Summer’s Wonder - KayaxHunter

“Wait! Wait!”

     Hunter darts behind one of the tall and forgiving trees in the park to hide. Armed with the mightiest of water guns on the market currently, he tries to gather his breath before she can find him once more. They have been at it for hours now, this water gun battle that they started in the late afternoon. It’s now spilling into sunset and Hunter is acutely aware that his soaked through clothes are not going to save him from the chill of night when it starts to really set in. 

    He checks the level of water in his weapon and for a few seconds he feels secure. That is until he realizes that Kaya hadn’t responded. The park has it’s noises; people jogging, talking, playing frisbee and all that. But the sound of her shoes passing over the grass or the excited laugh that she has are gone. He freezes. She’s gone into stealth mode, he realizes. Which can only mean one thing for sure—- that she is near and will strike soon. Alert to everything suddenly Hunter’s shoulders tense up toward his ears and he readies his water gun. In this moment he very much wishes he had listened to Eros’ tales of epic water gun fights that once were more common place on the island.

   “Kaaaayyyyaaaa,” he croons as he listens carefully for any sounds of her. “Where are you?”

    Oh if he could only realize, she’s right above him in the tree.

Oh, he'd done himself in.

Hunter had the brilliant idea of a gunfight and since the weather had begun to warm up, she agreed. He had a way of making her have fun that made her forget about the world around them and the armor she held so tight around her disappeared.

Hunter was fun, adventurous, and carefree.

And so busted.

He'd looked away - first mistake. As soon as he disappeared behind the tree her expression turned into one that would put the Cheshire cat to shame. Little did he know she loved climbing trees, ever since she was a wee child. Up she went as quietly as she could, putting the skills she'd locked away to good use; it seemed he hadn't noticed her yet and she nearly squealed with excitement.

She had to be careful, and careful she was as she wrapped her legs around the sturdy branch she was on and slowly lowered herself until she was just behind him. If he turned around and took a small step, he could probably bump their heads together. "Are you sure you want to know?" She whispered loud enough for him to hear and not startle him. Winning the fight wasn't on her mind, but having a good time and potentially scaring him was the trophy Kaya was after.

  Her familiar face makes Dakota remember that his choice in sleeping on a park bench is a worrisome thing for the average person to see. Especially in a city like theirs where it wasn’t really done. Back home in California- sure, not all that weird to find people sprawled out on benches, doorways and even on the sidewalks at times. But here? Nah. Her familiar face also makes him remember that he had spent last night drinking far too much with Ryul, Heather, Noel and Invidia.

   “Okay is a social construct made by the Big Cheese in charge to keep us going to our capitalist prisons- I mean jobs.” The answer is not a real one save for that it’s too real where it hits. He closes his eyes again as his stomach protests his waking state- loud and angry it demands attention soon. “I’ll be Gucci as long as I eat something before my stomach eats itself.”

   He sits up and yawns before stretching his arms overhead and actually assessing if he’s doing alright today. The hangover he’s sporting is going to be a pain but nothing he can’t handle with good food and taking it easier at work later. Her offer of a jacket is a nice one but if he starts moving around he’ll get warm enough. It’s early in the day when the cool of the night is still there before noon will heat away the midday.

  “Mm, no coat.” He answers and moves to stand fully now. He twists at the waist and his spine gives a satisfying pop that he hums about before pushing his hands over his face and up into his hair. “What time is it?”

His response is surprising enough that her expression flattens. Noel enjoyed giving her such replies all the time, the quirky bastard. Dakota didn't make her feel like smacking the back of his head for it, though, so she chuckled instead, trying to ignore that his words actually carried harsh truths.

"By all means, dismantle the institutions in power."

She rolled her eyes in a playful manner, leaning against the bench with arms crossed while she watched the sleep roll off from his face. He looked like he'd gone through a marathon... being dragged by his feet. It was nearly comical, but she knew better than to make light of it. "It's half past eleven." It was a rare sight to have her out before two pm, but it just so happened there were some errands she needed to run. "Well then, I can treat you to some food if you'd like. It's time for an early breakfast."

Festive days were always something strange to experience, at least when she wasn't taking part in them. Half of her childhood was spent in hiding and the other half was a bit harder to explain, so there was no room for Christmas or sentimentalism. It never bothered her, though, not even when Hunter asked her about it; she just never had the chance to celebrate it, and she had made her peace with it.

