Calling all Upper-Grade & Art Teachers!

I now have to teach an 8/9 Art Class for another teacher while she teaches my kids Science. I think it’s a great trade-off, especially since Science isn’t really may thing. BUT I’ve never taught upper-grades like that AND I’ve never taught an Art class. I have NOTHING. And I need HEEELLLPPPPPPP :)

That is quite an undertaking if you don’t have a background in visual art.  A great place to start is the Art of Ed podcast and their website.  And I guess my big advice is process> product.  Stay away from the crafty and teach real skills. Read the journals, reach out to the other art teachers in your county, and don’t be afraid to try things :)  So much of art ed is stuck in the past, so don’t feel that you have to do projects or lessons just because they have always been done.

Making the Move

I have decided to move the blog to a personal website because I haven’t used Tumblr regularly in quite some time. Tumblr and everyone here helped me so much during my first few years of teaching.  The support was invaluable.  Now, I don’t have the same needs as I did during my first and second year, so I feel that it is time to move on.  I’ll be posting classroom happenings at www.mpinaire.com/theartclassroom  I hope that you will follow along!  I plan on leaving Teaching a Love of Art right here and may still post occasionally.

Third grade mural making made the paper! Loved this, and I think the kids did, too. They were excited to get their painted paper houses back to take home last week when we packed up all of our artwork.

A few pictures from our fourth Night of the Arts. It has taken me a good week to recover and post these (and I had a county wide art show to set up and put on last week, too), but I’m quite proud of this event. Each year it has become better and easier. I start preparing in January, and within a few hours on April 29th, my after school students and I have it all set up! We had more art activities this year, which went over well, and we had a grade level mural for the first time.  I think I’m going to do something like that each year. PTO donated refreshments and we even had fresh baked cookies from the culinary program at the high school. At the end of the night, our wonderful music teacher and I got a picture in front of the third grade mural.  She always does a fantastic job with the music performance.

Cute turtles make testing days much more fun.

I love these little turtles so much and so do my kindergartners.  This may just be the Night of the Arts project for kindergarten next year.  

This lesson took three days.  On the first, we mixed green paint and painted the paper plate. During the next class, we printed circles and traced the legs and head. We drew the eyes with oil pastel, cut out the pieces, and glued it all together using glue sponges during the last class.

Make-it, Take-it??

For the Night of the Arts at my elementary school, I like to have a few make-it, take-it art stations.  So far, I have bracelets (pipe cleaners and beads) and large paper with a painted design for students to color with crayons.  Do you all have any ideas for a simple art activity that can be done without a teacher/volunteer?

About a third of our third and fourth grade weaving projects are finished. Love all of the different patterns! We make the looms and weave for about two forty-five minute classes and then work on the drawing for two classes.

Then there’s this girl. Loves puppies more than anything and wanted to make her weaving into a puppy, so she did! One of my favorite things is when students come to me with their own ideas and figure out ways to make them work.

And we still use the yarn boxes to manage all of the yarn.  We usually have a ton of different colors out and have never had an major problems with the boxes. My first and second graders who are sewing get an arm’s length of yarn and the students who are weaving take more back to their seats.

Just the heavy duty UHU glue sticks. One thick layer and they’re still lasting through 3 printing sessions!

5th grade has been working on ceramics and weaving these last few weeks, which may be their final lessons as elementary artists. This is the first year I have taught more than the simple horizontal stripes with weaving, and I am so impressed with what they have created.

The looms are 8x5.5in.

Can’t believe you do all this.  Must be so much work, but they are wonderful!  Maybe I’ll do something like this... another year!

#arted teacher hack. Next time you need to cut a big sheet of paper (like bulletin board paper): 1) push 2 tables together but leave a small space. 2) line up where you want to cut on top of the space. 3) put you scissors in the space and cut! It’s similar to how fabric is cut at the fabric store.

Great tip and love the letters!  May do something similar for our Night of the Arts.  Hope your show goes well!

Part 1 of functional object ceramic pieces. Jewelry boxes, salt/pepper and napkin holder, dragon incense burner, couch iPhone/iPad mini holder, sun chip and dip, world candle illuminator and peacock bookends. My middle schoolers rock so hard.

It's that time of the year! The fourth Night of the Arts is in just over a month. Thankful for a planning day to spend taping artwork. All I have left to do is fourth and first grade!

Calling all quilters!

For my 7th and 8th graders, we have yearly traditions in the art room; special activities to end the semester. 8th grade has the tie dye shirts. 7th grade makes roses and cookie color wheels.

I had a giant brain blast yesterday for the 6th grade. The units this year focus on collaboration and textiles. What if we made a quilt?!?!? I remember making one as a 4th grader- we each made 9 squares of the quilt. Simple straight stitching, and then the blocks were reinforced and sewn together by machine.

Sooooo… I have a source for free fabric and I know where to go for needles and thread. I’m not and quilter by any means.

What else do I need to know/order? @ambedu anybody?
