“I wish that it had too.” Noah said carefully, “So, ah, do they know how long you’ll be here for?” he questioned before shrugging with his good shoulder, “Yeah, it’s just a few weeks for me … and it’s summer, hopefully it won’t even mess up my sports much. Alessandra burned her arm pretty bad though.”

“Probably not super long, but I am going to have to come back for regular visits for a while.” Mason replied, just wanting to be home in his own bed. “It sucks that so many people get hurt. Although, it  seems like most people are going to be alright soon.”

Sydney shrugged. “Yeah I guess.” She smiled towards him. “I am just glad that you found the time to see me now.” She smiled. “Europe?” she asked him a bit shocked. “Wait, why? For how long?” She asked him, curious as to why he was going. “Um.. Nothing much. I have been writing some songs again and stuff. Looking for a job over summer.”

“Well, I’m a lot less busy at the moment. If I do go to Europe, I’ll be going for school so I’d be there for a couple of years.” Mason replied, shrugging at the woman once more. Nothing was final yet, but he loved the idea of expanding his music knowledge. “You’re writing again? That’s great.”

Noah nodded, “I’m really glad you got her out, but I hate that you got hurt so bad. I was trying to make sure everyone got out too but … Alessandra wasn’t gonna leave the tent unless I did too by the end of things. And we’d both already gotten hurt a little anyway.” he said, inclining his head towards the sling. “I definitely got lucky that it was just my shoulder.”

“Yeah, I am glad that I did it, but I just wish that things had turned out better.” Mason replied, letting out a weak sigh. He still felt weak and dizzy. “Hopefully you’ll be healed and back to normal soon. Is Alessandra okay as well?”

Noah stepped inside, frowning as he saw Mason on the bed, he didn’t look very good - or sound very good. “Hey, I ah, I heard you were here … never really got the whole story on what happened.” he said carefully, “You alright?” he asked before mentally kicking himself, because of course he wasn’t, but he also couldn’t think of a more polite way to ask how badly Mason had been hurt.

“I heard a woman crying shortly after I got out of the tent.” Mason replied, knowing that he had been acting pretty stupid. “I knew it wasn’t safe to go back in, but I couldn’t just leave her in there. So when I went back to get her, I got burnt pretty bad. She got out safe though, once I got her unstuck.” He added, letting out a small sigh. “It wasn’t my smartest move.”

Noah aggressively disliked hospitals. They asked way too many questions there - about long-healed scars and too-visible ribs - and he had already had to deal with too much of that when he ended up in the ER himself after the carnival. However,  he knew that someone else he had met in the tent was still there, hurt much worse then he had been, and Noah knew that he had to check on him. He made his way through the hospital once being given the man’s room number and bit his lip nervously for a moment once he found the door, hoping he wouldn’t be bothering him. Finally he took in a breath and knocked gently, “Hey, ah, it’s Noah? Are you up for visitors?” he asked.

Mason was laying in bed, trying to focus on anything other than the pain that was growing across his body. His pain meds were wearing out, but it wasn’t time for his next ones. Mason heard a soft knock, and turned towards the door. “Yeah, sure. Come on in.” Mason replied, his voice still sounding raw from the smoke and such.

Mason could hear the beeps of the machines around him, and smell the familiar smell of the hospital. Everything else was a little bit fuzzy, but the doctors had told him there had been a fire at the carnival, and that he’d gotten injured trying to save other people. Looking around the room, Mason noticed Sydney and sent a faint smile in her direction. “Hey” He said, his voice sounding raspy and weak. “How are you?’

Noah gave a small sigh of relief when several people nearby seemed to pay attention and start heading for the opening and he picked up his pace to join them, “I think we’re gonna make it!” he called back to Mason, coughing slightly as he wiped at the soot and sweat on his face, the opening wasn’t far at all now.

As they finally reached the opening, Mason couldn’t help but smile. He was glad that they were reaching safety and had been able to help people on the way. Mason let out a small cough, wanting more than anything to just get some fresh air into his lungs. “Thank God.”

Burning // Self-para

Mason could feel his lungs filling with smoke as he re-entered the tent. He had heard the sounds of someone crying through the thin walls, and knew that there was someone who needed his help. As he looked around the now completely burning tent, he noticed the young woman caught between a fallen pole and a burning piece of table. Grabbing a long pole, he moved into action, pushing his way towards the woman.

Mason knew that he was being stupid, but he just couldn’t leave the woman there. As he got closer, the fire intensified. He could feel it drying out his skin and beginning to singe his clothes, but he felt moving forward. When he reached the woman, he began to try to move the pole out of the way, using he pole in his hand to protect himself. After a few moments the pole moved and the woman was able to squeeze through the gap that Mason had created. “Go.”

As Mason turned around to follow the woman, he got too close to the table, and watched in horror as his sleeve went up in flames. Fighting through the pain, Mason continued his way towards the exit. He felt as though his entire body was on fire. Everything smelled like it was burning, and his vision was beginning to blur. Mason let out a series of coughs as he got towards the exit. The next thing Mason knew, everything was going black.

Noah nodded at the man as they fought their was through the crowd, “We’re really not that far, if we can just get to it.” he said after a moment. “Look, right there, you can get out, right there!” he yelled to the people in front of him, pointing at the opening he had spotted as the moved. The heat and the smoke were becoming a little overwhelming.

Mason could feel the hot flames growing around them, and he just hoped that they could get people out in time. “Come on people, we can all get out of here safely.” Mason yelled, gesturing towards the openings nearby. He let out a small cough, hoping people would start to hurry.