Kaya preferred giving gifts rather than receiving them, so she helped Hunter with his happily and gave no second thought to it, which is why his call so early in the morning had taken her by surprise. She'd been pulled from a gentle sleep by his voice and if he hadn't kept talking, she might've thought she was dreaming still.

"Yeah, gimme a minute. I'm coming." Him calling her 'baby' had her all shades of flustered and her drowsiness didn't help at all. "I'll see you in a bit, love." And with that she hung up and rushed to the bathroom to wash her face and brush her teeth. He'd seen her after waking up before, so the loose braid and oversized hoodie —which happened to be his— were an 'okay' outfit for him to see her in at that ungodly hour.

"Coming!"

She finished in record time and opened the door after pushing some stray hairs away from her face. The sight that greeted her had her staring for a second, and less than a breath later she was grinning at the man in front of her. "Well, I can see why everyone's so excited for Santa now." Hunter looked adorable, with the costume and that smile Kaya could only describe as his that sent her to the moon and back. "Come on in, wonder boy, before someone steals christmas."

    She opens the door and Hunter watches the sleepy expression she wears shift to one of surprise as she takes in his outfit. Head to toe he’s made himself into the image of Santa for the meeting with her. Grinning from ear to ear he slips back into character.

   “It’s nothin’ but normal to be excited when you’ve made it onto the Nice List to see me,” he says in a mock deeper voice than his own. He hoists a bag of gifts better on his shoulder and tilts his chin up proudly. What a silly man! “Now if you will let me in so I can do what I do best, I’d be much obligated Miss Kaya.”

  And yes, she gives him the room to do so but Hunter’s eyes are on her outfit just as hers were on his. He takes in her messy hair, clean face and her legs that peek from under the security of his hoodie. Damn, a weakness has been found! Dumbly, Hunter remains looking at her for a moment, before his cheeks redden and his eyes go once again to her legs.

   “Suuugar,” he says absently. Then he clears his throat and seems to snap out of it for the moment, “I got gifts.” That much is radiantly clear but heaven help him because for just a moment he really did short circuit a bit! Regaining his composure and his character he steps inside the house and beelines for the couch. That is where he will create a pile of gifts for her.

It's the mention of her being on the nice list what surprised her the most. Sure, she's toned her ways down significantly, but she was by no means the definition of a good samaritan.

It got her gifts, though, so she wouldn't complain.

"You come on in, mister. Before I tell Mrs. Claus where your eyes are looking." She chuckles and shakes her head in an attempt to get her cheeks to cool off. Hunter never failed at making her knees go weak and stealing the cheekiness from her, but it was just part of his charm.

Rix greeted him with a sleepy meow from his tower in the living room, sparing him one look before curling up again and going back to sleep. "Are you included in those gifts?" It was his fault for coming over all cute so early in the morning that her sleepy daze got her acting this way. "Tell me, Santa, what did I get for being so good this year?" She follows after him, beating him to the couch just by chance and sitting right in the middle of it while eyeing the bag he was carrying.

Susanoo's eyebrows reached the next height level, almost touching his messy hairline. Few could bring genuine surprise to his expression, for the god of seas and storm had seen and heard so much it left little to be explored.

But Kaya's simple statement did just that, making his eyes go wide and mouth agape. The calm sea seemed to be interested in what she said, as little waves climbed up higher onto the sandy beach to follow the conversation better.

It was still too early and too sunny to assume this situation was a dream. He blinked, once, twice, but not taking more than that to come up with the next thing to say.

"You've come here all the way from your boudoir, to spend time with me?" Susanoo snickered, incredulous at what had just come out of his mouth. He looked her into the eyes, as if searching for any signs of lying. "Seriously, what do you want from me this time, little Miss?"

Kaya expected any reaction except the one she got. He looked truly taken aback, and the way his eyes nearly tripled in size had her cackling as she sat down beside him.

The beach had always been her favorite place, no matter where she was. The smell, the breeze, the sound - all of it reminded her of home. "Can't I bask in your presence? Damn." The sand was welcoming and the sun warmed up her frame while the sea breeze made her long hair dance. She missed this so much.

