“Why not?” Diana asks, though she has a feeling she might know the answer.
She shrugged. “Because you don’t really want the answer.”
mamaxwatson:
Personally, she would have loved it if Tommy and Alex were back as well. Over time she had really come to like Violet despite their rough start, but Alex was her best friend, and she needed her here to be her simultaneously callous and supportive self right now, as selfish as she knew that was. “You care,” Sam says, somehow managing to turn herself into a therapist instead of her usual babbling self at least for the time being. “You don’t think that’s enough? That you’re enough?”
The sentiment that Sam expressed was appreciated, but the fact of the matter was that Violet didn’t believe in herself enough to be helpful to anyone else in her life. Her ability to care about the people around her was compromised by her need to put her child first. “I care, yeah. But I’ve never been enough for anyone. I’m not even enough for my own son.”
itsharland:
“Yeah.” Another wave of guilt swamps her, and she looks down at her hands. She wasn’t good for Thomas - for anyone - but she knew how it felt to be left alone. “You missed a question, though.”
Violet shook her head. “I didn’t miss it. I just didn’t want to answer it.”
mamaxwatson:
“That’s very true,” she agrees, her expression soft as she comforts Violet. “I think I am, at least about this. Learning how to deal with people caring about you… it’s hard. We’ve both been there,” she says, gesturing between the two of them, “months ago, but you and Tommy are the first people she’s ever really had. Maybe she just doesn’t understand it yet. But she will.”
Violet knows, deep down, that Sam is right. The truth was that she felt abandoned by her...what could she even call Diana? The brunette would probably balk at being referred to as her girlfriend, but they were certainly more than buddies. “I just wish that I knew what to say to make it all better for her. And I wish that Tommy was here. I know he’s off with Alex trying to save the day in England, but I’m afraid she’ll think he doesn’t care about her. She needs people to care right now.”
itsharland:
“…how are you? How’s Thomas?”
Her face hardens. “He misses you. He lost two of the three people he was used to seeing every day all at once. But Sam and Lip have been helping me with him.”
mamaxwatson:
“Something tells me we have similar problems,” she says, thinking about how Alex would love to make sure Nikki has an amply offensive vocabulary. She notices the sorrowing of Violet’s expression, though, and reaches out to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. “She’s gonna be okay, V. She’ll come back to you.”
She smirks, nodding. “Occupational hazard of being friends with rock stars and degenerates.” At the gesture, Violet’s hard exterior thaws just a bit. “I hope you’re right.”
itsharland:
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to talk about.”
“That makes two of us.”
mamaxwatson:
“You know, she’s gonna start talking soon.” Sam murmurs absently, looking down at Nikki as she plays with her toys on the mat. “We should probably invest in a swear jar, otherwise her first word is gonna be ‘shit.’”
“Don’t feel too bad about that,” Violet chuckled. “At least you guys try to keep the profanity away from her. I’m pretty sure Diana was trying to teach Thomas to say fuck.” Her eyes darken at the mention of the smaller girl, instantly cursing herself for bringing her up.
ofcaffeine:
Yeah, of course. Anything I can do to help.
Could you take him now? Like, right now? Because I want to go talk to Di but Pat is there too, and honestly I don’t want him anywhere near our son right now.
ofbackbone:
I know they’re coming back because I have faith in them. And I know you’re never going to do this alone because I’m always going to be here for you.
That was almost sweet, Parker.
itsharland:
Yeah, well, I shouldn’t be.
I know you’re just saying these things to push me away, and I’m not going to let you.
I’m made up of black coffee, untamed hair, and poorly suppressed anger.

ofcaffeine:
Can I do anything? Maybe take Thomas for a few hours so you can go see everyone?
That would actually be so helpful.
ofbackbone:
They’re coming back, Vi. And you will never, ever have to do any of this alone.
How could you possibly know that?
