Marina Abramovic Response

Marina Abramovic really pushed the boundaries of performance art when she did her The Artist is Present piece. It was so intriquing to see all the different people that came to see her art and sit in front of her. Usually people do not camp overnight to see art, so the fact that people did that in order to see her is awesome. She took something that people would normally not consider art, and changed how people look at performance art. Without her doing this, some people may never know what performance art is; she changed the way people view art.

Performance Art Reading Response

I have always thought of live performances as art - plays, musicals, dances, music shows, and it is interesting to read that some people may not consider these things as art. In a sense it does not fall into “traditional art”, so perhaps that is why some people do not see it as art. The fact that live art can be so many different things is really appealing to me. Like Goldberg says in her article, “Performance is the expression of artists who wish to challenge the viewers' perceptions of art and the limits of those perceptions.” Live art has the possibility to be so many different things, and that is why it is so special. An artist has no limits with live art; they can push the boundaries and create something different.

Project #3:

I took this video while I was driving to babysit at 4:45 in the morning. It honestly is very relaxing to me to watch all the cars drive by and have the music in the background. Without the music, I do not think it is as beautiful with just the video. Together the music and the video create a peaceful aesthetic that is very calming.

Chapter 6 Reading Response

How does one show time without having their viewers physically walking through their art? I think that is something that comes with time and with experience for an artist. I think a good tool for showing time in art would be through lighting and composition of an art piece. Implied motion is also a good technique in order to show that time is moving.

Projection: Vanishing and Becoming Reading Response

It is very interesting to think about the first artworks and artists. I had never really thought of that before, and thought more that art has always been around. But there is a first time for everything, so it is interesting to read about how historians think art began. I do understand what the author is saying when he says that all art is a projection. It is a projection from what we see onto whatever medium we are using. This article made me think about how one began art and how we reached the mediums that we have today.

Artist Statement: exercise 2

For my gifs, I used videos of my everyday life. It was fun using my own videos and creating them into gifs. There were a lot of different ideas I had of what I should record, but I chose videos that showed different things that my boyfriend and I did over the 4th of July weekend holiday. These videos show how we personally like to spend our free time.

Project 2 Artist Statement

For this GIF series, I wanted to highlight what I like to call “New Americana”. I work for Wood Stickers in Denver Colorado and operate a UV flatbed printer on a part time basis. I firmly believe the emphasis on small businesses here in Denver has caused a resurgence in jobs like this, a new “factory” job. Each machine in the warehouse bares its intricacies, and it is up to the person, the machinist, to give these items a purpose and propel the business and the worker forward. The GIFs were originally videos taken during a typical work day.