The demigoddess wasn't particularly related to the sea but still found solace in the way the waves crashed and reached the shore. Susanoo just happened to be there, same as her, so why not spend some quality time together, right?

"I was just walking by and decided to say hi, there's no need to be scared of me today." That much was right. He'd proven to be different from the other gods; he wasn't patronizing, judgemental, egotistical (at least not in a way that bothered her), had a sense of humor... he was a good lad. "I just missed the beach is all. How have you been? Missed me?"

❛ touch me, and you're dead. ❜ He says waking up with the light touch on his arm. He sees who it is and relaxes a bit. “Oh, it’s you, never mind.”

Kaya chuckled.

She'd been around many people who'd said the same thing if she accidentally disturbed their sleep, and she knew —or at least, liked to think she did at least a bit— Dakota enough to be sure he wouldn't really hurt her. "I'm sorry, I woke you." Her voice was soft, with a gentleness to it that felt almost foreign.

"Are you okay?" It hadn't been long since she finally met him. The Dakota that always seemed to be in Noel's memories from when they were young and exploring the world on their own. He'd told her about all his friends, even when he couldn't tell them about her. Noel had shared many things: their friendship, the brawling, the bickering and experiences he got to live beside him and Invidia and in all of them, Dakota always sounded strong, fierce — so alive with that spark of old magic that drew similarities between them.

A younger Kaya thought he sounded like the coolest guy around, especially when he gave Noel hell. "I can bring you a jacket or something if you're cold."

"Oh, I always have something to say." She was furious. Some dickwad thought he knew better than Eirwen, and if there was one thing she hated most above everything else, were people like that. People with gigantic egos and minuscule respect that pushed whatever sorry excuse of a thought their brains managed to conjure onto others.

"If I ever hear him breathe again--" It was a joke. Kind of.

Kaya was not a being of goodwill and kindness. It was not in her nature to be, she only tried to be out of consideration for the people she had come to care about and some others. This blatant show of disrespect, however, made her blood boil even if she'd only seen the other woman a couple of times. Her jaw clenched as she rubbed her temples, unsure if she was proud of herself for not blowing up on him or if she regretted letting him walk away unharmed. "I'm sorry, people like that just... get to me."

Eirwen tilted her head, and the dull twinkles in her eyes got to see another angel of Kaya’s frustration. Her wavy auburn hair cascaded down the sides of her doll-like face and her bony shoulders, softening all the edges. In her petite frame, the raging flame of anger had just gone back to sleep, sealed with a cotton-candy smile.    

“You’re so cute,” she said, as easily as breathing, dedicated both to the demigoddess and her fuming-still indignation. 

The disturber was forgotten as soon as he was, first politely, then persistently, invited out of the Black Forest Bakery. Most of the time, customers came here in search of something soul-soothing sweet, something scrumptiously tart, something heavenly crunchy, or something heart-melting soft. And when it was time for a semi-special occasion, like today with Eirwen’s free-entrance class of chocolate cupcakes making, curious eyes and open minds came for some baking tips and a little break from the tough reality. 

That man was a one-of-a-kind case, something Eirwen would be happy to turn into a toad. But even that would waste some of her precious potion. 

“Save your energy for something more worthy, darling,” she almost cooed, the most harmless ‘darling’ she had uttered for a while. “Something like making cupcakes? The second class is starting in ten minutes, you’re very much welcome to join.”

She didn't know how Eirwen did it. It was almost mindboggling to Kaya how she could remain calm and collected, or at least seem like it, but then again, Kaya wore her heart on her sleeve and held nothing back. Such control seemed so out of reach for her. "I'll accept it only because you said it." She disliked compliments most of the time, but them coming from someone she respected like Eirwen? Only a fool would refuse. "Thank you." Kaya blew her bangs out of her face, her icy glare following after the back of the current public enemy number one.

Before the guy decided to be a nasty piece of work, Kaya had gone in looking for her daily fix of sweets, got a couple of adorably decorated cookies, and asked about some other treats. Making well-informed decisions on what to eat was a serious matter for her. "Alright, you had me at cupcakes."

