Baralai grew up in Bevelle, only knowing the life of Yevon; his grandparents were always present in the temple. For everything that happens in Bevelle, they will be in the same temple. All they preached was Yevon this or Yevon that, or talked down on the Al Bhed, calling them derogatory terms, kicking them out of the temples or in Bevelle instantly.
His father and mother were the same way, his father grew up with his parents. Baralai’s mother was also raised in the mindset of the Al Bhed being up to no good, keeping their home from any entry to the Al Bhed, even if one was injured. Five generations of Baralai’s family on both sides were pure Al Bhed haters and the ‘purest’ followers of Yevon.
However, Baralai didn’t see the way his family thought. Always wanting to lend a helping hand to another Al Bhed child, but he was always pulled away by his parents or grandparents. He was not allowed to associate with them and it made Baralai want to interact with them even more. Because he saw no reason why they were different from him. Sure, they wore strange clothes, spoke different, and used ‘forbidden’ machina.
Baralai met his first real Al Bhed friend when he disobeyed his family to join the Crusaders, into their elite force, the Crimson Squad. Gippal. It was at this time his suspicions were correct, Gippal was no different than he was, and without his family constantly shunning him away from the race; he got to see once and for all, that they weren’t anything like the people of Spira say.
His family was absolutely ecstatic when Baralai becomes the new Praetor for Yevon, renaming it to be New Yevon was strange for them, but they thought Baralai was finally seeing their rights. However, after they’d see Gippal show up sometimes, or even see that the D’jose temple was being “violated” by the Al Bhed, they were absolutely disgusted and demanded their son/grandson to do something about it.
Such a thing was not at all in Baralai’s mind, instead, he began dismissing them with his plans for the Al Bhed, once he gives his public apology to them, he plans to help them live among the people of Spira, for the children to be taught with the rest of the children. The Al Bhed had suffered enough and he was working with Gippal and Cid to accomplish this.
It got to that point where Baralai’s parents practically disown him, his grandparents constantly demanding he change his mind, but he does not listen. He’ll allow the elder Yevon monks that still hold the old ways to stay in the temple, but he plans to work on the new generation of kids, so that once the old is no longer; the new generation will be able to continue to live in peace with the Al Bhed. Right now, he could care less if his immediate family disown him; as Praetor, the entire world is his family to protect and teach, and that includes the Al Bhed.
