It looks like we are back, not by choice but out of necessity. I might move to Mastodon later.
Online predators create and share the illegal material, which is increasingly cloaked by technology. Tech companies, the government and the
If last year's Tumblr Purge had actually been effective, it wouldn't have effectively gone after all the CSAM shit instead of going after artists, photographers, writers, models, actors, and their fans.
However, Verizon much like any other company invested in technology took a shotgun approach to a scalpel problem. The result is the "porn" problem got mismanaged while the investigators saw the CSAM problem get worse.
The problem is digital bias, and it's the same issue that the LGBT community made a 31 minute video on YouTube exposing how YouTube and Google screwed the pooch when it came to machine learning by hiring low-wage workers in ultra-conservative countries to make decisions on what content could be monetized.
One person's bundle of twigs was another person's terrible insult. A reminder to all you ML/AI geeks: Robots do not understand insults, sarcasm, or even bias very well. They will take everything literally.
What's more, and this is for all the conservatives out there who think "liberals are censoring conservative free speech", you would be incorrect. If a group of folks like the LGBT community, which for the most part outside of the "Log Cabin" group of conservatives is being demonetized by robots, what do you think is doing the same thing with all you stuff? The same thing.
The robots aren't "liberal" they are LITERAL.
So every vulgar Obama joke pretty much gets processed like any bad Trump meme...or so we thought.
In fact the robots are Racist AF! They learned their hatred like anybody else: a consistent diet of being exposed to bias shit.
Microsoft's Tay.ai was ruined because what started as a joke by some 4chan pranksters turned into a nightmare.
One computer scientist, Joy Buolamwini noted that because how Machine Learning has trouble with recognizing faces of people with darker complexions, the machines don't recognize them, which for her, a person of color, was quite disheartening.
Algorithmic Data Bias doesn't just discrimination against race, gender, sexual activity, but also crime statistics, justice, financial lending, disability, healthcare, immigration, even hiring decisions.
Ever get turned down for a job to find out somebody not as good at the job as you gets hired or promoted but later it's discovered the person they hired was corrupt? Imagine AI or ML doing this constantly.
The bots make the decisions, but the parameters for how those decisions are made are still set and modified by humans, many with bias opinions either by a lack of understanding or education. In some places, state-run propaganda as been applied not to apply data to a specific democracy, but to be applied universally beyond borders. We saw this with how China tried to influence Google, how Russia did it with elections in the Ukraine and the United States, how Verizon and Yahoo did it when they ran Tumblr.
By now, we should know better than to apply Algorithmic Bias in data. What may seem like a good idea for one group to squelch out their rivals and enemies overall excludes, isolates, or ostracizes ther few supporters and allies that exist in the same area.
The one effective means to defeat Algorthmic Bias is to infiltrate it.

Seven Dirty Words You Can’t Say On TV, Radio, and now TUMBLR.
Now would probably be a good time to wish the Jewish community a Happy Hanukkah despite the Tumblr @staff making it one of the worst Hanukkahs in recent years just so they can get back on the App Store. Well, we’re not gonna let that happen.
The video version of this on Four on the Floor is way better.
And now a message for the @staff.
(Apologies to OneyNG for borrowing this.)
The ban includes explicit sexual content and nudity with some exceptions.
Tumblr commits suicide.
More than likely, you saw this in your dashboard today.
Which too you to this post on the Tumblr staff blog.
Which should be more than enough to motivate you to move your stuff from Tumblr GeoCities 2.0Â to here.
Because Tumblr is more interested in appeasing Apple than artists, it’s time to move to some Newgrounds.
Important about the Tumblr “Purge”
Tumblr has made and official statement on twitter about what’s going on:
We’re committed to helping build a safe online environment for all users, and we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to media featuring child sexual exploitation and abuse. As this is an industry-wide problem, we work collaboratively with our industry peers and partners like NCMEC to actively monitor content uploaded to the platform. Every image uploaded to Tumblr is scanned against an industry database of known child sexual abuse material, and images that are detected never reach the platform. A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database. We immediately removed this content. Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We’re continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team.
Please please please, for the love of everything, stop spreading fear in our community. They are not purging your blogs for having NSFW content. If your blog gets deleted and you didn’t have any of the above mentioned content, or something that could be percived as such, then please contact Tumblr Support to regain your blog. They can be contacted via the form here.
Please reblog so people stop spreading false information and cause unnecesary fear.
#signal boost
Uh...yeah...they did purge because of that. May as well and say it, but I do follow a few NSFW art blogs. And several of them which I did follow and that followed Geocities--I mean Tumblr’s rules still got axed even though they didn’t have what I call “Ajit Pai” content. No matter. These legitimate folks are moving to other communities. The only “CP” that should be on this site should be Cartoon Porn, which the Internet has plenty of apparently...or Charlie Parker...Computer Programmers...Cyberpunk...Cheap Ponies?
they….. they made no nut november legally binding….