Kaya didn't need to save energy, she had plenty to spare, especially if it involved knocking an asshole from his self-made pedestal. Fine, fine. She thought. "You had me at cupcakes." Food was the easiest way to get on her good side, particularly sweets - her sweet tooth was unmatched and Eirwen had just tickled her interest. "Just in time too, I'm down to my last two cookies. Should I wait here? Oh, will we get to eat them afterward?"

Sometime after 4:18a.m, December 25th, 2023

     It’s early.

      Hunter doesn’t even need to open his eyes to know that it is some ungodly hour that he’s woken himself up at. Before falling asleep but just after hanging up with his girlfriend he set several alarms to be sure that he wakes up.

     Kaya said when they hung out days ago with Hunter amid a sea of wrapping paper and colorful bows, that she didn’t really celebrate Christmas. He had asked her lightly about it and learned a bit as to why and reasoned that it didn’t sound entirely like she was against at least being thought of on the day. That’s why when he had sent her off to go home later on the same day she said that he had come up with the little plan that he’s setting in motion now. It’s just before sunrise that he makes his way out of bed to get started.

    Once he’s had a shower and fixed himself up to be presentable he makes his way from the bathroom to dress. Today though, he doesn’t reach for his comfortable clothes. He doesn’t reach for the nicer clothes that he had gotten for dates exclusively. Nah— none of that will do for today. Today he’s got something special to wear.

    He pulls on thick red pants with soft white faux fur at the cuffed edges, shiny black boots, a thermal black under shirt over which he pulls on a thick red coat. It’s got shiny black buttons under the matching white fur that trims the edges of it as he fastens it closed tight to his body. He tops the look off with a red Santa hat, it’s proud white ball at the end pristine for the occasion! Giving himself a look in the mirror of his room he fires finger guns at himself, “Lookin’ mighty fine!”

   Set on his clothing Hunter salutes himself before making his way with his phone in hand toward the front door of his place. Just before he would head out of it he reaches down and grabs a giant red sack that seems full of things if the odd shape of it is anything to go off of. Bag in his grasp he’s ready as he pulls his keys from the ring by the door and heads out!

   It’s a short ride to where Kaya is but he’s smiling the whole way as he goes. Once he’s parked and made his way to her door he doesn’t knock lest he wake anyone else. What he does do is call her as he stands outside the door of her place. Her sleepy voice greets him confused on the line and he smiles.

   “Can you come open the door for me baby? I need to see ya right away. Yeah— I know it’s early but it couldn’t wait.”

Kaya whispered urgently to her friend, even with the hints of laughter laced in her hushed tones. There was a reason, obviously. A tall, tanned, long haired and handsome reason her heart threatened to jump out of her chest and she lost all sense of calmness for a moment. She peaked at him from where she was, her cheeks warm and aching to smile even though it seemed he hadn't seen her yet.

He was saying hello to Eros, and it might've been her raging crush on him but she swore he looked a tad more dashing than usual. Kaya knew he visited Minx from time to time and while she'd seen him before, it was the first time she felt nervous to perform knowing he'd be in the crowd.

Her ears must be playing tricks on her, muffling his words but making that southern drawl she liked so much stand out against the faint noise of the place. "Kiki, he's here."

"you're not bad as everyone says you are"

Kaya's eyebrows rose in slight surprise. It wasn't the first time she'd heard such words, and honestly, she wasn't as bothered by them as some might think. The opinions of others never bothered her, at least when they came from people she didn't care about, but Elias was Carter's friend, and that carried some weight with her. She'd listened to Carter tell her about the times they spent together as children and while she might judge a bit too strongly at times, her bias towards her friend and his connections was undeniable.

"Imagine if I wasn't being nice to them."

She chuckled, the comment being more light hearted than truthful. Remaining civil with those she encountered was a task, but it was something she promised to do before arriving at the island. 'Not everyone will try to understand you.' Noel had told her, and he was right. Something told her though, that it was alright to let lose around this new acquaintance of hers. Slowly, of course.

❛ how long has it been since you've slept? ❜

It'd been a rough night. Kaya had been staying up with Carter for a couple of days seeing as neither of them found peaceful slumber for the past few weeks. They both had their reasons, and their friendship was just soothing enough that it allowed for them to be there when they needed it. "Sorry?" She tried blinking herself awake, straightening her back against her seat while everyone else was having breakfast at Honeypot.

