Viral Interventions: Final Documentation
Dimensions: ~15 ft x 40 ft
Materials: plush bear, tree, index cards, metal bats, black markers, glue, acrylic paint, sponge brushes, mod podge, rope
For our final project, we hung a large damaged plush bear on a tree in Tamiami Park. Negative notes occupy the space where its heart used to be, and they fly out as the plush is hit with bats. The film is done vertically to parallel how the first instincts of people witnessing something tragic is to pull out their phones and hit record.
We wanted to give the plush its own story to make our audience attached. Mr. Bear is an aspiring artist who posts his art on the internet but is met with waves upon waves of negativity. As the hate comments increase, he gets overwhelmed to the point where he decides to end it all. Even as he hangs, he is beaten which shows how the world will never be kind even after a life has been lost. We uploaded his story on YouTube and pasted the videoâs QR code around our local areas to gain more traction.
We got minimal reaction from passersby as we hit the hanging plush. Any witnesses stopped to stare for a couple moments and then walked away. No one stopped to ask what we were doing. We expected this kind of reaction as we wanted to communicate how no one seems to care about those who suffer. Everyone in this modern age is occupied on their own problems instead of opening their hearts to help others.
