My first attempt at kid lit from when I was a kid myself

Mousie stared with disbelief at his little son. Then after a minute or so he looked up at Dusty who was lovingly admiring their new baby. She didn’t care what color he was. It was just as marvelous to her that she had accomplished such a feat as bringing life into the world, even if she was limited to one at a time. Brother Mike finally said, “What was his name again?”

“Why, he’s Love!”

“I bet he is a love child.”

“What! What do you mean?”

“He’s white, Dusty. WHITE. I know good and well that there are no white mice or rats in my whole family. And as for your family, Dusty…well, I just hint that there’s no way that this baby can be my son. Absolutely no way. I don’t know when it happened, but you could have told me sooner but now I guess it’s too late, isn’t it.”

Dusty was hurt and thoroughly confused.  “What are you about. What if he is white? He’s your son. He’s OUR son!”

“Oh Dusty, why couldn’t you tell me the truth?”

“Mousie, you’re not listening . I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you or me!”

“I’m afraid I can’t stay here any longer. His real father can come back to you.”

Poor Dusty was in tears. Why didn’t Mousie believe her? She begged and pleaded with him.

“You don’t love us!”

“I do love you, Dusty. But, I can’t love your son. I had my hopes up so high.”
