It’s early in the evening when an unmarked, military style jeep makes it’s slow, deliberate way up the winding mountain road, and pulls to a stop outside the bases of Mountain Lab.
After a moment, a matronly woman steps out, stepping primly over the clumps of dirt and debris in her path. She’s followed by a younger, dark haired woman, holding a clipboard. The older woman walks purposefully forward, surveying the state of the buildings with something like a serene smile on her face. Her eyes, however, are sharp.
“…deplorable.” She keeps smiling. “Simply deplorable.”
Both women return to the jeep, which then drives slowly away.
Approximately an hour later, the intercom in both the RED and BLU bases clicks on.
“Attention Mercenaries of Mountain Lab.” The voice is calm, feminine, British. “You will no doubt be gratified to know that the absolutely abysmal state of this facility has been recognized by those of us at TF Industries.
You will also, I suspect, be gratified to know that your former Administrator is no longer in a position of authority over you. Marcus has been… let go. His lax policies have been a disservice to this base, and directly lead to the sad state we now find ourselves in. I have the honour of being assigned your Administrator in his place. You may call me Ms Bathory, and I’m sure we will all get along famously.
But now, that brings us to what should be done about this facility, and about all of you. My assistant and I have surveyed the premises, and we have come to one conclusion: to return Mountain Lab to a state of serviceability would be an expense well over and beyond the expected gain. Quite simply, it would be worth neither the company’s time nor money. As such, Mountain Lab is to be condemned.
But for you, my mercenaries, look at this as a… fresh start. Your continued service is valuable to us. Quite valuable. So you will all be reassigned, effective immediately. Please begin packing your things, tomorrow morning you will be conveyed by company van to a train station, from which you will be transported to your new… home. I suggest you pack lightly, and dress for warm, warm weather.”
With that, the intercom clicks off.
