Some reading this on the surface might scoff and denigrate any positive consideration to such a proposal as lazy or trying to get away with something. But this has got to be, in my opinion, one of the most progressive and important experiments of the last 20 years. It's focus is on our future. Our seemingly inevitable future. What do we do when money cannot be earned in the current definition of this concept?
What does the future look like if we cannot perform for a livable wage?
Theologically speaking, the work that God did in the creation account in the Bible seems to have also been, in addition to other purposes, a mimetic device to compliment the creation (humans) to the creator (God). This can be seen in the laws given to the people and the connection of the idea of a return to a connection to the divine. God tells people to take a sabbath because God rested on the seventh day. We have so much generally established theology and ecclesiology and pneumatology and eschatology that are in many ways predicated on a God that rests. Many morality clauses in church culture throughout the ages have sprung forth from supporting arguments of a live-to-work-and-work-to-do-your-calling-and-rest-cycle. Modern church culture loves these concepts because they can do seminars and conferences and build multi-million dollar empires on these ties to Bible concepts of rest and those things leading up to and resulting from a proper rest.
What if resting doesnt matter anymore?
What if resting is the new life of the future with automated wages?
What if work is actually non-existent or perhaps given to those for criminal punishment?
Being paid for the rest of your life for doing nothing can seem subtle but it eventually brings up some theological questions that the church needs to prepare to answer.
Will not worrying about money and finding work be the eternal life?
Will that make us all lazy and not want to do anything? Would it free us to live great and uplifting lives? Would it free people from living despicable immoral lives? Is money the cause of bad things in life like poverty, crime, violence?
Feel free to answer or add on anything.
