moorside, virginia. 2014. three weeks after ethel byron — president and one of three members of the niche paranormal society of shelley hall high school — vanishes without a trace, a disturbing pattern emerges among her classmates. one by one, eight unrelated students are infected by an identical nightmare: following a ghostly white moth through the local woods to a decaying, old house that seems to watch over them with malice. their belief of being uniquely cursed changes when a meticulously hand-drawn poster of the very same "moth house" appears on the school bulletin board, accompanied by an invitation. driven by desperation and curiosity, all eight converge at the designated spot — sweetheart's bench, a well-known make out spot in woods behind shelley hall — on the appointed thursday night. their mutual shock is immediate; they are a fractured cross-section of the school's social hierarchy. the shared nightmare was not a coincidence, but the first move in a game they've been drafted into against their will: the investigation into ethel's disappearance — and the nature of the house that haunts them.
