I think I would have been ok with the whole theme of power and greed (and as a result alina losing her powers) if the grisha were not being persecuted. Because then it just leaves a bad taste and I couldnt figure out why until that post you reblogged.
Yeah that's the problem with a lot of fantasy persecution narratives. Instead of dealing with real world prejudice, they instead make the persecuted group some sort of magic users or fantasy race. But then--and here's the big problem--they justify that prejudice and say 'well, it's reasonable if you look at it from the other side'.
For instance, when Leigh claimed that the persecution of Grisha was different because 'they're all soldiers fighting back and not innocent civilians'. Like, put aside the fact that they were persecuted before they became soldiers and that's WHY they all had to join the second army. Put aside that non Ravkan Grisha are decidedly not soldiers. It's kinda gross that she said that because she is justifying the persecution.
And like. No. Real world prejudice and persecution often does not HAVE a reason. People will make up reasons to justify themselves but it is based primarily in completely irrational fear. When authors try to rationalize the prejudice. To get inside the heads of the other party and try to 'both sides' it, they fundamentally fail at what they set out to do.
Like, you can do magic/power corrupts narratives in fiction. Plenty of properties have done it and done it very well. But those narratives primarily work when the magic users are the ones who are in control of the society/have power. Not the ones who are persecuted.
The original trilogy, intentionally or not, gives the message that there is reason to fear the Grisha and that therefore, hunting them down or treating them poorly is understandable. And I don't think Leigh meant to do it. But it's there nonetheless.

How had she bested him? Sheer stubbornness. That pragmatic impulse that had allowed her to survive the orphanage, to endure so many years without using her powers. Something more. He’d known the name for it once, a hundred lifetimes ago.