Noah nodded, “Yeah, yeah, definitely.” he agreed, “Alright so we just … head for it and grab people on the way?” he asked as he began trying to make his way towards the opening he spotted, something which was a lot more difficult then it sounded between the crowds, the smoke, and the debris. “This is what I get for trying to be social. I swear I’m sticking to coffee shops and libraries after this.” he muttered.

“That seems like the best plan of action.” Mason replied, nodding at the man. It wasn’t going to be easy, but he believed that they could get everyone out of the tent before it was too late. Now it was just a matter of doing it in the safest way possible. “My thoughts exactly. I should just never leave my apartment.”

“Do you think they’ll get out?” Noah asked looking at the others still in the burning tent, “I don’t, I don’t want to just leave people…” he said, unable to think of people getting killed when he could have helped somehow. He might be hurt already, but that didn’t matter. He could take it, especially if it meant helping other people out.

“I think we need to gather as many people as we can on the way.” Mason replied, nodding at the man. Surely people were in flight mode, and would do whatever they could to get out. “We’ll try to get everyone out.”

She could see smoke rolling in, flames going higher and higher. This is not how she planned on croaking, not like this. Panic set in as she watched her leg.. one that felt like it was broken not respond to her many attempts to free itself. “Fucking hell,” she groaned loudly, looking around her until she saw Mason run towards her. As he explained everything to her, she nodded frantically. “Oh yeah, with smoke in my lungs, I’m going to remain calm,” she spat at him. Of course what could be her last words would be sarcastic. “Just please… help.”

“I’m trying to help.” Mason replied, letting out a sigh. He was almost hoping that the situation would make the normally sarcastic girl a little kinder, but that didn’t seem to be the case. Either way, he wasn’t just going to leave her here to die, so he began to push and pull on the beam, trying to loose it enough to lift. “Okay, I am going to lift the beam up, and I need you to use your arms to crawl backwards so you aren’t under it anymore. Do you think you can do that?”

Noah’s eyes widened as the fire expanded rapidly and people began screaming, running as they searched for a safe exit. This, this was why Noah preferred his home and the library. This kind of thing never happened at the library. Still though, right now there were a lot of people in danger, and he needed to kick his butt into gear. He had to get these people out. he pushed his way through the crowd as best as he could, looking desperately for an open spot to get out even as he himself was roughly shoved by the panicked crowd. Something fell, he couldn’t even see what, but he hissed in pain as it hit his shoulder. There wasn’t even time to address the injury in the chaos before he thought he spotted an opening - unfortunately, it wasn’t very close by. “Hey! Hey!” he called, “Look, I think if we can get over there, we can out!” said, trying to get the attention of people nearby.

Mason was scanning the room and watching as people panicked. He knew that he had to get out, but he wasn’t actually sure where to go from here. Running seemed easy, but he needed to figure out where to run to. The exit was packed and he didn’t think he’d get out of there anytime soon. When Mason heard a voice, he turned his attention towards Noah. “Okay, let’s go.” Mason replied, knowing they needed a clear plan. “If we head straight that way and avoid the fire, we should be okay.”

It was her fault that she came to this stupid event –– she should have known that she was going to find herself in a less than appealing situation. As soon as the fire started, everyone scattered in a panic. It was like they were roaches being hit with a flashlight. But Emmy herself couldn’t outrun the stampede of frantic civilians. As people pushed her down and got the hell out of dodge, she felt a blinding pain coming from her leg. She did her best to keep her head down as people kept running over her, people hitting her torso, stepping on her knee, not caring that she was stranded on the dirt floor. As the fire spread, the structure of the tent started to collapse, suddenly a heave steal beam came falling down, trapping her legs underneath it. A heavy scream left her lips, the pain trapping her right where she sat but with fog clouding the tent, she knew she had to do something and it was evident that no one was going to help –– no matter the pleas. Emmy did her best to push the beam off her leg, ignoring the aching pain that rushed through her body, just waiting on someone to help her.

As people were running around and panicking, Mason tried to remain calm. Sure he wanted to get out of the burning tent, but he wasn’t about to push his way through and hurt people in the process. As he watched people filling out of the building he heard a loud scream. Mason realized that someone was in trouble, and looked around for a few seconds before finding the woman lying on the ground in pain. The flames were growing hotter now, but Mason knew that he couldn’t just leave her there. “Okay, hold on.” Mason replied, trying to find the best way to lift the heavy beam off of her leg. “I am going to try to pull the beam off of you, but I need you to remain calm.”

Brendon was relieved that Mason was so nice about catching him dancing embarrassingly to Rihanna, he was starting to lower his shoulder, relaxing slowly. He didn’t have to be tense around Mason, he was good. “I know what you mean, I’ve been really stressed I haven’t had time for fun….I guess that’s why I just danced like that, I think I needed to relax and have some fun for once” he looked over at him, “What have you been up to?”

“Yeah, it’s healthy to let off some steam every once in a while. I’ve always felt that the best way to do that is to just act silly and have fun.” Mason replied, surely not judging the boy. Whatever helped relax him was a perfectly fine choice. “I’ve been writing a lot of music mostly, and teaching a lot of lessons.”

“I-…I’m really sorry you had to see that” he said, rubbing the back of his neck, letting out a nervous laugh. “No- that’s okay, I don’t have to keep going, I’m fine finishing there”

“Don’t worry about it, it was a nice change from my usual routine.” Mason replied, sending him a small chuckle. “You were clearly having more fun than I have had lately.”
