This video is great 3 minutes of why we need Common Core in the United States.
Whether we as future educators or as parents to our own children like or dislike Common Core we have to stand behind it, especially as a parent. As of now there is nothing we can do to just make it vanish. So, we need to stand behind our children and help them. After all the parents are the ones who make the biggest impact in children.
This is a blog of a lady who has taken time to setup strategies and examples to teach parents how to teach their children.
Are Common Core Standards Really That Bad?
I have a lot of dislike towards Common Core when it comes to the mathematical part. I am a math fanatic, numbers truly excite me. When I started studying for the Praxis Core, I flipped straight to the math part because I was excited to see what problems I could remember how to do. Little did I know, I could not even get past the first problem. So, I think positively and go to the second problem. Nope I run into the same exact thing. For this reason alone I closed the book and have not opened since. I already hate tests (I am one that thinks test define who I am), and truly feel like this test should NOT define whether I can pursue my dream of being a teacher.
Common Core in the other subjects such as literature, science, and history is a great thing for the most part. Children need to elaborate more and look into things more deeply. I have never been diagnosed with a reading problem, but I suffered growing up and still do today from comprehension. I can sometimes read a whole book, but not gather anything from it. There are tons of kids out there that are just like this. For those children I believe that the standards of Common Core are actually pretty great. I do believe in the grand scheme of things children will benefit in college and life with the English Language Arts/Literacy Standards.
JACKSON, Miss. — Instead, a panel will make recommendations to the state Board of Education.
The comment of let the educators work on this, they are the experts literally makes me laugh out loud. If the government officials would have listened to them in the first place there would be none of this.
Mississippi cut ties with a major Common Core testing provider on Friday, chipping away at the state’s original plans for testing students on the controversial math and English standards.
I believe this will be the best thing for MS. I do like the critical thinking that is required under these standards in the English curriculum, but is it really neccessary for all the tests to go along with it?
This really explains it all.
Not you, not your students.
Exactly and so many students fall into this hole. Many believe that their grade on tests determine who they are.
Angry Mother Destroys Common Core by Writing This on Her Son’s Test
This absolutely right. Math is not the easiest subject for everyone and some are very very good at it. Why complicate simple math? As long as the student gets the answer right why does it matter HOW they got it.
I’ll stick with the old way….
Now, whenever I look at this, it’s like I’m reading this:
"If you have 4 pencils and 7 apples, how many pancakes will fit on the roof? Purple. Because aliens don’t wear hats."
I do not understand the point in this. I DO NOT get it. Why change something so simple to a very complex problem. POOR CHILDREN!! Common Core was NEVER meant for mathematics.
Arkansas Mother Obliterates Common Core in 4 Minutes! This is a great speech by a concerned mother, and she is completely right. The people that are making these laws could not sit in a classroom and get these problems right.
Is Common Core the Answer?
Here in the state of Mississippi, the government has taken on to this new fad of Common Core basically replacing No Child Left Behind and also working to open the minds of students and make their brains work more. I totally agree that there should be some sort of help in making the students think more and elaborate. I had and still have a huge problem elaborating on things. I often say, "It is right because it is right. I do not know why 2+2=4."
I also know that it comes down to more than just that. I use that example so much because I have a love for math, but sitting in a fourth grade math class last year I wanted to completely pull my eyeballs out. This actually even made me question wanting to become a teacher especially math.
So, I think Common Core does have the right path of making the students think, but the tests that go along with it, in my opinion, are completely crazy. When everything gets turned upside down in a classroom as far as the new way teachers teach material the last thing an educator wants to see is a test that they are teaching to.

Amen!! I absolutely HATE tests!!
Good Evening. My name is Madison Kirk Roberts. I am from Lake Cormorant, MS. I graduated from Lake Cormorant High School in May of 2011. I then went straight to Northwest MS CC and started on following my dreams. I went there for a few semesters and then transferred to Mississippi State (HAILSTATE!!!) in the spring of 2013. That is when my I found out my now husband and high school sweet heart, Jeremy, and I were expecting the best SURPRISE ever, Elijah Dane William Roberts. In December of 2013 I gave birth to the most beautiful 7 lbs 14 oz 21 inch long baby boy. I have never gave up on my dream of becoming a teacher and never missed a beat of school.
God, Family, and School are my number one priorities. I am on track to graduate in December of 2015 with a Bachelors in General Studies and then I plan to go on to complete an alternate route to teach high school history or math. I am very passionate about this decision and it is something I have dreamed of since I was a little girl. Although, my education is a must in my life I am first a wife, mother, and employee. I drive a school bus for DeSoto County Schools and absolutely love it.
In this blog I will be talking about the pros, the cons, and my personal opinions on Common Core State Standards.
