Sorry to Bother You & Get Out
┈ ꒰ა I’m glad I didn’t watch this at a younger age because I wouldn’t have understood it if I did.
It’s deeply synonymous with Get Out—both frame an exaggerated scenario coming from a surreal, central world, with a theme of whiteness and control. It was bizarre, biting, and a hell of a brilliant watch. I loved it.
Considering that LaKeith Stanfield was in both, it makes sense. Cassius became a workaholic, blindly feeding into the system. The horses, to me, were symbolism of the grating reality of human labor abused in massive corporations—especially ones facing critical, world backlash. The protests solidified that.
Both start so ordinary with lightly showcasing flaws or the dedicated goals or purpose the protagonist has or wants, but so many warnings are given throughout other supporting characters.
In Get Out, despite Rod telling Chris not to go to Rose’s home, he went anyway because he’s polite and wants to be accepted. That’s an indirect form of subtle pressure from his girlfriend.
With Sorry to Bother You, Cassius follows along with what he’s told because he needs to get his bills paid. He needs stability. Desperation gets strong when it comes to finances, and when protests got stronger—including those closest to him and his coworkers—he became dependent on the a power caller lifestyle.
In both movies, the protagonists walk directly into their warnings—the system wins because of that. Their paths, in the end, became metaphors of compliance, resistance, and hard survival.
Sorry to Bother You? Well… “Don’t follow the white voice.”
And Get Out? “Don’t step a single foot in that house (white people home).”
When you know the systematic flaws—racial erasure/dehumanization, exploitation, and compliance culture—it’s foreseeable to watch the downfall because you saw it coming. Despite both being funny, you still understand why it’s done anyway and they learn their lesson in the end.
System’s never broken, it was built like this on purpose.
Holla, holla, holla, holla, HOLLAA!!!!