Oddly enough since the made the safe mode mandatory, I have received two pieces of unsolicited spam for sites that solicit "meeting horney girls in your area", and have seen at least eight different reblog encouraging people to visit a website I wouldn't touch with a ten foot poll...but you know looking up certain niches that aren't Ajit Pai shit makes everybody Ajit Pai people.
ALL 👏🏾 OF 👏🏾 THEM 👏🏾
This post goes harder than any post has ever gone before.
When your relatives buy you clothes that aren’t your style anymore but you wear them anyway because they’re as tall as a building and could crush you by blinking.

tips for surviving this mess (artists ESPECIALLY) :
Export your blog content. If you can reach the site through its desktop version, click the person icon from your dash, click the name of a blog you have you want to export, select “Edit Appearance”. Scroll down and click “export (blog name)”. You will receive a .zip file. If anything ridiculous happens and you aren’t able to secure your account again, you at least should have your image files in one place. You will find in this folder the following (copied from the support article provided by tumblr staff themselves) :Â
A Posts folder, with an HTML file for each post.
A Media folder, with the media from your posts, plus any media you’ve uploaded (like in messaging). These files will be in the format you uploaded them in  (JPG, GIF, PNG, MP4, and so on).
A representation of your blog’s messaging conversations, in XML format.
A representation of your blog’s posts, also in XML format.
If your blog truly is NSFW, or has a significant portion of NSFW content, flag it properly. You can do this from the same page as the Export function ; read the above to do reach this page.
Stop your queue from posting while things are wild. You’ll be drowned out by users helping each other with this glitchfest, and that’s if your post isn’t hidden from users due to links. Use the edit post function to move queued posts into your drafts, and reverse this process when you’re ready to put them back. This is important for art bloggers especially.
If your blog is flagged and taken down, you can e-mail staff or reach them from their contact links. www tumblr com /support - replacing spaces with dots. Several tumblr users who have gone through the process will know better than I do on this particular matter.
Keep an eye on your side blogs. It seems some takedowns are bringing side blogs down with them. There isn’t a great amount of information on the whys or hows - most likely, if a side blog has only one admin and the admin is taken down, the side blog will be taken down with it, but again, these are restorable. Make sure to include the name of any sideblogs you have that may be affected if you have to send a ticket in to staff, it will make your request go through faster.
If you have important information to impart to your followers but it involves links, do your best to avoid using links themselves. Use work-arounds like the one above, create a custom page on your own blog with links on it, or simply phrase it carefully, such as, “you can find me on DeviantArt with the username ____!”
Are you an artist with active commissions? Let your clients know. Send them a message letting them know that you may be unavailable if Tumblr makes your account glitch out. Explain that it will be temporary, but if they need anything, they can reach you through e-mail or on another website. If you don’t have off-site options, tell them you may be down temporarily, but will be back as soon as possible.
A few helpful hints to add to this post:
1. Backup your content. If you never have done this, this weekend is a good time to do it. Google "Tumblr Backup Tools" and read up on which software you can use to do it.
2. Newgrounds (assuming you can put up with the file limit they have for posting stuff). Some users also are part of other sites where they have links to that for their profile. If you do a lot of NSFW stuff, avoid using Twitter, Instagram, and probably Deviant Art. Twitter and Instagram may sound like a good idea, but they are really not meant for that content. Patreon and Gumroad seem popular at the moment especially if you like to commission art.
3. Check the news. Things like the Tumblr Purge don't happen unless some dickhead abuses the system.
4. Know your rights! Americans, you got the advantage with the First Amendment. Don't let some trillion-dollar tech company dictate what is free speech by removing apps to cover their ass because a Sheriff's office used a subpoena to get info on someone abusing an app. If Apple really gave a shit, they would have banned Facebook for their role in the Rohingya Genocide. "Ajit Pai" allegedly found on suspect's iPhone using the Tumblr app.
Yesterday, I posted about how the #TumblrPurge was a disaster to Tumblr users, especially users who post adult art. Today, we have a face to go with this disaster. And as a reminder to readers, I have deliberately replaced that phrase with the words "Ajit Pai" because what better way to say something about an awful activity than to describe it with an awful person!
Enter Cisco Kane Veneno, 23, of Aztec, New Mexico.
Veneno is accused of "accused of distribution of visual medium of sexual exploitation of children and possession of visual medium of sexual exploitation of children" according to court records obtained by the Farmington Daily Times.
He was using Tumblr. And he was using the Tumblr App made for iPhone.
He shared the files in June, but the San Juan County (New Mexico) Sheriff's Office didn't start their investigation until October.
