Holi Paint Party
Holi is a Hindu festival that welcomes spring and celebrates colours, and is most known for having a plethora of coloured powder thrown in the air (and at your friends). We love going with our friends, and this was our third year going to this particular Holi party in Flatbush!

Tripping in the Cali Desert
For New Year’s Eve we went to Palm Springs with our friend Steve and some of his friends from California. Enroute we did a little hiking at Joshua Tree, a National Park known for its abundance of Joshua Trees in the Mojave Desert, stayed the night at Pioneertown, a town that started as a live-in Old West motion-picture set, and did a “sound bath” at Integraton, an alternative lifestyle community that started in the 1970s and centered around its belief in UFOs. After NYE we let the Cali desert tripping experience continue at Robolights, a 3 acre fantastical winter-wonderland-meets-sci-fi art installation with over 8mm LED lights, before hitting the road home. All in all, we can confidently say there’s some pretty crazy stuff out in the California desert!

Limin in Tobago, Sure Riiight
Over Thanksgiving, we g̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶c̶r̶a̶s̶h̶e̶d̶ joined Christy and Leon's getaway trip to Tobago, a magical Caribbean island (sister to Trinidad). We spent several days scuba diving, snorkeling and "liming" (local slang for relaxing and drinking). We split up the stay between Speyside, a quaint village on the Atlantic side of the island, and Castara, a gorgeous little fishing village on the Caribbean side. The diving and snorkeling was amazing, with lovely reef and lots of sea life including turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, morays, seahorses and countless types of fish. We were blown away by the friendly locals, and enjoyed soaking up some much needed sun before the worst of the winter hits.

Rauk-ing out in Sweden
This summer we traveled to Stockholm to meet our friends Tali and Kathleen on their semi-annual pilgrimage back to Tali's homeland. We spent several days exploring the hip and happening neighborhoods of Södermalm and Hammarby, and soaked in Stockholm's summer charm (we even managed to catch an atmospheric Hammarby game but no cameras were allowed!). We then headed to Yasuragi, an incredible Japanese spa resort to celebrate Zeina and Kathleen's birthdays with amazing massages, food, sake and hot spring baths. Relaxed and glowing, we traveled to Gotland, a unique island that was once home to the Hanseatic trading league. Gotland is a popular tourist destination for Swedes and Northern Europeans, and much of the island's activity is based in Visby, a well-preserved and tasteful medieval capital. We visited several microbreweries, ate some incredible meals and enjoyed the company of Tali's uncle and aunt who graciously hosted us and showed us around. Needless to say, we fell in love with Sweden and can't wait to get back!

Rambling in the Countryside
Earlier this summer we took a trip to the UK to visit Garry's family in Manchester and attend his cousin Stuart's wedding in Penrith in the Lake District. In the few days in between, we met up with Garry's brother and parents to spend some time off the beaten path wandering around the Lake District. We got plenty of fresh English countryside air, a lot of pub grub that we're probably still working off, and time with our bouncy nephews and their cute little Brisbane accents. Nash-vegas
We recently took a trip to Nashville to surprise our good friend Helen for the 10 year anniversary since we all met in Manchester. Her husband, Rod, had to carry the heaviest burdens of the surprise and happily did so with a cheeky grin he whole time. Nashville is a great little town with lots to do, including live "honky tonk" music, but the highlight of the weekend was our day at the Steeplechase races. The Steeplechase races are one of Nashville's most popular events and it was a lot of fun going back and forth between our fancy "private box" and joining the crowds in the tailgating section. Ice-olated in a Lighthouse
No one will disagree that it has been a long and cold winter. We were very pleased, however, when the icy remains of winter provided stunning views on our recent trip upstate to stay at the historic Saugerties lighthouse. Lindsay and Peter booked the place over a year in advance, so we were thrilled when they invited us to join them. The drive was not long - in fact it felt shorter than the half mile walk through the ice and snow to reach the lighthouse from the closest road! The place was magical, and we were surrounded by sheets of breaking ice. It was a great time to retreat from our busy lives and learn a little bit about lighthouses. Saugerties lighthouse has been named a Historic Light Station in New York by the US Coast Guard and is currently used as a temporary bed and breakfast to help keep its history alive. After almost decaying entirely at one point, it was renovated in the 1980s with a lot of the original details kept in place - the first generation electric fridge, a wood-fired stove, and a wood-fired heating system. Copake Getaway
We spent Christmas and Thanksgiving in NYC this year, and wanted to get away without the hassle of scheduling flights. A group of friends decided to rent a cabin in upstate NY for the weekend, in a town called Copake. It was a great time to unwind with great home cooking, good company, and lots of games and activities. Click on the photo below to launch the album in a new window:
Diner En Blanc 2013
Once again we attended New York’s edition of Diner en Blanc. 4000 participants traveled all around the city to find out the highly anticipated secret location. Along the way we had to negotiate tight spaces and rush hour public transport with many questions from perplexed New Yorkers trying to get around us. All attendees have to dress in white and bring their own food, utensils, decorations, tables and chairs. All the hardwork paid off, and we had a lovely dinner and dance party in the very picturesque Bryant Park. The event recently celebrated its 25th anniversary in Paris (where it started) and is now hosting parties in 40 cities across the globe. The press has reported that 45,000 were on the waitlist this year, so we were very fortunate to have a membership (thanks to our friend Steve!). Wedding in the Hudson
We recently took a road trip out of New York to the Hudson Valley for our good friends Lindsay & Peter's wedding. We stayed in Kingston, NY and the wedding was set at a gorgeous historic Mansion overlooking the Hudson river. It was a spectacular wedding with all the details thought through.
On the drive home we stopped by Storm King - an open-air museum which has extended the concept of a "sculpture garden" to become a "sculpture landscape." I would highly recommend any NYC guest to check this out during this time of year!

