photos from jiuzhaigou, china of wuhua hai, which translates as five flower lake. its colouration from mineral deposits and aquatic plant life, which can be seen thanks to its shallow waters, has also earned it the name five colour lake.
according to ancient legend, the lake, along with the 107 other such lakes in the region, were created when a goddess dropped and smashed a mirror her lover had given her into 108 pieces. (click pic or link for credit x, x, x, x, x, x, x)
closely related to sharks but with long, flat bodies and wing-like pectoral fins, mobula rays are ideally suited to swooping through the water - here off the gulf of california - yet seem equally at home in the air, so much so that they have earned the name “flying rays”. mobula rays can reach heights of more than two metres, remaining airborne for several seconds.
mobula rays are quite elusive and difficult to study, so biologists are not quite sure why they jump out of the water. theories vary from a means of communication, to a mating ritual (though both males and females jump), or as a way to shed themselves of parasites. they could also be jumping as a way of better corralling their pray, as seen with them swimming in a circular formation.
what is known about mobula rays is that they reach sexual maturity late and their investment in their offspring is more akin to mammals than other fishes, usually producing just a single pup after long pregnancies, all of which makes them extremely vulnerable to commercial fishing, especially as a species that likes to come together in large groups.
These mobula rays made us smile.
daniel stoupin, a doctoral candidate in marine biology at the university of queensland, has photographed a variety of coral species from the great barrier reef using full spectrum light to reveal fluorescent pigments that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. (see more at bioquest studios)
coral growth rates in the great barrier reef have plummeted 40 percent in the last 40 years, a result, according to a recent study, of increased ocean acidification. since the beginning of the industrial revolution, about one third of the carbon dioxide that has been released into the atmosphere as a result of fossil fuels has been absorbed by the oceans, where it in turn prevents coral from using a mineral called aragonite to make their calcified skeletons.
new modelling has also shown that if ocean waters continue to warm by even one degree, which most now see as unstoppable, the coverage of corals on the great barrier reef could decline to less than 10 percent, which is a level too low for the reef to mount a recovery.
further complicating matters for the coral is the plastic detritus left by humans which now litter the oceans and which the coral now consume. unable to expel the plastic bits and thus take in nutrients, the coral slowly starve. a recent study found that each square kilometre of australia’s sea surface water is contaminated with approximately 4,000 pieces of tiny plastic.
These uniquely lit corals caught our eye, and the fact that we might lose them.
Erosion of the Great Barrier Reef tells a story of how our environment is changing at an unprecedented rate. Read more about how one of the most diverse (and beautiful) marine ecosystems is threatened by climate change.
Ceramic Reefs
Fragile and gorgeous like their real-life counter parts, these porcelain sculptures by artist and ocean activist Courtney Mattison draw attention to a precious ocean resource in danger.
Threatened by overfishing, coastal pollution, and climate change, just twenty-two of 6,000 coral species around the world are protected by the Endangered Species Act. A study just this week revealed that ocean acidification is slowing reef growth. And coral bleaching threatens the survival of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Coral plays a vital role in ocean ecosystems and biodiversity — one-quarter of all ocean species depend on them for food and shelter. And we in turn rely on these species for commerce and nutrition.
Mattison’s ongoing handmade porcelain series “Our Changing Seas,” intends to inspire ocean conservation. We want to see more art like Mattison’s especially if it means that the real life version inspiring it will be better protected.
