His arms crossed in front of his chest. Well, now he was curious, because he didn't actually think he was missing something. He frowned, then shook his head. Nope. Nothing. "What is it?"
Alfred sighs, turning to place the item infront of Gareth over the kitchen table.
"I found it, tucked in with some old newspaper in my army collection...it's your Captain epaulette...I recall finding it on the floor of my office cabin the day after you were promoted"
He swallows. "It's a bit scuffed up, threads coming loose, not sure what the stains are, but...something of better times, I already knew it was yours without finding the pen marking G M inside the stitching..."

Alfred smirks at the joke. "Since-" he pauses to wrap the towel around his hips. "-forever, I just always smoke them when you're out, I was at the back door, and I thought, shit, I better come and tell you before my husband triggered dementia kicks in again"
"So, do you want cake or... I mean, you looked hungry for something else for a second there," he chuckles.
He swallows. Right. The cake. Having nearly forgotten about that... "I...I think I'll go with the cake." Though that other can surely be demanded afterwards, too. And then cake again, perhaps.
Without further ado he puts the bookmark between the pages and closes the book, putting it aside. "You know smoking is a terrible habit, though?"
"Fully aware of it, thankfully, I cut down from five to just one, I can probably kick it to be honest..." he reshuffles the towel and eyes Gareth before smiling.
"Cake....right, let me, go...put some clothes on then, yeah, I don't think you want me naked and cutting cake..." he wanders towards the door before turning back. "or do you? I mean...it's just on the counter, you could get it yourself and then meet me in the bedroom?" he laughs before going a bit shy. "Sorry, I shouldn't tease, it's been a long week for you, love"

An hour later, after a good hot shower, he wanders back into the room, in only his bath towel. "I remembered why I came in here now" he mutters around his cigarillo pipe. "I got one of those black forest gâteau cakes from the deli, do you want in?"
"I--" He is still in the same position, still reading the same book, looking up at Alfred. Though this time the other manages to distract him far longer than before. His gaze lingers for a moment before it wanders up to meet Alfred's. "Is it Sunday already?" Gareth jokes. "Since when are you smoking those?"

He looks up from his back, looks at Alfred, locks eyes. Then just stares at him. Not moving, not saying anything, unsure what it is that the other actually wants. Surely it can’t be that confusing; after all, all Gareth does in that moment, is exist and read a book. He doesn’t do anything distracting whatsoever. Still staring even after Alfred has left, he then finally goes back to reading his book.