2013 Vendy Awards
This year was our SEVENTH year attending the Vendy Awards. The event grows bigger every year and its always a great time. This year they moved the event off Governor's Island, which was a fun change. It was held in Industry City in south Brooklyn and the place had a great urban rustic vibe. With all the categories that have been introduced there is almost too much food! I was so busy trying all the food that I only got photos of a sample of vendors.

Jambo Jambo Zanzibar
Our trip to Africa was split into two parts. After our safari we vacationed on the magical island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania. The island's history includes a great range of different influences, from Iraqis, to the Portugese, slave traders, the British and an Omani Sultan raised in India. The result is a fascinating melting pot with beautiful architecture, spice plantations and amazing food and culture. Stone town, the island's capital is a UNESCO site with a myriad of colors, building styles and amazing carved doors. We spent two days exploring its labyrinthine alleyways, markets and historic buildings. From Stonetown, we traveled to the north coast to Nungwi beach, stopping along the way at a demonstration spice farm where we learned how various spices are grown. In Nungwi, we spent a few days unwinding next to a gorgeous beach with crystal waters, snorkeling on an atoll and watching dhows and fishing boats sail by. An amazing end to a great adventure. Magic of the Mara
For Zeina's 30th birthday, we decided to take an extra special journey to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The timing of our trip allowed us to experience the scale of the great wildebeest migration as well as all the joys of spring in Africa - lots of newborns! We flew to the Mara North Conservancy where we spent 5 days enjoying amazing game drives, taking long siestas, eating delicious meals and watching spectacular sunrises and sunsets across the plains. One day we took a breathtaking hot air balloon ride over the Mara to watch the sunrise and the animals waking. Our camp hosts and fellow guests were fantastic and our local Masai guides taught us so much about the land and its animals. It was truly a magical trip, with each day filled with new surprises and it was a wrench when we finally had to leave, although thankfully we were on our way to Zanzibar!

Pintxos & Toros
Our recent trip to Spain was broken into 3 parts. We started in the South (Malaga) to catch up with Nadia, Cris, Charlie and the Gil family, as well as Pablo and Shantel. It was lovely to unwind in the sun, eat grilled fish on the beach, and relax at Cris and Nadia's finca (guest house/estate) in the mountains. We then caught a flight north to Bilbao, where we met Kyla (from NYC), Sarah (from London), Tali & Kathleen (from Paris) and Maria & Kaz (from Hawaii). The reunion was fantastic - we took our time exploring all the art in Bilbao and then eating and drinking up a storm in San Sebastian. Once we had explored the pintxos capital and visited La Rioja wineries, we left our friends and reunited with Cris and Nadia, and all of their friends, in Pamplona for the annual San Fermin festival (AKA Running of the Bulls). We spent our last days in Spain immersed in the most high-energy event we had ever been to - between the bull fights, the runs, the feasts and the dancing we were thoroughly exhausted and very thankful to Cris' crew for showing us an amazing time.

We recently returned from a weekend adventure in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where our friends Daryl and Shannon live and were married. Daryl is one of our oldest friends in New York, and went to university with Cris & Nadia. For many years, we had the pleasure of living with Daryl in the East Village, where we also met his girlfriend, and now wife, Shannon. We enjoyed the road-trip with our friends and catching up with all the guests who'd traveled in for the event. The wedding was inspired by The Great Gatsby, and we had a lot of fun channeling the roaring '20s. Newburyport is a quaint town along the Northeastern coast, and the wedding was held in the gorgeous Crane Estate in the town of Ipswich. All the details were perfect and we had a great time!

Kalo Pascha
This May, we visited Athens with several of Zeina's family to celebrate her grandmother's 80th birthday. Teta ("grandma" in Arabic) was pleasantly surprised by family traveling from all around the world for her birthday: Canada, the West coast and East coasts of the US, Spain, Lebanon, and other parts of Greece. We were in Athens over the Greek Easter holiday so were able to take part in many of the Easter festivities.
