Project #4 performance art
Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present
This film explores the performance artist Marina Abramovic. The daughter to yugoslavian war heros she blends spirituality with communist discipline. The film chronicles marina's early career as well as her marriage up to her the artist is present performance at the moma.
Her performances give the audience the experience to share the moment with the artist. Her art reveals human nature, she is challenging the audience by asking them to share the art with her. Mariana blends physical strength with stamina in art that relies entirely on herself. Her three month The Artist is Present experiment proves just how devoted she is to her art.
ROSELEE GOLDBERG Performance: A Hidden History
“History shows that artists have used performance not merely as a means to attract publicity for their seemingly wild and bohemian life-styles but also as a way of animating the many formal and conceptual ideas on which the making of art is based”
The authors talks about how performance art is not a new media. She gives the examples of of popular art movements such as dadaism and surrealism. She than explains that performance has always been on the fringes of all artistic mediums. I found the author's explanation of performance art helpful. She claims it is sometimes seen as a publicity stunt, form of protest or reaffirms ideas of art in its time. Performance art has always attracted artists on the fringe. Since the definition of performance arts is very loose it allows for a large amount of manipulation and exploration unlike some forms of art. The contradiction of the medium was interesting to me. Performance art is created for the public to see, yet is created by artists on the margins of society. It can be both serious and playful, often using satire.

Project #3 Vanishing and Becoming
Projection: Vanishing and becoming Sean Cubitt
I found the three types of projection origin particularly interesting. I agree that as a metaphor projection has a powerful place in the way we construct our conception of reality. Cubitts inclusion of past historical figures like moses and plato made his ideas more accessible to the reader and stronger at the same time. The author then continues to build the history of projection up until the current mediums (film/digital) I found some of the reading thick but overall it has changed the way i see video art and video as a whole.
Project 3 - Exercise 3
We process thousands of still images everyday. People no longer take time to acknowledge and appreciate images. This series hopes to explore the relationship between nature, technology and self.
