“Han, dear could you maybe help over here?”
Hanzo peeked up from his latest mission report as he heard McCree’s slightly shaking voice. It seemed to come from the neighbor room and he furrowed his brows as he heard the sound of stumbling feet. What was happening over there?
He decided to let the report be and continue writing on it later today before he stood up to look after his boyfriend. Jesse had left Hanzo almost an hour ago, he noted as he glanced at the clock over the door in passing, to clean their bedroom. They had been on separate missions the whole week and hadn’t found time or energy to keep their room tidy. The exertions they had been forced to face had been too much for that.
“Jesse, is everything alright?” Hanzo was about to ask as he entered the room, but the words died on his tongue. The scene that played in front of his eyes was enough for an answer.
Hanzo struggled to keep the strong laughter that bubbled in his chest quiet as he looked at McCree, who seemed to be too big for the small chair he stood upon. His hands were clenched around a feather duster; he must have been busy cleaning the top of the two bookshelves that framed parts of the left wall. Hanzo was even more confused once he realized that McCree was tall enough to clean the bookshelf even without a chair.
“Jesse, what are you doing?”
Jesse turned his face around, his facial expression showing exactly the relief that must have shot through his body like an arrow.
“Hanzo, sugarplum, you’re here!”
Hanzo chuckled: “Of course I am here, you called me after all.”
A shaky laugh left McCree’s lips that didn’t arrive his eyes. It was obvious that he tried to calm himself more than he tried to make Hanzo laugh along.
Hanzo’s brows furrowed at that: it was unusual for McCree to show his nervousness to this extent.
Something really bad must have happened.
Hanzo tried to reassure his boyfriend with a calm smile.
“What are you doing up there, Jesse?” Hanzo asked softly as he stepped closer. His eyes met the worried gaze of his boyfriend, and Hanzo felt the urge to climb up the chair in order to hug Jesse and to tell him everything would be alright.
“Uhm, well, y’know…”
“Yes?”
Jesse glanced to the side, a hopeless attempt to escape Hanzo’s questioning eyes. He didn’t succeed.
“Jesse,” Hanzo whispered before he made a decision. His hand grasped firmly around the back of the chair before he hefted himself up onto it. A soft gasp left Jesse’s lips, and he dropped the feather duster he had been clasping tensely been clasping tensely.
“Well, that’s a tight squeeze up here,” Jesse noted as he locked eyes with Hanzo. The smug grin that crept on his face calmed Hanzo’s restless soul.
“I don’t think you’ve ever complained about that, my dearest,” Hanzo replied as he caught a hold around Jesse’s waist and inhaled his unique scent. He turned his head and He turned his head and rested it on Jesse’s shoulder to leave a soft to leave a soft kiss on his lower neck. An appreciative hum rumbled in his chest as he felt his boyfriend’s arms around his back.
“What is troubling you, my love?” Hanzo breathed against the sensitive skin in front of him and with a small smile, he recognized the goosebumps his low voice caused.
Jesse’s grip got stronger and his nose bumped against his boyfriend’s ear. His voice was slow and accent-heavy as he spoke: “Well hun, maybe I have a bit of a problem with…”
Hanzo raised his head from Jesse’s shoulder to look up at him in confusion. “A bit of a problem with what?”
Jesse’s facial expression became more and more troubled every second Hanzo stared at him, and the tip of his tongue nervously licked his bottom lip.
“Uhm..” he stumbled, averting his eyes away from his boyfriend. Hanzo wouldn’t let it rest though, and strengthened his grip around Jesse’s waist while his best to sound as gentle as possible.
“Yes?”
“There had been..” Jesse paused, his face lined with worry. It took a few seconds before Jesse seemed to overthink his reaction and instead of worry, a almost desperate desperation stepped at its place.
“Do you promise me not to laugh?” He asked in such a serious tone Hanzo rarely had witnessed in all the time they knew each other.
Hanzo nodded and his face was lined with confusion. “Of course I won’t laugh, Jesse.”
His boyfriend nodded slowly and took a deep breath before he looked down at them. “Uhm… I have a fear of spiders.”
Hanzo’s heart, which had been beating like he was running a marathon, abruptly stopped once he had processed the meaning behind Jesse’s words. He had expected anything but this. Jesse was afraid of spiders?
Well, Hanzo thought, and a small smile conquered his face, Jesse McCree seemed to harbor way more secrets than anyone could expect.
“Where is it?” he asked and gently stroked Jesse’s cheek. His boyfriend leaned into the touch and his eyelids sank down. With half-closed eyes, he mumbled: “On top of the bookshelf.”
Hanzo nodded, his hand slipped down from his boyfriend’s cheek, and he got down from the chair. Jesse gave him a tiny smile, which he returned with a bright one of his own. He would do his best for Jesse’s comfort.
Even if that meant he had to play spider-tamer.
The bookshelf was too high for Hanzo see the top off without a chair. Luckily, the couch was near the shelf, and it squealed in protest as Hanzo climbed on its armrest. It was a bit uneven, and Hanzo needed a moment to find his balance.
His hands grasped the rim of the shelf, and with searching eyes, he scanned the surface. In the first seconds, he didn’t see anything except for the very distinct line between the cleaned part and the dusty one Jesse hadn’t gotten to yet. But as he inspected the dirty part more precisely, he found the small culprit.
It was a very small spider, and it seemed to relax in the middle of its small web. Hanzo grimaced. He didn’t want to bother it but Jesse was more important now. He had to bring it outside. Plus the web.
He raised himself on tiptoes before he stretched out his hands. The long sleeves of his Gi stroked the uncleaned cupboard and caused Hanzo to quietly groan in annoyance. He didn’t want to wash it again.
At least it had been for a higher purpose, Hanzo reminded himself before he cupped his hands around the web and its resident.
“Found it,” he informed Jesse as he drew his hands back and chuckled as he heard the relieved sigh behind him. “It’s not that big.” Hanzo tried to calm Jesse, but it didn’t seem to work in the slightest.
Jesse’s voice was still lined with fear and a bit shaky as he answered. “Get that thing away from me, Han, I don’t care how big it is!”
Hanzo laughed softly when he looked at Jesse with tender and loving eyes.
“I will take it outside, alright?” he offered Jesse, who nodded carefully. His voice was a bit unsure as he responded, his eyes fixed on Hanzo’s hands.
“Will you take it far away?”
“Of course I will bring it outside,” Hanzo answered and drew his hands closer to his body, trying to underline his deep caring for his boyfriend. He would take good care of their little guest until he found a nice new home for it. His thoughts wandered to the little garden Ana had in the middle of the base. That would be a nice place, tea plants smelled amazing after all.
“Okay, okay I think I can deal with that. Thank you, Hanzo,” his boyfriend interrupted the trail of his thoughts, their eyes met and Hanzo’s breath hitched in the back of his throat.
Only Jesse could look at him like that. So honest, so beautiful, so loving.
His face had softened as well, as opposed to the expression of fear had been replaced by a soft smile that made the corners of his eyes crinkle in joy.
Hanzo’s heart clenched: Jesse was a beautiful man.
“Anytime, my love,” he replied almost breathless before he turned around, heading towards the door, Jesse’s tender eyes laying on his back.
