This is a log of my taxidermy/vulture culture journey! I do my best to source my parts ethically and would never harm an animal that isn't invasive or already suffering past the point of being able to be helped.

Kinda debating clearing out this blog and reverting it back to a reservoir for bone cleaning and vulture culture educational post (or just converting it to a different blog entirely).

Kinda tired of just reblogging whatever shows up in the related tags and it feeling oh so repetitive.

Drawback will be this blog will be inactive often (I'll still be devoting my time to my various side blogs) and will eventually become repetitive periodically reblogging the same info posts.

Just, idk, truth be told I'm sadly not super active in the bone collecting scene due to ongoing and seemingly multiplying health issues. I barely have the energy to continue my full-time job, let alone having energy for part time endeavors and hobbies.

I'd like to hope that one day I can come back to be more active in the VC community, but with how I've been shrugged off and jerked around with doctors with little headway this past year, I'm feeling pretty defeated lately.

Anyway, I'm still mulling it over. Outside thoughts are welcome if you want to chime in. If not, thanks for reading💀

Alitalia is made entirely out of sustainably sourced parts. Mountain lion and turkey wings both secondhand and legally obtained. Her eagle face is 3D sculpted and printed, and her claws are replica Kodiak and polar bear. Spots hand painted with special dyes for fur.

Making a griffon like this is something I've been wanting to do when I get more skilled forever, do you have any sort of like tutorial or at least advice for how to get the face to look so perfect like that?

Finally got some nice pictures of Karma now that they're done! Did it turn out well? Absolutely not. I have created a derpy bastard that could be considered an abomination. Buuut, for a first try, and considering the fact that I used a frickin wall hanger for it, I think I did pretty good

Yes it is! I didn't intend for it to turn out this way, but I had bought a wall hanger pelt cause I didn't know what I was doing. A wall hanger is a skin that doesn't have its limbs, genital area, eyelids, or lower jaw anymore; so I had to really improvise and try to make it work. Traditional taxidermists would think it's an abomination, but I'm quite proud of it!!

had a lil bit of an existential crisis while working on skinning earlier

also unrelated note, how do yall deal with the lingering feeling of ick after finishing up with deads? im totally fine working on them, but for hours after no matter how well i clean myself up i feel like i cant touch food or itll be Contaminated

Also feel like I ought post this for the vulture culture enthusiasts, I have no dermestid beetles and can't bury things so I used my isopod powered composter to clean a mouse (caught in a trap my landlord left out :,(. )

And the isopods did amazing!

In just 2 weeks from a fresh mouse the bones were totally clean and the isopods made so many more babies.

Anyone else try isopods to clean bones? I'd love to hear about it!

Isopods definitely work if you don't have access to dermestids! The only thing to worry about is that they might also eat the bones, so you're not gonna get as nice of a skeleton out of them

So, a bit of a saga unfolded that lead to me buying this girl. My parents offered to buy some whole carcasses for me for my birthday, I just had to purchase them on a taxidermy forum my mom found. So I got myself a fox and two pigeons. Pigeons arrived fine, they're not the main character of this story; the fox is. The fox isn't shipped for a whole two months after ordering it so I was worried it was a scam. But then it shipped! And then it stayed in USPS purgatory for AN ENTIRE WEEK :D

Needless to say what I received was ✧˖°. soup ⋆˙⟡. Gross. Also felt shitty as hell cause it was supposed to be my present even if it was really late. So yeah I went and bought myself a DIFFERENT fox that was already skinned so there wouldn't be Any risk of soupage, and the skin was what I was wanting in the first place. And here she is! A beautiful lady with BEANS that I plan to mount!!

Things To Remember When Processing Your Own Pet

The physical elements of processing a pet are no different than those used for processing roadkill. However the emotional elements tend to be far greater and more taxing due to the time spent getting to know the animal while they were alive.

Because of this, processing pet remains is not for everyone within the Vulture Culture community. But for those looking to take that step, here's some advice:

Other than the time needed for decomposition to happen, there is no set time limit for how long it should take you to process your pet's remains. If you can't scrub or sort through all the bones in one sitting because the tears come on too fast, it's okay to take your time. If you put off checking the degreasing or whitening process because you just weren't ready to look your friend in the eye(sockets) again, it's okay to take your time.

There is no shame in grieving while you work. Your tears, sobs, and even screams are all testaments to your love for your once furry (or scaled) friend.

There are no rules on taking ritual actions. Light a candle or some incense. Play some music. Pray, sing or talk to your pet. Do whatever feels right in honouring your friend as you work with their remains.

If you lose pieces, don't be too hard on yourself. Think of how that lost tooth or bone can go on to aid something else in nature, sustaining life through death.