She must've been quite the sight; dark circles paired with her night colored hair and lazy clothes, the hood of her oversized hoodie draped over her head. "Oh, well, it's been a while." Kaya smiled softly at Yeji as she held her coffee close to her chest, trying to take in every bit of its warmth. "It's not too bad, I promise." She tried reassuring the sweet girl, even though she guessed her appearance didn't help much. "This coffee and the rest that will come after it will help fix it!"

That would be true enough.

"Oh, really?"

Kaya grinned playfully at Cassandra as she looked over her shoulder while pouring the demigoddess' beer. In Halloween spirits, everyone working at the bar agreed to wear a costume on every coyote ugly night, and it so happened that it was one of those nights. Everything was decorated, customers joined in with costumes of their own and the games had just begun. That night was pirate night.

She'd enthusiastically requested for it to be one of the themes, so she was sporting what the lady at the thrift store had described as "a vampire pirate on a date" - a red, flowy dress with sleeves that would make Blackbeard shit his pants under a tightly laced corset (and a harness or two). A myriad of necklaces and belts adorned her neck and hips and a mock Jack Sparrow pirate hat sat on her head proudly. It was a look to be proud of. "Thank you. Put it together myself." By then she'd seen Cassie around enough times to know she liked her company. The nights she went in were fun ones in her book. "You don't look too bad yourself." She chuckled while setting down the pint on the bar before getting ready for the party to begin.

“Dang girl! You tryin’ to buy up my whole store?”

“Yes, I’m taking everything.” Kaya smiled at who she assumed was the owner, taking one of the rosemary pouches he set down as she spoke. His reaction to her had her chuckling - he was a kind face, cheeky smile and a cute accent all in one, so seemingly carefree he was as charming as his shop. Now, she didn’t have the intention of buying everything at that instant, but playing wouldn’t hurt, right?

‘Miss Kaya’. 

Her smile widened and amusement lit up her eyes just for a split second before she followed the wave of his hand to the register, setting the things she’d picked out on the counter. There weren’t many mirrors she could see, so she was able to look around her while waiting for him. It really was a nice place, colorful in its own way and somehow she could see how it matched him in a way. 

“So, Hunter -  do you offer readings of any kind? I’ve never had one done before.”

   The collective of her items is deposited on the counter and Hunter starts the process of scanning them into the system after rounding the corner. His hands are quick but touch each treasure with care as he scans them through and then wraps them in lilac tissue paper. A song is on his lips as he works, a hum lifting from him as he works making the whole interaction seem breezy and relaxed. Hunter himself was just like that— usually found in a state of calm at his shop.

  When Kaya speaks again he looks up from carefully wrapping several white candles together. Mmm readings! Hunter was great at readings! He had the skills to divine things from the leaves of tea, from scattered runes, the painted faces of tarot cards but his favorite was the tossed arrangements of bones. A smile blooms on his features again and it reaches his eyes that crinkle at the corners before he nods his head an affirmative yes.

  “I sure do! I most surely do!” He drawls happily before twine tying the candles wrapped in paper and placing them into the bag of her things. He keeps scanning the last of her haul as he goes on, “What you thinkin’? Tea reading? Taro—hold on.”

  He stops scanning a jade wand and reaches to grab one of the pamphlets on the counter. He flips it open to the middle of its folded form and holds it out to her. It’s printed face offers up a list of types of readings and people who do them. Under his picture is a list of the types he does himself with a note that says he specializes in bone reading.

   “You’ll have to forgive the other staff for not being here today, it looked so nice out there that I sent them on out to have some fun. But I can do whatever you like if you don’t that we sit at the front table,” he gestures to the large round table a bit away from the counter that can seat six and has on it a large copper bowl with what looks to be offerings inside it and a circle of small shells and stones around it.

She almost regrets distracting him, almost. Hunter just looks so serene doing even that — running her items through while humming softly to himself, he seems free in his own world until she speaks and he turns to look at her. The way his smile reaches his eyes is endearing and it's hard not to smile back at him, so she gives in, chuckling under her breath at how contagious his enthusiasm was.

How cute.

