{sighs} God-fucking-dammit… okay… can’t believe I’m doing this. You gotta give me at least 20 minutes.

Yes! {he smiled, surprised that Jax would actually put on a costume for him} What are you going to be?

Sure {he nodded} So, do I have to throw on a costume or can I go as myself?

Of course you have to throw on a costume! It’s Halloween, you have to!

No… it’s not like it has anything to do with me. 

{smiling softly, Brendon nodded} Thanks. I appreciate that more than you know

“Really? So like, no Spiderman, Batman or even Venom?” Evan asked him. “How come?” He added. “Um.. Sorry, you don´t have to elaborate unless you want to.” He was quick to add. “Thanks dude. Appreaciated. Now, where do you recommend we start?”

“Nope, nothing” he shrugged, “My parents didn’t let me do anything for halloween. They thought it was a really satanic holiday, so they didn’t want me having any part of it. My first halloween was when I was 15 when I moved to New York” he nodded, “Oh don’t worry, it’s not too personal or anything, I don’t mind talking about it” he smiled softly. “I think there’s a costume store a block or two from here”

Cut the shit, alright. Just wear the damn thing and don’t give a rat’s ass about what others think.

You’re not going to tell anyone about-...you know....right?

You look awesome, but you act awkward. If you’re lucky, a dude might fall for that {shrugs} 

A dud-.. {Brendon paused} No- no I’m not...

Connor nodded, “Good, good. Just … I worry.” he said carefully, “I know it seems ridiculous to you. It seemed ridiculous when I was seventeen and getting really similar talks from Chloe.” he said, wanting Brendon to know that he did understand, and he did remember being seventeen. “But this little family we’ve got here … it’s not exactly conventional, but I’ve never exactly done things the conventional way. You’re my kid, and I just want you to be safe.”

“I know you worry, I get it, but I’m going to be completely fine” he nodded. “I’m not going to let anything bad happen to me, I’ve dealt with enough things in my time in New York, I don’t need to add to that” he commented, which was true. Honestly, Brendon had never figured out how to deal with the things he had been through and the things that he had seen, so he didn’t want to make his already big problems worse by adding to them.

“I mean, I think that’s kind of half the point of dressing up.” he said with a small shrug, “I should probably take my own advice more often though. I don’t really … like attention, but maybe I should just wear something with a mask myself?” he said, considering the idea.

“You should try something with a mask, maybe that’ll be better for you too!” he smiled over at Liam. “If you don’t tell anyone what you’re being than you can just disappear and no one will know”

“Spiderman. I have not dressed up like him since I was like 8.” He told him with a light smile. “I dig it though. I actually quite like the character.” He added. Thinking about it for a second. “I mean, I was pretty set on that costume and I am pretty out of ideas. So sure, if you have time?”

“I never got to really dress up as anything I wanted as a kid, so now I get to dress up as the fun superheroes that people dressed up as when they were young and I couldn’t” he smiled, “Of course, I’d love to help!”

She took a second to think about what he just asked her, not putting a single emotion on her face. “No and no. I just don’t know you,” she shrugged. “Why do you care?”

“It just really seems like you hate me...” he frowned, very much so not used to people giving him the cold shoulder when all he’d tried to do was get along with them. “I don’t know, I’m just trying...and it kind of feels like you dont even give me a chance to get along with you, I guess...is what I’m trying to say”

“Do you-..” he paused, not sure he’d like the answer to his own question. “Do you not like me?” he asked, shrugging, “I- I mean like, did I do something to make you not like me?”

Why wouldn’t you want to stand out? It’s halloween. 

I would prefer to just blend in, I don’t like standing out. It makes me uncomfortable

“I mean, I’m not a big fan of superheroes so I’m really not the person you should be asking. Connor will be home in about an hour. Otherwise you wanna go ask the baby, I heard she’s seen all of the avengers movie, I think she’s writing the next one too.” 

Taking off the mask of the costume, Brendon looked over at Evie. “Can I ask you something?”

Connor frowned at Brendon’s words. “But you can’t know that for sure.” he managed to say after a moment. Clearly his original Talk™ hadn’t quite gotten through, “Things … really bad things, they do happen. To guys too. I know people it did happen to, I … well, you know what I’m studying? You know that I see patients under supervision that I can’t talk about?” he added, hoping Brendon got the words he couldn’t exactly say there. “That’s why I want you to be careful. Don’t be alone, know who you’re around, don’t take drinks you didn’t see poured, don’t drink anything you’ve been away from.” he listed, hoping that Brendon really would listen. He couldn’t stand the thought of something happening to him.

Brendon stayed quiet as Connor talked again, the talk hitting harder than it had when he’d heard it drunk. The severity of Connors words hadn’t hit as hard as Connor had intended, but it definitely worked better than last time he tried to talk to Brendon about it. “I’m going to be careful, Connor... I promise” he said, but he was sure no words of his could have eased Connor’s mind. The only way Connor wouldn’t worry would be if Brendon showed up at the party with a giant garbage bag as a costume an a paper bag on his head.

“spiderman it is,” she states with an agreeing nod. taking a step towards him, ophelia continues: “so, do you only unmask yourself to specific people, or do i get the honor as well?” it was all a game, but boy, was it fun. 

“Really the identity of spiderman is supposed to be a secret, but I can take off the mask” he shrugged, “Its kind of hot under here anyway”

“Yeah, exactly!” Liam said with a grin, “Just … be somebody else for the night. Isn’t that kind of the point anyway?” he suggested. Maybe he should take his own advice, wear something with a mask and quit being so self-conscious for once. He wondered if that would even work for him.

“Just be someone else for the night....Yeah, that sounds.. that sounds really nice” he said with a small smile. That was something Brendon had tried in the past, to be like someone other than himself, and it didn’t turn out too well for him. But this time- no one would know it was him, maybe then he could feel comfortable enough to let go for once and have fun.
