     THE   YOUNG   GIRL   FROM   THE   ROOKERY   falls   into   a   fit   of   coughs   ,   doubling   over   and   leaning   heavily   against   a   wall   with   a   hand   in   front   of   her   mouth   .   When   she   manages   to   calm   it   down   ,   she   moves   her   hand   from   her   mouth   and   wipes   it   on   her   dress   ---   an   alarming   red   stain   of   blood   now   on   the   old   dress   ---   then   wipes   her   mouth   with   a   shaky   ,   bandage   wrapped   hand   .

     “   I’M   fine   ---   I’m   fine   .   Really   .   ”   she   says   when   she   sees   someone   staring   at   her   .

     Laya O’Sullivan is a 17 year old who currently works in a match factory. Her health is failing but she stays positive, staying at the only job she’s has since she was 12.

     She has no powers and is a normal human as far as she’s aware. She’s wrong though; she can hear the dead. She doesn’t think it’s anything odd and figures her head’s messing with her due to her failing health.

     She lives in the rookery by herself and has sworn off getting married so she can stay independent in the eyes of the legal system.

Hey what’s sad is how abuse is so common with the rookery/street kids that they can casually talk about it without anyone getting concerned and how easily Petey mentioned how Jake’s bosses used to beat him. How Dani’s brothers abuse her and mistreat her and how her dad’s pretty much an alcoholic who doesn’t care that much about her wellbeing. 

I mean FUCK just look at what Garnock says about Jake’s life after peering into Jake’s memories :
