(WJHL) — A Navy seaman from Cumberland Gap who died in the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and was accounted for last year will be buried next week in Maryland. According to the Navy, Seaman 1st Class William Brooks was stationed on the USS Oklahoma (BB-37), which was one of the first vessels hit during the attack. The ship was struck by several torpedos and had rolled over within minutes, trapping hundreds of sailors below deck. Brooks was among the 429 sailors who lost their lives. #WelcomeHomeWednesday Sailors assigned to U.S. Navy Region Hawaii participate in an internment ceremony for U.S. Navy Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Everett Raymond Stewart, of California, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, June 16, 2022. Stewart was assigned to the USS Oklahoma, which sustained fire from Japanese aircraft and multiple torpedo hits causing the ship to capsize and resulted in the deaths of more than 400 crew members on Dec. 7, 1941, at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. Stewart was recently identified through DNA analysis by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) forensic laboratory and laid to rest with full military honors. It's me again, Tiger, with my friend, Rat, and this is our annual online check-in for 2022. We are looking out towards the northeast, facing another spring in Calgary. These words - northeast, spring, Calgary - were taught to us by our Mom. We use them online to make our mom happy, but Rat and me, well, such high-faluttin terms don't really have a purpose. We are sinply "couraging up" to face the start of another bird-bug-squirrel season, and normally, Rat and I would be pumped... but this year, we are wary. The world is full of scary stuff. Rat and I catch glimpses of it on our mom's talking box that's called CNN, when she isn't looking. We're not sure we want to go "out there." We sit here in our cozy hammock, facing the window, contemplating the risk versus reward ratio. Rat taught me that equation. He may look cute 'n' squishy but he's no mental slouch. Why just this week, the neighbours took all their stuff out of their garage for a clean-up. Who does that? The vista that Rat and I count on to be exactly the same, day-in and day-out, exploded before our very eyes, and every movement, every errant noise has us running for the door in terror. How can you safely navigate a world that refuses to stay the same? Rat and I live for sameness. Our heads hurt now, doing all this thinking. It's time for a nap. For now, the bird-bug-squirrel season will have to wait. Rat will let me know when it's safe again to explore. For now, he and I will dream of sniffing and nibbling.