And thanks to scumbags like him, we now have the #TumblrPurge, not just of adult artists but of regular artists as well, because thanks to Tumblr's slipshod ability to configure an artificial intelligence engine before launching it, sites like Newgrounds, Twitter, Pixiv, Instagram, and Deviant Art (although the NSFW folks are going to find out how much Insta and DA are probably not the best alternatives for their skilled crafts) have seen new members and even a return of old members.
In fact, Newgrounds co-creator Tom Fulp welcomed new users with open arms following the Purge.
The Purge will do more harm to Yahoo! especially since not even a merger with AOL and the Huffington Post can save the Oath alliance or Yahoo!. In fact, thanks to this terrible decision, expect Tumblr to become the new GeoCities. All the cool stuff that is here: GONE because the people at Yahoo! don't understand Tumblr and only bought it because they though they were going to gain a whole lot of money for that dying indistry of Advertisement for Ad Revenue.
And Yahoo! has a history of making a lot of good things go away. Alta Vista was a great search engine and a competing rival of Yahoo!, but Yahoo!'s take over meant that AltaVista had to go away.
It didn't help that Yahoo!, instead of using their own search engine decided that post-AV-Merger to use Bing for all their searches. Like why would I want to go to Yahoo! to search Bing when I could go to Bing to search Bing.
America has a problem with creating duopoloies because monopolies are illegal. Which is why most of us are stuck between a choice of AT&T and Verizon and why T-Mobile and Sprint have a tough time competing with those two because have of Verzion used to be AT&T before the 1984 disveture. There's an entire diagram of how the Bell system was broken up into baby bells and how they've manged to almost merge back together but into two big houses.
Similarly, thanks to duopoly, a lot of people are stuck between Google and Bing, Facebook and Twitter, Coke and Pepsi, Walmart and Target.
Things like Lycos, Excite, Ask.com, and a whole list of things which we remember from the late 1990s and 200s are all under the ownership of a company called IAC, which Wikipedia has a list of assets that IAC has acquired over the years.
To return to the subject of why the Tumblr app was removed from the App Store, it was because Apple was trying to cover it's ass. When a police department has a Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force or an Internet Crimes Task Force, it usually means one of two things:
Something bad happend in the past in which children and computers were involved.
The police department is savvy enough to know how computer stuff works.
Most of the time it is option one. A lot of major metropolitian areas still do not have such task forces because they either don't see the importance of it (espeically in the 21st century where everything is on a computer) or they don't have the money for it. At least that seems to be the case in America anyway.
Most of the time, when there is Ajit Pai involved in such horrible crimes, it's like a shoe box full of lurid polaroids or a desktop computer.
Another element in this crime is Comcast. Comcast was there to turn over the Internet traffic to law enforcement. While in this case it was good that they reported that Veneno had been swapping Ajit Pai pics online, the bad part was they also reported that Tumblr and Apple provided the platform and the hardware to make those crimes possible.
Why did Comcast include that information? To provide the details or because Comcast has an axe to grind with Tumblr and Apple for the same reasons they have been trying to shake down Amazon and Netflix for using extra bandwidth?
Think of what Comcast did as saying "Here's the guy who was peeping in to people's houses...also because he was using binoculars and a scooter as the get away vehicle, I want you to also villanize birdwatching and alternative modes of transportation because those activities are stealing people away from doing things like racking up an enormous cable bill."
No good deed seems to go unpunished, at least as far as Comcast is concerned. Meanwhile, Apple tried to burn Tumblr by saying "We don't have no Tumblr app here" while telling Tumblr "If you want to get back into the App Store and make revenue using our services, you better remove content from your platform" to which Tumblr decided to burn ALL it's users, not just the Adult Artists, by saying "Guess what, you're account has been cancelled because we want to be on the App Store again."
Meanwhile, back on Google Play, the Tumblr app has been given an M rating, and rightfully so.
Google has been using the ESRB's software rating system for quite a while now, and they also restrict access to apps in the Play Store based on ratings.
However, it is important to remebmer that for in order for a rating system to work and to keep mature content away from children, there needs to be RESPONSIBLE MATURE ADULTS. As well a RMAs that know how to use technology to say "Hey wait a minute. No." or "Don't use that" or "Don't go there".
But wait, Veneno is 23. He is an adult. So if our problem isn't children getting access to mature content, what is the problem?
The law is working. So why is everybody being punished? Because Tumblr and Apple wanted to cover their ass.
Tumblr could have avoided the Purge if they had better monitored their content. Apple could have not killed the Tumblr app in the App Store. And everyone should have kept calm and not paniced because of that 0.0000001% of people who abuse the system that the A.I. was supposed to take care of but wasn't set up because it went all John Ashcroft on everything.
Tumblr needs to reinstate a lot of users, and offer a appology to everyone because their actions were not a well intentioned attempt to clean up Ajit Pai from their site but to save its own ass at the cost of free speech online.
And good luck trying to bring back those people who they hurt the most, because a lot of them won't be coming back.