"Mhm, mhm... Oh! Thanks!" Her nodding along as he was listing off the options was cut short when the sheet of paper is in her hands and she takes her time reading over the options, even though it's only the two of them in the store. Her eyebrows raise as she goes over everything he can do and the undeniable interest in bone reading has her peaking up at him from behind the pamphlet. "I don't mind at all, ." Was her interest in it because it was his specialty? Absolutely, but there was also something about it being bones that she was curious about.

"Seems like it'll be just us two for a bit of bone reading, huh?" She chuckled, stepping a bit closer to the table to peek at the bowl. There were so many things she was curious about, but thought maybe it was best to leave them for later. For now, it was time to pay up and read up! "How much do I owe you?"

   Hunter goes back to scanning in the plethora of things that she’s brought him, each one carefully and artfully wrapped and placed in the bag. He doesn’t disturb her as she reads over the selections available or when she ventures off to peer into the offering bowl on the large table. Inside its golden confines are tiny folded paper stars and slivers of folded paper. The offerings are wishes of the city that are each carefully noted and dropped into the bowl.

   The careful hand that records each wish is still somewhat a mystery to many but it is that careful hand and Hunter’s magic that make the little happy pockets of the day come around easier.

   “Bone readin’!” Hunter chirps it after she asks about it. “You sure you wantin’ that? It’s not like them cute little oracle cards that paint the world nicely. Bones are rooted to the earth and the earth speaks truth louder than most things can.”

   Bones, stripped of the flesh that seeks to elevate itself with better, are base. They seek nothing than the sweetness of rest in the crust of creation that they come from. These bones that he reads with whisper from beyond the veil of realities unhindered by sugar-coated fantasy.

  “We can talk price after you decide if you’re satisfied,” he says casually as he ties a black and purple ribbon through the two handles of the shopping bag to secure it more. His smile is a soft thing, “I’d hate for you to pay for something you don’t like the answers to, Sugarplum.”

Kaya's eyes widened slightly in surprise. Did she seem like the type to seek cuteness and comfort from a reading? The thought was entertaining, but she took it as a quiet compliment. "It's alright, I can handle it. I'm a tough one." She mused, her tone reassuring and playful more than anything as her eyes followed the gentle way his hands worked the ribbon. Did he put as much care and attention into everything he did?

Probably.

"Fair enough." She'd pay him regardless of whether he told her what he thought she wanted to hear — what Kaya was after was a semblance of truth, no matter how small or what shape it took. If it was unpleasant so be it, right? Right. "Although something tells me I won't be disappointed." With a shrug, her jacked slid off her shoulders and she set it on the back of one of the chairs, the somber thoughts pushed away by the sweetness dancing on his lips.

"I'll just—" It was hard to contain her excitement as she sat down, eyes bright when they met his. "Ready when you are, bone reader sir."

   The way that she lights up like Christmas at the mall makes Hunter smile. Many people even in the regular world outside the island were afraid of bone reading. It was too raw, too real and frankly too bizarre for many people to handle. Their minds start to wander on too much as the reading is happening, disrupting the energies needed to see all that would help them for both themselves and for Hunter. Bone reading outside of the South was just difficult. Kaya’s enthusiastic respond makes him happy because it reminds him of home just a little bit.

   “You gotta be if that’s the reading you choose!” He laughs and sets her bag of goodies down on the table before he moves to the small table not far off to switch on the kettle. Once it’s going Hunter turns to her and smiles. “I’ll grab what I need really quick if you keep an eye on the door. I don’t think we’ll get anyone for a bit but still. Just gotta grab the bones and things.”

     The bones and things in question? They sit in a lacquered box that is locked away in the store safe. He steps away from the table and makes his way back and it’s just before he walks through a hallway with a thin curtain that he touches the wall and looks back at her. “Miss? You’re going to tell the things that cling to you to go before we start.”

     And with that he goes behind the curtain.

Everything that clung to her? A soft hum rose from her throat as she thought of the endless possibilities of what that could mean. There were definitely skeletons in her closet, secrets and bonedust piled up under the rug and red staining her past - maybe it was all of that what he meant. "Okay, okay." She agreed, and although she cleansed within the means of her own practice quite regularly, maybe the ghosts of her lifetime would be unruly enough at new opportunities to shine.

Alright. Kaya brought her hair over her shoulder, combed through it with her fingers before weaving it into a loose braid while a language so ancient in nature sung from the depths of her soul; it was an old thing, but it lifted the weight off her shoulders as she repeated Hunter's words in her mind.

