the ones unmarked. i want to ask you if you can love damaged goods. i want to ask you if youāre scared of your father.ā

When Mitski said: āI spent all my teen-age years being obsessed with beauty, and Iām very resentful about it and Iām very angry, I had so much intelligence and energy and drive, and instead of using that to study more, or instead of pursuing something or going out and learning about or changing the world, I directed all that fire inward, and burnt myself up.ā I felt that.

āMaybe it is my fault for not being career-driven. The truth is, I always planned on dying young; a handful of pills for breakfast or getting too cozy with an electric outlet. It was close, but I made it and Iām glad, but once youāve given yourself to the thought of a short-lived life, once your future becomes a back up plan, getting by is the only thing that matters.ā
