Food Banks across New Jersey are looking for donations!
https://moveforhunger.org/food-banks-across-new-jersey-looking-donations/
Did you know local food banks struggle during the late Winter and early Spring? With the holidays over, food pantries hit their second lowest donation time of the year behind summer.
Jennifer Johnson from Center for Food Action in Englewood said, “there’s a lot of folks living in our neighborhoods that are hungry”. In the cold, people retreat into their homes and are unlikely to think of donating to a food bank or run events to benefit them. Meanwhile, those living in poverty or on the edge are faced with the heat or eat dilemma.
During a time of low donations, supplies in food banks are slowly dwindling. Why not help them fill up pantries again? You don’t have to physically go to a food bank. You can donate online and over the phone. Donating money or grocery store gift cards allows the staff to purchase what is needed and also get the most for their money. If someone wants to donate food, Johnson suggests protein-filled foods like hearty soups or tuna fish.
Besides donation, you can also join us or get involved on social media with two hashtags: #sayno2hunger and #givelocally
“It always is really tough to find that balance and try to remind people this is a problem 365 days a year and to keep them engaged,” said Adrian Diaz of CUMAC in Paterson.

Elementary School Student grows food for those in Need

Helping others has always been important for an 11 year old student from Sunset Valley Elementary. This student makes it his goal to feed people in need.
Ian McKenna from Austin, Texas started a Giving Garden in order to send healthy fruits and vegetables home with children who are food insecure over the holidays.
Ian is receiving a grant from the City of Austin Sustainability Office for $2,000 for the Hacienda Community Giving Garden that he created in his old elementary school. He plans to get his initiative started all around the world to make an impact in other communities.
Not only has Ian created this garden, but he also plants at home from which he grows healthy foods and then donates the food to his local food bank.
Because of Ian’s project, the elementary school has been inspired to start moving toward zero waste, rainwater harvesting, and installing a new butterfly garden.
