It was freshman year of high school. I was sick with the flu so I was stuck at home. I’d been looking at lists of prog artists because at the time, I was still waiting for Tool to release a fifth album, and I needed something to tie me over. I had been introduced to such awesome bands as Soen, Karnivool, TesseracT... What’s this? Coheed and Cambria? I remembered them from a phase in elementary school when I’d listen to “Welcome Home” on repeat, but I hadn’t ventured farther. Their description said that not only did they work in concept albums, but that all of them were in the same series? And there were graphic novels?? I was hungry for more. I sought out a chronological order of their albums, leading me to The Afterman: Ascension. I was a year into learning how to play bass at the time, and Zach Cooper’s riffs and embellishments on Domino the Destitute instantly struck me. That paired with the artwork and story chapters accompanying each track, and I knew I’d found something special. Flash forward multiple cd and vinyl purchases, two concerts and numerous graphic novels later, and Coheed has shaped my life in innumerable ways. They’ve brought my brother and I even closer than before, been the soundtrack to many ups and downs, and inspired my own creative pursuits. They’ve pointed me to other amazing artists like The Mars Volta, Thank You Scientist, The Dear Hunter, and the larger modern prog and post-hardcore scenes.