That should do the trick and there was no denying how peaceful she felt in that moment, even when the scar on her face tingled in protest.

Her ears were sharp in case anyone walked through the door, even with her curiosity and excitement threatening to burst right through her. It wasn't everyday that she found herself in a place so strangely welcoming to those like her that mingled in such things. "This is so nice. (I) ought to do it often." She thought out loud, leaning back against the chair and stretching her legs out while trying not to count down the minutes until Hunter returned.

Stir It Up

Among all creatures he had stumbled over, god-human hybrids were so far the most fascinating. And troublesome. And contradictory. 

In each and every of them, war and peace were waltzing. Some floated along an ethereal rhythm, others spinned over a demonic fairground melody. There was greatness and there was darkness, constantly battling for the throne of body and soul. He sensed it, saw it, the struggle of a suppressed power inside the demigoddess gazing at him. Something sublime, promising, reeking of destruction, a dark greatness screaming to break free. 

It must be terrifying as well, Susanoo assumed, since what in chains often were feared the most.  

Toying the glass of wine in between his fingers, the Japanese god waited for Kaya’s response, to which he beamed, as bright as sparkling sea surface underneath the mid-summer sun. 

“I am of the belief that when those deepest, darkest secrets of yours get loud enough, you should let them out. But…" his eyes bored into hers, his gaze soft, eerie, embodying a moonless night at the open sea. “Whispering your sins to a trustful companion, or letting them explode like a bomb for the whole world to feel, only you know which is the better choice, yes?”

There was something in the cocktail he was taking, or because her curiosity was tickling his, that Susanoo drifted to the greater depth of his volatile ocean, taunting her to follow. The demigoddess’ next question was considered with a grain of playfulness, his head tilted for dark ocean eyes to take in a different angle of her face, his long delicate neck exposed, and the tip of his dainty index finger dipped into the cool, transparent surface of the martini.   

“What would you say if I said I do not see any corners of you that are empty?” He queried, more of a spoken wandering thought than a real question, his voice carried the silkiness of the black shirt he was wearing. “We just need to help you stir it up, you know. Friendship, love, sex, dramas, the most humane things you can list. Or something exciting, like…”  

Susanoo shifted his eyes to his cocktail, where his finger was lazily twirling in the liquid. He stopped, lifted the finger up, and watched as droplets of martini slowly drifted down back into the glass. Gracefully, the god raised his hand, his soaked fingertip gleamed under the gentle lights. As if only waiting for the cue, outside the bar, a rumble drummed behind the night sky, and the trees swung softly in the embrace of mischievous winds. 

“...Power?” 

He turned his head to look at Kaya again, a layer of playfulness was still filming over his face. Then, without breaking eye contact, Susanoo flicked his wrist, his palm opened skyward. A bolt of lightning momentarily lightened up the night, thunder followed, and rain began tapping against the glass windows.

Her conflict with the 'divine' were something she didn't keep hidden — her disdain towards them was as visible as the inked chain around her neck, sung so loud that it was near impossible to control the more she saw of them, each second that passed by a torturous ticking that grew closer to impending doom with the God in front of her waltzing the fine line of it all, and she made no effort to keep him away.

Every word that fell from his lips was like poison, burning from deep within as he listed every mundane thing he could think of, looking more like a dangerous, still ocean while calling for a single drop of rain to turn the tide. His flattery flicked its wings against the stone cold walls of her heart, the comment earning him the rising of her brows in amusement.

The rumbling breaking through the skies was enough to empty out the bar, reigning fear in the scrambling demigods that were terrified of a bit of cold rain.

"...Power?" his voice echoed in her mind.

Power. Now that was something she was familiar with; the thirst for it, its corruption and the madness that followed after. She'd seen it in countless eyes, tasted it on the tip of her tongue and she was sure its flavor was no different than that of the drink in his glass. "We?" The corners of her lips curled upwards. Something told her that he knew perfectly well how dangerous that sounded, and maybe that's what kept her from pushing him away.

She breathed out a chuckle, pushed her weight off of the counter and leaned forward to take the glass from his hand and taking one small sip of it. "How do you suggest we stir things up?"
