I'm so fuvking tired with this shit. Why do people like horrible characters in books so much, main characters, the ones you're supposed to root for? (I'm not talking about villains, villains are bad and that's good, fun even.) It's fine when the hero makes mistakes and chooses wrong, when he does something dubious and immoral, it's fine, he's supposed to be a human being on that pages. But for the love of all that's grey, why everyone thinks the more horrible the better. He (because for female characters it's not the same) must be possessive, rude, agressive. Body count? The higher the dreamier. He can kill, torment everyone around, abuse and assault the heroine but people will still wonder if he ends up in a happy relationship with the girl he's trying to destroy, and call the book a romance. The fuck?
And that conviction that if someone is good he must be boring. One has nothing to do with the other. That belief that if a character isn't a cruel bitch he's not a realistic, "real" human is just wow. Like sure, in real life there's an abundance of cruel monsters but it doesn't make them interesting. Don't get me wrong, I love watching horrors and thrillers with evil characters in them, but just because the character is a narcisistic arsehole who tortures people physically or mentally (or both) doesn't make him a compelling character. It just doesn't.
Also, people who complain that they can predict how the romance book ends, that they know the main characters are going to end up together right away -_-. Congratulations. Do you also complain that in a murder mystery they solve the mystery at the and and there's also a murder? Just say you don't like happy endings and read love stories and psychological dramas. Like, I totally get it, sometimes you want to be surprised with the ending but romance is that genre that kinda focuses on the journey. You know the destination but still want to find out how you get there. Predictability might be quite tiresome but what's the difference between me rolling my eyes watching a character checking a weird noise in the basement in a horror movie and me rolling my eyes reading the third act brake-up scene in a romance book? It's just how it is. The writer can still make it interesting.
